Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Office of the Public Defender Lagos: who it helps

What the Lagos Office of the Public Defender does, who it serves, how to reach it, and when another free route such as mediation fits your case better.

The short answer

The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) is a Lagos State agency that provides free legal services to people who cannot afford a lawyer. The Lagos Ministry of Justice says it was set up under the OPD Law of 2003, has five offices across the state and is funded entirely by the state government. The Ministry's page does not publish a formal means test, so you approach the office, explain your circumstances and it decides whether to take your case.

Lagos is one of the few states with its own public defender, separate from the federal Legal Aid Council. If you live in Lagos, cannot pay a lawyer and face a legal problem, it is one of the first places to ask. This guide uses what the Lagos State Ministry of Justice publishes about the office and is clear about what it does not say.

What the OPD is

According to the Ministry, the OPD began in July 2000 as a sub-department of the Directorate for Citizens' Rights. It was established under the OPD Law, 2003, which was reviewed in January 2008. The Ministry describes it as an autonomous institution whose main purpose is "providing free legal services to the indigent", including free legal representation and protecting constitutional rights. The state government is its sole funder.

Who it helps

The Ministry's page refers to the indigent: people who cannot afford a lawyer. It does not publish an income threshold, a list of required documents or a list of case types. That means:

  • There is no published figure to check yourself against. Explain your income, dependants and situation truthfully when you visit.
  • The office decides whether to take your case. Bring documents that show both your problem and your circumstances.
  • The page mentions defence and constitutional rights, so if you have been arrested or detained, or your rights have been breached, say so at once.

Because the case types are not published, do not assume the OPD will take on a commercial or debt claim. Ask.

How to approach the office

  1. Call first. The Ministry's website lists 08146671562 as a Free Legal Line. It is presented for the Ministry generally, so ask to be directed to the OPD office nearest you.
  2. Find the nearest office. The Ministry says the OPD has five offices "at strategic areas of Lagos State", but does not list the addresses on that page. The Ministry's secretariat is at Alausa, Ikeja.
  3. Bring your papers. ID, any court papers or police documents, letters, receipts and statements, and anything that shows you cannot afford a lawyer.
  4. Explain briefly. Who the other party is, what happened, when, and what you want.

For money disputes: which Lagos route fits

SituationFree route to tryWhy
Someone owes you money and can be foundCitizens' Mediation CentreHandles monetary claims for free, with an enforceable agreement
You are being prosecuted, or detained over a debtOffice of the Public DefenderFree legal representation and rights protection
Dispute with a bankBank complaints, then CBN Consumer Protection DepartmentThe regulator can direct the bank
You need a court case and cannot payOPD, or the Legal Aid Council if your case is coveredBoth offer free representation within their remits

The Citizens' Mediation Centre, also part of the Ministry of Justice, settles debts, rent, employment and family disputes for free; see Citizens' Mediation Centre Lagos. The federal Legal Aid Council covers listed criminal matters and some civil claims.

Worked example

This is an example. Kemi, a trader in Lagos, borrowed ₦150,000 from a lender who has since had her arrested and held at a station overnight, saying she will stay there until she pays. A debt is a civil matter, and detention to force payment may raise a rights issue. Her brother calls the Free Legal Line, explains that she is detained and cannot afford a lawyer, and asks for the nearest OPD office. Separately, once she is free, the debt itself can go to mediation at the Citizens' Mediation Centre, where a repayment plan of, say, ₦25,000 a month for six months would clear the ₦150,000.

What the OPD is unlikely to do

A public defender's job is legal help. It is not a debt collector, and it does not lend money or pay what you owe. If you have lost money to a scam, the OPD cannot trace the funds; the police and your bank are the right first calls, because only they can ask the receiving bank to hold the money. If your problem is with a bank's charges or a failed transfer, the bank's complaints process and the CBN are faster and also free. Use the OPD when you need a lawyer's help in a legal process, such as a court case, a detention or a rights issue.

What to check first

  • Call the Free Legal Line and confirm the office and its hours before you travel.
  • Gather proof of your income or lack of it.
  • Write a one-page summary of your case in date order.
  • If your issue is a debt with no rights issue, consider the Citizens' Mediation Centre first.

This is general information, not legal advice. For fraud losses, see reporting fraud to the police and EFCC.

Questions people ask

Is the Office of the Public Defender in Lagos free?

Yes. The Lagos Ministry of Justice says the OPD provides free legal services to the indigent and is funded by the state government.

Who qualifies for the Lagos public defender?

The Ministry refers to the indigent, people who cannot afford a lawyer, but does not publish an income test. The office assesses each person.

How do I contact the OPD in Lagos?

The Ministry's website lists a Free Legal Line, 08146671562. Ask to be directed to the nearest of the OPD's five offices.

Can the OPD help me recover money someone owes me?

The Ministry does not list case types. For a simple debt, the Citizens' Mediation Centre, which handles monetary claims for free, may suit better.
