Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

Can I open a bank account in Spain with a Nigerian passport?

Yes, but the type of account depends on whether you are resident. What Spanish banks ask Nigerians for, why the NIE matters and the basic account option.

The short answer

Yes. A Nigerian passport is accepted ID at Spanish banks, but most will open a full resident account only once you have a NIE and, usually, your residence card and padrón registration; before that you can be offered a non-resident account. The EU payment accounts directive (2014/92/EU) also created a right of access to a basic payment account, which you can ask the bank for by name.

Getting a Spanish account early matters: salaries, rent, Bizum transfers and utility direct debits all run through it. The answer to "can I?" is yes; the useful question is which account, and what to bring so the branch says yes on the first visit.

Resident or non-resident account

Non-resident accountResident account
Who it is forPeople not (yet) resident in Spain, such as new arrivals or property buyers living abroadPeople living in Spain with residence status
ID usually asked forPassport; some banks also ask for a certificate showing non-resident statusPassport plus NIE, usually the TIE card
Typical usesPaying a deposit on a flat, receiving a first transferSalary, rent, direct debits, cards
Next stepSwitch to resident once you have residence: switching your account

Banks apply anti-money laundering rules, so every bank will check who you are, where you live, what you do and where your money comes from. Policies vary by bank and even by branch, so if one says no, ask why in writing and try another.

What Spanish banks usually ask Nigerians for

  1. Your valid Nigerian passport. Expired passports are refused; see expired passports and bank checks.
  2. Your NIE, as a certificate or on your TIE.
  3. Proof of address in Spain. The padrón certificate is the strongest, because Spanish law says padrón data "constituyen prueba de la residencia" in the municipality (Ley 7/1985, art. 16).
  4. Proof of work or income: a contract, payslips, a university enrolment letter or a pension statement.
  5. A Spanish phone number for security codes.
  6. Answers on the source of any large deposit, for example savings brought from Nigeria.

Documents from Nigeria, such as a letter from your Nigerian employer, may need a sworn Spanish translation. The University of Deusto's guide lists who can do this: a traductor jurado authorised in Spain, a Spanish mission abroad, or an official translator whose signature is legalised.

The basic payment account

Directive 2014/92/EU, adopted on 23 July 2014 and in force from 17 September 2014, deals with fee comparison, account switching and "access to payment accounts with basic features". In Spain this is the cuenta de pago básica. It is a simple account for receiving and sending money and using a debit card, without overdrafts. If a bank refuses you a standard account, ask in writing for a cuenta de pago básica and for the written reason if that is refused too. Fees and eligibility conditions for it are set in Spanish rules; ask the bank for its current terms.

A worked example of a first month

Example only. Funmi arrives in Seville for a job starting on the 1st.

  1. Week 1: she opens a non-resident account with her passport so her employer has an account to pay into; the bank asks for her job contract.
  2. Week 2: she signs a flat lease and registers on the padrón with it.
  3. Week 4: her TIE arrives. She returns to the bank with the TIE and padrón certificate and asks to convert the account to resident.
  4. Month 2: her salary arrives, and she sets up rent and electricity direct debits.

What to compare between banks

  • Maintenance fee. Many accounts are fee-free only if you pay in a salary or meet other conditions. Ask what happens if you miss them.
  • International transfers. Sending money to Nigeria from a Spanish bank is usually a SWIFT payment with its own fee and exchange margin; ask for both before the first transfer. See SWIFT transfers from a Spanish bank.
  • Receiving from Nigeria. Ask whether incoming transfers from outside the SEPA area carry a charge.
  • Bizum and cards. Check the account supports Bizum and a debit card from day one.
  • Language and app. An app and support in English can help in your first months.

Ask for the pre-contract information sheet and the fee list, before you sign, and keep them.

If the bank says no

  • Ask which document was missing and come back with it, rather than starting again elsewhere.
  • Check names match exactly between passport, NIE and contract.
  • Ask for the basic payment account.
  • Keep a record of what you were told and when.

Spanish banks may ask about transfers from Nigeria at any time; see when your bank asks about money from Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can be opened from any country with a Nigerian passport, before you have a NIE. It holds euros alongside naira, dollars and pounds, with local account details for each, so you can receive euros, pay in euros and send to Nigeria while your Spanish account is being set up. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners. See the multicurrency account and how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Can I open a bank account in Spain with only a Nigerian passport?

Often only a non-resident account. For a resident account banks usually also want your NIE or TIE and proof of address.

Do I need a NIE to open a bank account in Spain?

Most banks require it for resident accounts. Some open non-resident accounts with a passport alone.

What is a cuenta de pago básica?

A basic payment account for receiving, sending and card payments, created under EU directive 2014/92/EU. Ask for it by name if refused.

Is the padrón proof of address for Spanish banks?

Yes. Spanish law says padrón data are proof of residence in the municipality, and banks commonly ask for the certificate.
