Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Recording naira petty cash in Canadian books

How to run a naira petty cash float for Nigerian staff, what each receipt must show for the CRA, and how to convert small naira spends into CAD.

The short answer

Run naira petty cash as a fixed float: staff spend from it, attach a receipt or signed voucher for each item, and the float is topped up by exactly the amount spent after a manager approves the log. In your Canadian books, record each top-up as expenses by category, converted to CAD at a rate source the CRA accepts; the Bank of Canada does not publish a naira rate. Keep the receipts for six years, with the records accessible in Canada.

Why petty cash needs a system

A Nigerian team spends small amounts every week: fuel for the generator, a courier, printing, a tip at the port, airtime for a work phone. Individually they are small. Added up across a year they are real expenses that your Canadian company wants to deduct, and real money that can leak if no one checks. The CRA's guide on business records asks for a receipt or voucher for each purchase and says expenses you cannot support may be disallowed.

Set it up as an imprest float

The imprest method keeps petty cash simple: the float is a fixed amount, and at any moment cash in hand plus receipts equals the float.

  1. Set the float (for example ₦200,000) and name one custodian in Nigeria.
  2. Write a short policy: what petty cash can be used for, the most a single spend can be, and who approves top-ups.
  3. Every spend gets a receipt; where the seller cannot give one, the spender fills a voucher with date, payee, item and amount, and signs it.
  4. At the end of each week or month, the custodian sends the log and scanned receipts; a manager in Canada reviews and approves.
  5. Top up by exactly the amount spent, so the float returns to the fixed figure.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example: a ₦200,000 float. During the month the custodian spends ₦38,500 on diesel, ₦62,000 on a courier to a client in Abuja and ₦15,000 on printing. Total spent: ₦38,500 + ₦62,000 + ₦15,000 = ₦115,500. Cash in hand should be ₦200,000 − ₦115,500 = ₦84,500. If the count is ₦84,000, record the ₦500 difference as a shortage and ask why. The top-up is ₦115,500.

What each receipt should show

The CRA's T4002 guide (Rev. 25) lists what a receipt should show:

  • the date of purchase
  • the seller's name and address
  • the buyer's name and address
  • a full description of the goods or services
  • the vendor's business number, where the vendor is a GST/HST registrant and the pre-tax price is $100 or more (this applies to Canadian vendors, not Nigerian ones)

Many Nigerian receipts are handwritten or have no description. The guide's answer for a till slip with no description is to write what the item was on the receipt or in your expense records. Do the same for Nigerian receipts, and translate any line that is not in English or French.

Converting naira into CAD

The CRA's Income Tax Folio S5-F4-C1 makes the Bank of Canada rate for the day the default. The Bank of Canada does not publish a naira rate, so you need another source that the folio accepts: widely available, verifiable, independent, market-recognised, and used consistently from year to year. The folio also says the CRA may accept an average rate for a period for practical reasons, but generally not where rates move significantly.

For petty cash, a sensible approach is to convert each top-up at the rate on the top-up date from one named source, and note the source in your accounting policy. Example: a ₦115,500 top-up at an illustrative 1 CAD = ₦1,100 is CAD 105.00 of expenses (₦115,500 ÷ 1,100), split across fuel, courier and printing in the proportions of the receipts. If you buy the naira first with Canadian dollars, the actual conversion cost can also anchor the figure; ask your accountant which policy to follow, and see keeping books in CAD, naira and USD.

Controls that keep the float honest

  • Separate duties: the custodian spends, someone else approves the top-up.
  • Surprise counts: a video call once a quarter where the custodian counts the cash on camera.
  • A per-spend limit: anything above it goes through the normal supplier payment route with an invoice.
  • No personal loans from the float, ever, however small.
  • A yearly review of the float size: if it is topped up every week, it is too small; if it barely moves, reduce it.

Keeping the records

The CRA says records must generally be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, at your place of business or residence in Canada unless it gives written permission otherwise. Scanned receipts held only on a server in Lagos are not the same as records kept in Canada, so keep the scans in your Canadian accounting system. For supplier invoices rather than petty cash, see CRA receipts for Nigerian supplier costs; our Nigeria site has a petty cash log template.

Where Pryme fits

Many teams replace most petty cash with small transfers from a naira account, which leaves a record of every spend. In a Pryme Business Account, each transfer has a receipt, and any customer can generate a verifiable receipt or statement with VerifyDoc.ai (receipts) that a reviewer can check is unaltered. The Finance agent can match receipts to the log; top-ups wait for a person's approval.

Questions people ask

How do I record petty cash spent in Nigeria for a Canadian company?

Record each top-up as expenses by category, supported by receipts or signed vouchers, converted to CAD at a rate source the CRA accepts, used consistently.

What exchange rate should I use for naira petty cash?

The Bank of Canada has no naira rate, so use an independent, verifiable, market-recognised source consistently, as Folio S5-F4-C1 describes.

Do Nigerian receipts count for CRA purposes?

Yes, if they support the expense. Write a description on receipts that lack one and translate anything not in English or French.

How long should I keep petty cash receipts?

Generally six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to, with the records kept or accessible in Canada.
