Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What 'obtaining by false pretence' means in Nigerian law

The elements of obtaining by false pretence, how it differs from an unpaid debt, the penalty under the 2006 Act, and the evidence police ask for.

The short answer

Obtaining by false pretence is an offence under section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006: getting money or property from someone by a false pretence, with intent to defraud. On conviction the Act sets a term of 7 to 20 years without the option of a fine, and section 11 says the court shall order restitution to the victim. A debt that someone simply failed to repay is not, on its own, false pretence.

Many Nigerians use "419" and "obtaining by false pretence" for any case where money went and did not come back. The law is narrower. Before you walk into a police station or write a petition, it helps to know what has to be proved, because the officer will be asking the same questions.

The offence in plain terms

The offence sits in section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 (often shortened to AFFA). It covers a person who, by a false pretence and with intent to defraud, obtains property from another person or induces someone to deliver property. "Property" is read widely and includes money sent by transfer.

Section 1(3) sets the punishment: imprisonment for not less than 7 years and not more than 20 years, with no option of a fine. Section 8 makes conspiracy to commit the offence punishable in the same way, which matters when a group shares the work. Section 14 gives jurisdiction to the Federal High Court, the High Court of the FCT and State High Courts.

What has to be shown

  1. A pretence: a statement or representation, by words, documents or conduct. A fake job offer, a fake supplier invoice or a photo of goods the person never had can all be the pretence.
  2. It was false, and the person knew it: the representation was untrue when made, and the accused knew or did not believe it was true.
  3. Intent to defraud: the purpose was to make the victim part with something they would not otherwise give.
  4. The property moved because of the pretence: you paid or handed over goods because you believed the false statement.

False pretence or a civil debt?

This is where most complaints fail. A person who borrowed money and later could not or would not pay usually owes a civil debt. A person who made up a story at the start to get the money may have committed a crime. The question is what was true at the moment the money changed hands.

FactsLikely civil debtPossible false pretence
Friend borrowed ₦300,000 for rent, lost his job, now avoids youYes: a real need, a later failure to payUnlikely, unless the story was invented
Seller took ₦150,000 for a phone, sent nothing, blocked you, page vanishedPossibly, if the seller was genuine and failedStrong signs if the stock never existed
Contractor collected a deposit with a forged company letterLess likelyYes: the forged document is the pretence
Business partner's venture lost money after honest effortYes: a commercial lossNo, without proof of a lie at the start

Figures in the table are examples. Police and prosecutors also look at conduct after the payment: switching off phones, fake names, several victims with the same story and accounts opened in other names all point towards an intent to defraud from the beginning.

If your case looks like a debt, the civil route is a demand letter, mediation or a small claims action. If it looks like false pretence, you can report it and still pursue civil recovery; the two are not exclusive.

The evidence police and the EFCC ask for

Investigators need to see the pretence, the payment and the link between them. Gather this before you report:

  • Screenshots of the chats, adverts or calls where the false claim was made, with dates visible and the phone number or handle shown.
  • Proof of payment: bank alerts, transfer receipts and an account statement showing the debit and the recipient account name and number.
  • Any document the person gave you, such as invoices, letters, ID cards or contracts.
  • Names and numbers of witnesses, or other victims if you know of them.
  • A short written timeline: who said what, when you paid, when contact stopped.

If the case later goes to court, statements and printouts are computer-generated records, and the prosecution will need to meet the Evidence Act rules on them. Our guide to Section 84 and bank records explains why a certificate matters.

Where to report

  • Your bank, first, if the money moved recently. Ask the fraud desk to flag the recipient account. Our first-hour checklist is at lost money to fraud.
  • The police: a written complaint at your local division, or the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre's e-reporting portal, launched in May 2024 at nccc.npf.gov.ng/ereport for online cases.
  • The EFCC: a petition for fraud, including through its Eagle Eye app launched in July 2021. See how to report fraud to the police and EFCC.

If the false pretence was made online, for example through a fake website or social media page, the Cybercrimes Act 2015 may apply too: section 12(2) covers misleading electronic messages sent with intent to defraud, with a minimum of 5 years or ₦10 million.

Restitution: can you get the money back?

Section 11(1) of the 2006 Act says that on conviction the High Court shall order the offender to restore the property or pay its value to the victim. That is useful, but it comes at the end of a trial and depends on there being assets to recover. It is not a fund that pays you while the case runs. Our guide to compensation for scam victims covers the other routes.

What to check first

  1. Write down exactly what the person told you before you paid, and whether it was false at that time.
  2. Collect payment proof and the recipient's account details.
  3. Decide whether this is a broken promise (debt) or an invented story (possible crime).
  4. Report in writing and keep a copy with the date stamped or the case reference.

Where Pryme fits

Strong records make any complaint easier. Pryme customers can generate a verifiable receipt or statement through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. See verifiable receipts.

Questions people ask

Is obtaining by false pretence bailable in Nigeria?

Bail depends on the court and the facts. The offence carries 7 to 20 years under section 1(3) of the 2006 Act, so courts treat it seriously. Ask a lawyer about bail in a specific case.

Can the police arrest someone who owes me money?

A simple unpaid debt is a civil matter. Police involvement is proper where there is evidence of a crime, such as a false story told to obtain the money. Keep evidence of the pretence, not just the debt.

What is the punishment for 419 in Nigeria?

Under section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, obtaining by false pretence carries not less than 7 and not more than 20 years, without the option of a fine.

Will I get my money back if the person is convicted?

Section 11(1) says the court shall order restitution to the victim on conviction. Actual recovery depends on whether the offender has money or property that can be reached.
