Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Lagos

Opening a mini-mart in Lagos: permits, premises and setup

The Lagos steps for a mini-mart or provisions shop: LIRS premises registration, signage, the shop lease, packaging rules and stocking.

The short answer

To open a mini-mart in Lagos, register the business with CAC, register the premises on the LIRS e-tax portal and pay the business premises levy it bills, get signage approved before you mount a sign, and sign a lease that respects the Lagos Tenancy Law. Then plan stock, power and packaging around Lagos conditions, including the state's ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics.

Start with the location, not the shelves

A mini-mart lives or dies on footfall within walking distance. In Lagos that usually means one of three patterns: an estate shop serving a closed community in places like Lekki, Magodo or Festac; a roadside shop near a bus stop or BRT station where commuters stop on the way home; or a shop on a busy street in a dense area such as Yaba, Surulere or Ikorodu town. Each has a different peak. Estate shops sell steadily through the day and at weekends; bus-stop shops sell hard in the evening rush.

Spend a week watching the street before you sign anything. Count people passing at different times, note what the nearest competitors stock and how they price, and ask neighbours whether the street floods in the rainy season, because a flooded frontage can close you for days.

The Lagos registrations, in order

  1. CAC first. Register a business name or a company. Lagos agencies and banks will ask for the number. See how to register a business name with CAC.
  2. LIRS e-tax account. Create a business account on the Lagos Internal Revenue Service e-tax portal, choose the corporate taxpayer type and enter your CAC number.
  3. Business premises registration. On the same portal, generate a bill for the Business Premises revenue item, select the agency nearest your shop and the payment period, pay it, and keep the emailed receipt.
  4. Signage. Lagos signage is regulated by LASAA. Get approval before a sign goes up rather than after an enforcement visit. Our guide to shop signs in Lagos covers the process.
  5. Waste. Arrange refuse collection for the premises and keep the receipts with your other permits.

Your lease: what the Tenancy Law says

The Lagos State Tenancy Law 2011 applies to business premises as well as homes, except in Apapa, Ikeja GRA, Ikoyi and Victoria Island, which are exempt. Where it applies, a landlord may not demand more than one year's rent in advance from a new tenant, and a tenant is not allowed to offer more. The landlord must issue a receipt for every rent payment showing the date, both parties, the property, the amount and the period covered. Insist on that receipt; it is your evidence if a dispute starts.

Packaging and the styrofoam ban

In January 2024 the Lagos commissioner for environment announced a ban on the use and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics, with LAWMA and the Kick Against Indiscipline team told to enforce it. For a mini-mart that means planning for reusable or paper bags rather than thin nylon, and not stocking styrofoam take-away packs for resale. Ask suppliers what compliant alternatives they carry before your first order.

Stock, power and cash flow

Buying

Most Lagos mini-marts buy from a mix of wholesalers at markets such as Mile 12, Oyingbo, Idumota and Trade Fair, distributor vans that call on shops, and cash-and-carry outlets. Distributors often offer better terms once you show regular orders. Keep fast movers in stock (water, drinks, noodles, bread, toiletries, detergents) and test slower lines in small quantities.

Power

Your electricity will come from Eko Electric or Ikeja Electric depending on the area. Cold drinks and frozen goods depend on steady power, so budget for a generator or inverter backup, and buy prepaid tokens before weekends.

A worked example

Item (example figures)Naira
One year's shop rent1,800,000
Shelving, counter, chiller950,000
Opening stock2,500,000
Inverter and batteries1,200,000
Registrations, signage, levies (allow)300,000
Working capital for 3 months750,000
Example total7,500,000

These are illustrative numbers, not quotes. Price each line yourself in your chosen area; rents in Lekki and Ikeja differ sharply from those in Ikorodu or Alimosho.

Hours, security and the first ninety days

Lagos customers shop early and late. A bus-stop mini-mart that opens at 6.30am catches workers buying bread and water on the way to the BRT or the ferry jetty, and one that stays open past 9pm catches the return rush. Longer hours mean at least two shifts, so decide early whether you or a trusted relative will close each night.

Security is part of the setup cost: burglar-proof doors, a safe or a policy of banking takings daily, and CCTV over the till if you can afford it. Encourage transfers to the business account over cash to reduce what sits in the drawer overnight. For the first ninety days, record sales by product every evening. That record tells you what to reorder, what to drop and when to adjust prices, and it is far more reliable than memory. Pair it with a daily end-of-day cash-up.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives the shop its own account with bank-transfer checkout at 0.5% capped at ₦2,000, so customer transfers land in a named business account rather than a staff member's phone. Spaces operates in Lagos, and a mini-mart in the grocery and retail sector can apply to join and reach customers whose Loans on Spaces can only be spent inside the network. Ask Pryme about merchant terms. For the wider national picture, read how to start a supermarket or mini-mart in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to open a provisions shop in Lagos?

You need CAC registration, registration of the premises with LIRS and payment of the business premises levy it bills, and approval for any sign. Pay through the official portal and keep the receipts.

How much rent can a Lagos landlord collect upfront for a shop?

Under the Lagos Tenancy Law 2011, no more than one year's rent from a new tenant, outside the exempt areas of Apapa, Ikeja GRA, Ikoyi and Victoria Island.

Can I still sell in nylon bags in Lagos?

Lagos announced a ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics in January 2024. Plan for reusable or paper bags and check current enforcement with your local environment office.

Which area of Lagos is best for a mini-mart?

There is no single best area. Busy bus stops suit evening trade, estates suit steady daily trade. Watch footfall for a week before signing a lease.
