Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spain

Using a Nigerian dollar card in Spain: FX charges

What happens when a Nigerian USD card pays in euros: the two conversions, the bank fees banks publish, card limits, and the DCC prompt to decline.

The short answer

When a Nigerian dollar card pays in euros, the card network converts the euro amount into dollars and your bank may add its own fee; Fidelity Bank, for example, lists a 3% charge on dollar-card transactions in currencies other than dollars. Choose to pay in euros, not dollars, at the terminal, and check your card’s daily limits before you rely on it.

A dollar debit card from a Nigerian domiciliary account is often the first card Nigerians use after arriving in Spain, before a Spanish account is open. It works, but each euro payment passes through at least one currency conversion and usually a bank fee. This guide shows how the charges stack up, using what Nigerian banks publish on their own pages.

The conversion chain

Your card account holds dollars; the shop in Spain charges euros. Between them:

  1. The Spanish shop or ATM sends a euro amount.
  2. The card network (Visa or Mastercard) converts euros into dollars at its own rate on the processing date.
  3. Your Nigerian bank debits the dollars and may add a percentage fee for a transaction in another currency.
  4. At an ATM, the Spanish ATM owner may add its own charge.

If you accept the terminal’s offer to charge you “in dollars”, a further conversion is added at the shop’s or ATM provider’s rate; see the DCC section below.

What Nigerian banks publish

Bank and cardWhat its own page says
Fidelity Bank dollar card2% charge on dollar-to-dollar transactions and 3% on dollar to other currencies, plus ATM owner charges; maintenance $10 a year; limit $5,000 (ATM $1,000, POS/web $5,000)
Wema MasterCard Dollar Debit Card (Dec 2021 help article)Card fee $3, annual $10, ATM $2 per withdrawal, POS and web free; daily limits ATM $1,000, POS $10,000, web $5,000
Stanbic IBTC USD debit cardDaily ATM $1,000, web $3,500, POS $6,500; the cards FAQ gives no fees

The CBN Guide to Charges (effective January 2020) sets foreign currency card maintenance at $10 a year. Other banks’ charges were not confirmed on their own pages when we checked in October 2026; the bank’s tariff guide or app shows the current figure. Fees and limits change, so treat the table as dated to the sources listed.

A worked example

Example only; the rate is illustrative. You pay €200 for shopping in Madrid with a dollar card that charges 3% on non-dollar transactions, as Fidelity lists. If the network rate that day is €1 = $1.10, the euro amount becomes $220.00. The 3% fee adds $6.60, so $226.60 leaves your domiciliary account. If you had accepted the terminal’s offer to pay in dollars at a worse rate, say €1 = $1.15, you would pay $230.00 for the conversion against $220.00 at the network rate, so in this example declining DCC saves $10.00 before fees, and some banks may still apply their own fee on top of a DCC amount.

DCC: choose euros at the terminal

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is when a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your card’s currency instead of the local one. Asda Money’s explainer describes the DCC rate as set by the retailer or its bank (at an ATM, the local bank), while paying in local currency uses the card provider’s rate, which is often better though “not always”. In Spain, choose euros when asked.

What about naira cards?

Naira cards are a weaker option for Spain. Fidelity Bank’s FAQ says individual naira cards “are not permitted for international transactions across all channels as mandated by CBN”. Other banks allow some international use within caps; Nairametrics reported in September 2026 that several banks had raised limits on naira cards, for example Zenith up to $50,000 a year and GTBank $40,000 a quarter. Those limits come with the bank’s own conversion from naira, so the cost is usually higher and less predictable. See our guide to using Nigerian cards in Spain.

Practical points

  • Tell your bank you are in Spain if its app has a travel notice setting.
  • Check your daily POS, web and ATM limits before paying rent deposits or large bills.
  • Use ATMs sparingly; you may pay both your bank’s fee and the Spanish ATM owner’s charge.
  • Keep an eye on the domiciliary balance in the app; a declined card abroad is harder to fix.

When a Spanish account makes more sense

A dollar card is a bridge, not a long-term answer, if you live and spend in euros. Every payment carries a conversion and, at some banks, a percentage fee, and recurring Spanish costs such as rent and utilities are usually collected by euro direct debit from an account in the EU, which a Nigerian card cannot provide. Once you have a NIE and an address, opening a euro account removes the conversion on everyday spending; our guide to opening a Spanish bank account with a Nigerian passport explains the steps. Keep the dollar card for travel, online purchases in dollars, or as a backup.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds EUR as well as USD, NGN and GBP, so euro costs can be paid from euros rather than through a dollar conversion, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you move money between currencies. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Can I use my Nigerian dollar card in Spain?

Yes, within its limits. The card network converts each euro payment into dollars and your bank may add a fee; check your bank’s tariff and daily limits.

How much does a Nigerian bank charge for card payments in euros?

It varies by bank. Fidelity Bank lists 3% on dollar-card transactions in other currencies. Check your own bank’s tariff guide.

Should I pay in dollars or euros with my card in Spain?

Euros. Choosing dollars at the terminal triggers dynamic currency conversion at a rate set by the shop or ATM provider.

Can I use a naira card in Spain?

Some banks do not allow international use of naira cards; others allow it within caps. A dollar card is usually the more workable option.
