Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to start a supermarket or mini-mart in Nigeria

Registration, location, stock, suppliers and cash control for a new supermarket or mini-mart in Nigeria, step by step and without guesswork.

The short answer

To start a supermarket or mini-mart in Nigeria, register the business with the CAC, get a tax ID, secure a shop in a street with steady foot traffic, and build your first stock list around fast-moving staples from reliable distributors. Only stock packaged foods that carry a NAFDAC registration number and are within date, and set up payments and stock records before you open.

Step 1: decide what kind of shop you are opening

A mini-mart and a supermarket do the same job at different scales. A mini-mart usually serves a few streets or an estate with daily essentials. A supermarket serves a wider area and carries a deeper range, often with fresh produce, toiletries and household goods. Your choice affects the size of the shop you rent, how much stock you carry and how many staff you need.

Start by walking the area at different times of day. Count the shops already selling the same things, note what they are out of, and ask residents where they buy what they cannot find nearby. A gap you can see with your own eyes is better evidence than any general claim about the market.

Step 2: register the business properly

You can trade as a registered business name or as a private limited company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). A company is a separate legal person, which matters once you sign leases and supplier contracts. For a private company, CAC charges a fee of ₦10,000 for an issued share capital of ₦1 million, plus ₦5,000 for each additional ₦1 million, and the memorandum and articles attract stamp duty at 0.75% of issued share capital. Agents' professional fees are extra.

Under the tax laws that took effect on 1 January 2026, a small company with turnover below ₦100 million and assets below ₦250 million is exempt from companies income tax, capital gains tax and the new development levy, provided it is registered with the CAC. Keep records from the first day so you can show that you qualify. Our guide on verifying a Nigerian company shows what suppliers and partners will check about you.

Step 3: choose a location and set up the shop

  • Foot traffic and visibility from the road matter more than floor size for a mini-mart.
  • Check the lease for the length of term, how rent increases, who handles repairs and whether you can display signage.
  • Plan shelving so staples sit at the back and impulse items near the till.
  • Budget for power backup and a fridge if you will sell chilled drinks or dairy.
  • Install a lockable store room and decide who holds the keys.

Step 4: build a first stock list and supplier base

Most new shops overstock slow lines and run out of the items customers come in for. Start narrow: rice, beans, garri, noodles, pasta, oil, sugar, beverages, bread, toiletries, cleaning products and drinks. Add lines when customers ask for them more than once.

Product safety rules you cannot skip

NAFDAC tells shoppers to check four things on packaged food: the date marking, the ingredient list, the nutrition panel and the NAFDAC registration number. Customers who are careful will check your shelves the same way, so refuse unregistered or expired goods from suppliers and rotate stock so the oldest dates sell first. If you plan to pack your own branded rice or spices, that product needs its own NAFDAC registration; see our guide to starting a food business from home.

Working with distributors

  1. Buy from manufacturers' appointed distributors where you can, so you can trace stock if there is a recall.
  2. Ask each supplier for their delivery days, minimum order and payment terms in writing.
  3. Keep at least two suppliers for your top ten items.
  4. Pay by bank transfer so every purchase leaves a record you can match to an invoice.

Step 5: control cash and stock from day one

Shrinkage, the gap between what you bought and what you sold, is where small shops lose money. Count your top items weekly, record every delivery against its invoice and reconcile the till daily. A simple table like the one below is enough to start.

Item (example)Opening stockReceivedSoldClosing countGap
50kg rice6101141 bag missing
Vegetable oil 1L244860120
Noodles carton10202550

Worked example (illustrative): if a carton of noodles costs you ₦12,000 and you sell its contents for ₦14,400 in total, your gross margin is ₦2,400 or 20%. One missing carton wipes out the margin on five sold cartons, which is why the weekly count matters.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account keeps shop money separate from personal money and gives you bank-transfer checkout at 0.5% capped at ₦2,000, with Finance and Sales agents that prepare reconciliations and supplier payments for a person to approve. Grocery and retail is a supported Spaces sector, so a supermarket or mini-mart with a Business Account can join Spaces and reach customers who hold Loans on Spaces: credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. That gives you paying customers whose spending is tied to the network. To ask about merchant fees and settlement, contact Pryme.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to register a supermarket business in Nigeria?

For a private company, CAC charges ₦10,000 for issued share capital of ₦1 million, plus stamp duty of 0.75% of issued share capital and any agent's fee. Business name fees are shown on the CAC portal when you apply.

Do I need NAFDAC approval to sell provisions?

You do not register products you only resell, but every packaged food you sell should already carry a NAFDAC registration number. If you repackage or brand your own products, those need their own registration.

Will my mini-mart pay company income tax?

Under the laws in force from 1 January 2026, a CAC-registered small company with turnover below ₦100 million and assets below ₦250 million is exempt from companies income tax. You still need a tax ID and records.

What should a mini-mart stock first?

Start with fast-moving staples, drinks, toiletries and cleaning products, then add lines when customers request them more than once.
