Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Opening a bank account after moving to Abuja

New to the FCT? What banks and fintechs in Abuja ask for, how the FCT tax clearance rule may affect you, and how to check an institution is licensed.

The short answer

To open an account in Abuja you generally need your BVN, NIN, a valid ID, a phone number and proof of address, with higher KYC tiers needing more. Since 2023, FCT rules have required banks to demand and verify a tax clearance certificate before providing some services, so ask the bank what applies to you before you visit.

Most people moving to Abuja already have an account somewhere in Nigeria and can keep using it. But many open a new one: a salary account for an FCT employer, an account with a branch near their new office in the Central Business District or Wuse, or a separate account for rent savings. The basics are national; a few points are particular to the FCT.

What you will usually be asked for

  • BVN (Bank Verification Number), linked to your identity across Nigerian banks.
  • NIN (National Identification Number).
  • A valid ID, such as an international passport, driver's licence, voter's card or national ID card.
  • A phone number registered in your name.
  • Proof of address, often a utility bill. If you have just moved, an AEDC bill or token receipt in your name for your Abuja address helps, so update your electricity account early.
  • A passport photograph for some branch-based accounts.

The documents you need depend on the KYC tier of the account, and the tier decides how much you can hold and send. See KYC tiers in Nigeria: Tier 1, 2 and 3 limits for the national rules, and BVN vs NIN if you are not sure which number is which.

The FCT tax clearance rule

In October 2023 the FCT Minister approved rules, under section 85 of the Personal Income Tax Act and section 31 of the FCT Internal Revenue Service Act 2015, requiring commercial banks, federal ministries, departments and agencies, and FCT agencies to demand and verify a tax clearance certificate before providing services to individuals and organisations in the FCT. Institutions that fail to demand or verify one were made liable to a ₦5 million fine, three years' imprisonment, or both.

The announcement did not list which banking services are covered, and practice may differ between banks and branches. Before you go, call the bank or ask the account officer whether they will ask for a tax clearance certificate for the account or service you want. If they do, the FCT Internal Revenue Service issues one; our guide to FCT-IRS tax clearance certificates explains how to apply.

Choosing where to bank

QuestionWhy it matters in Abuja
Is there a branch or agent near home and work?Useful if you live in Lugbe or Kubwa and work in the city centre, for the times you need a person.
Does the app work well for bills? You will pay AEDC tokens, data and possibly estate service charge often.
What are transfer and card charges?Small charges add up across many monthly payments.
Is it licensed and insured?Check before depositing anything.
How good is fraud support? You want a reachable team if something goes wrong.

Check the licence

Every CBN-licensed deposit-taking institution, including commercial banks and microfinance banks, is insured by the NDIC, which pays depositors up to the insured limit if a licence is revoked. Before you deposit, confirm the institution is licensed; our guide on checking a CBN licence shows how.

If your employer is in the FCT

Many people move to Abuja for a job with a ministry, an agency, an embassy or a company headquartered in the city. Your employer may ask for an account at a particular bank for salary, or may pay into any Nigerian account you name. Before opening a new account just for salary, ask HR three questions:

  1. Do you require a specific bank, or will any licensed bank do?
  2. Which documents do you need from me to set up salary payments?
  3. When is the first salary paid, and is there a delay for new staff while records are set up?

The third question matters more than people think. A first salary that arrives six weeks after you start, on top of a year's rent paid upfront, can leave you short in your first month. Plan a buffer for it. The FCT-IRS lists PAYE as due at the end of every month, and your employer deducts it before paying you, so keep your payslips: they are the basis of any later tax clearance application.

Protect the new account from day one

  1. Set a transaction PIN that is not your birthday or phone number.
  2. Use an authenticator app for sign-in where the app offers one, rather than relying on SMS codes alone.
  3. Never share your PIN or one-time codes with anyone claiming to be from the bank, even if they know your BVN.
  4. Save the bank's official customer care number from its website, not from a social media page.

Where Pryme fits

If you want an account you can open from your phone without a branch visit, you can open a Pryme Personal Account from anywhere in Nigeria or abroad. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Pryme uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes and a transaction PIN; see how Pryme security works. The same account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and you can pay AEDC tokens and other bills from the app.

Questions people ask

What documents do I need to open a bank account in Abuja?

Usually BVN, NIN, a valid ID, a phone number in your name and proof of address. Higher KYC tiers need more.

Do Abuja banks ask for a tax clearance certificate?

FCT rules approved in 2023 require banks in the FCT to demand and verify a tax clearance certificate before providing some services. Ask your bank what applies to the account you want.

Can I use a Lagos bank account in Abuja?

Yes. Nigerian bank accounts work nationwide. You only need a new account if you want a different bank, a salary account or a separate pot.

What can I use as proof of address in Abuja?

A utility bill such as an AEDC bill or token receipt in your name is common. Ask the bank what else it accepts if you have just moved.
