Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

Can I pay Spanish bills from my Nigerian bank account?

Why Spanish rent, utility and phone direct debits need an EU account, what Nigerian cards and transfers can and cannot pay, and the limits reported.

The short answer

Partly. Spanish utilities, phone contracts and many landlords collect by euro direct debit, which needs an account in the EU, so a Nigerian account cannot be set up for them. You can pay some one-off bills by Nigerian dollar card within its limits, or pay rent by SWIFT transfer from a domiciliary account, but both carry conversion and transfer costs.

In the first weeks in Spain, before a Spanish account is open, many people try to run their bills from home. Some of it works. The parts that do not work fail for a structural reason, not because of a bank’s policy, and it helps to know which is which.

Why direct debits need an EU account

Spanish bills are usually paid by domiciliación bancaria, a euro direct debit. The EU’s SEPA regulation (No 260/2012) covers euro direct debits where the payment providers are in the Union. Article 9 stops a company collecting by direct debit from refusing an account because of which EU member state it is in, so a French or Irish IBAN should be accepted. A Nigerian account is not an EU account, so it falls outside that rule and cannot be set up as a SEPA direct debit mandate at all.

What each bill needs

BillUsual payment methodCan a Nigerian account pay it?
Electricity, gas, waterDirect debitNot by direct debit; some suppliers take card payments online
Mobile and internet contractsDirect debitUsually not; prepaid mobile can be topped up by card
RentTransfer or direct debit, as the contract saysBy SWIFT transfer from a domiciliary account, if the landlord agrees
Community charges, local taxesDirect debit or bank paymentGenerally no
One-off purchases, deposits onlineCardYes, within your card’s international limits

Paying by Nigerian card

A dollar debit card linked to a domiciliary account is the most workable option. Fidelity Bank lists a 3% charge on dollar-card transactions in other currencies and a $5,000 limit; Wema’s dollar card help article gives daily limits of $1,000 at ATMs, $10,000 at POS and $5,000 online. Naira cards are harder: Fidelity says individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions, while Nairametrics reported in September 2026 that some banks allow international naira-card spending within caps, for example GTBank at $40,000 a quarter. Our guide to dollar card FX charges in Spain works through the cost.

Paying rent by transfer

A landlord who will accept a transfer gives you an IBAN. From a domiciliary account, TheCable’s summary of the CBN FX Manual 2026 says telegraphic transfers of up to US$10,000 per day are allowed. Each transfer is a SWIFT payment with fees at both ends, and it can take several working days, so send early and use the payment reference the landlord asks for. For a monthly rent, those fees add up quickly; see sending euros from a Nigerian bank.

What about the travel allowance?

TheCable’s summary also says the personal travel allowance is $4,000 per quarter for adults, with at least 75% to be used through cards or digital channels. It is meant for travel, not for running a household abroad, so it is not a basis for paying a year of Spanish bills.

A worked example

Example only; rates and fees are illustrative. Your rent is €900 a month. Paying it by SWIFT from a dollar domiciliary account at €1 = $1.10 costs $990, plus, say, a $25 sending fee and a €10 receiving charge borne by the landlord, which he may ask you to cover. Over twelve months the fees alone come to $300 plus €120 before any rate margin. A euro account in Spain removes most of that.

The practical answer

  1. Use a Nigerian dollar card for one-off costs while you settle in.
  2. Agree with the landlord how rent is paid until you have a euro account.
  3. Open a euro account as soon as you have a NIE and an address; see opening a Spanish account with a Nigerian passport.
  4. Move the direct debits to the euro account and fund it in larger, less frequent transfers.

Keep a record of every payment

While bills are paid from Nigeria, payments to a Spanish landlord or supplier arrive as international transfers or foreign card payments, which are harder for the other side to match to your account. Use the reference the landlord or supplier gives you on every transfer, save the SWIFT confirmation and the card receipt, and send a short email with the payment details the same day. If a payment is late because a SWIFT transfer took longer than expected, that email and confirmation are your evidence that you paid on time.

If family in Nigeria pays for you

Sometimes a relative in Nigeria pays a Spanish deposit or the first months of rent. The same limits apply to their account, and the Spanish recipient sees a payment from someone else. Ask the landlord to note who paid on your behalf, and keep a short letter from the relative confirming the payment, in case your Spanish bank later asks about the source of money for the tenancy.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds EUR alongside NGN, USD and GBP, with account details for each currency, opened from Spain. Whether a particular Spanish biller will accept it is for that biller to confirm. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Can I pay my Spanish electricity bill from a Nigerian account?

Not by direct debit, which needs an EU account. Some suppliers accept card payments online, which a Nigerian dollar card can make within its limits.

Can I pay rent in Spain from my domiciliary account?

Yes, by SWIFT transfer to the landlord’s IBAN if the landlord agrees, within the daily transfer limit and with fees at both ends.

Will a Spanish company accept a non-Spanish IBAN?

Under article 9 of the SEPA regulation, a company collecting by direct debit should not refuse an account because of which EU country it is in. A Nigerian account is outside the EU and not covered.

Can I use my naira card for Spanish bills?

Some banks bar international naira-card use; others allow it within caps. A dollar card is usually more workable.
