Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Section 84 Evidence Act: electronic bank records in court

Why bank statements need a Section 84 foundation in Nigerian courts, what the certificate must say, who should sign it, and where litigants go wrong.

The short answer

Bank statements are computer-generated records, so to rely on them in a Nigerian court you must lay the foundation in section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011: either a certificate under section 84(4) or oral evidence showing the conditions in section 84(2) are met. The certificate identifies the document, describes how it was produced and is signed by someone in a responsible position over the computer system; statements tendered without that foundation have been expunged on appeal.

If you are suing a bank, a borrower, a contractor or a fraudster, your bank statement is often the centre of the case. Nigerian courts have thrown out statements because the party did not prove they came from a reliable computer system. This guide explains what section 84 requires, based on recent commentary and Court of Appeal and Supreme Court decisions. It is information, not legal advice; your lawyer handles the actual tendering.

Why bank statements are caught by section 84

Section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011 governs statements in documents produced by computers. Statements of account are printed from a bank's core system, so courts have treated them as computer-generated. The Court of Appeal said so in Rosehill Ltd v GTB Plc (2016) LPELR-41665(CA) and UBN Plc v Agbontaen (2018) LPELR-44160(CA), and the Supreme Court treated a bank statement as computer-generated in A.-G. Federation v Anuebunwa (2022).

One Court of Appeal decision, BUA International Ltd v SAIMA (Nig.) Ltd (2023) LPELR-59533(CA), appears to take a different view, holding bank statements did not need section 84(2) compliance. Given the Supreme Court position, most lawyers still lay the foundation.

The two ways to lay the foundation

1. A certificate under section 84(4)

According to a September 2026 analysis published by TheNigeriaLawyer, the certificate must:

  • identify the document (for example, the statement of account for a named account and period);
  • describe the manner in which it was produced;
  • give particulars of the device or system involved;
  • deal with the conditions in section 84(2), including that the computer was working properly and was regularly supplied with the information; and
  • be signed by a person occupying a responsible position in relation to the operation of the device or the management of the relevant activities.

2. Oral evidence

The Supreme Court in Dickson v Sylva held that the conditions can be proved either by certificate or by oral evidence. In Jubril v FRN (2018) LPELR-43993(CA), oral evidence from someone familiar with the computer's operation was enough, and the Court of Appeal in IGP v Bello (2023) said a certificate is not an extra requirement where the foundation is laid orally.

Who should sign

The signatory matters. In Ayoola & Anor v Dominion Trust Ltd & Ors (2025), the Court of Appeal held that a person not in control of the device generally cannot validly certify that it was in good working condition. That raises a practical question for individuals:

Who tenders the statementWho commonly signs the certificatePoint to watch
The bank, in a case it is party toAn officer responsible for the bank's systems or recordsMust be someone with real responsibility for the system
A customer, using a statement the bank printedOften a bank officer, on requestAsk the bank early; it can take time
A customer, using a statement downloaded from an app and printed at homeSometimes the customer, for their own phone and printerThe bank's system produced the data, so the court may want more; ask your lawyer

Because of Ayoola, it is worth asking the bank itself for a certified statement with a section 84 certificate, rather than relying on a home printout.

Common failures

  1. No certificate and no oral foundation. In Polaris Bank v Centre Point Travel Agency (2022), the Court of Appeal expunged a statement because no certificate was tendered, even though it had been admitted without objection at trial.
  2. The wrong person signs. A signatory with no control over the system may produce an invalid certificate (Ayoola, 2025).
  3. Tendering from the bar. Handing statements in through counsel without any foundation was the problem in Rosehill.
  4. Public documents. Where the electronic record is a public document, Ayoola says section 104 certification is also needed.

What the 2023 amendment changed

The Evidence (Amendment) Act 2023, signed on 12 June 2023, does not repeal the 2011 Act. According to ALN's summary, it adds "electronic records" as a category of admissible evidence, inserts section 84B so that a printout or copy of an electronic record is treated as a document and can be admitted without proof of the original if the Act's conditions are met, and recognises digital signatures. The foundation requirement remains.

What to check first

  • Request a stamped statement from the bank for the exact period, early.
  • Ask the bank for a section 84 certificate signed by a responsible officer.
  • Keep the original electronic version and the email or app it came from.
  • Tell your lawyer how each document was produced so they can decide between certificate and oral evidence.

For how forged statements are detected, see doctored bank statements, and for evidence in disputes generally, payment dispute evidence.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme customers can generate a verifiable statement through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. Whether a court admits it is still governed by section 84. See verifiable receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

What is a Section 84 certificate in Nigeria?

A certificate under section 84(4) of the Evidence Act 2011 that identifies a computer-generated document, describes how it was produced and confirms the section 84(2) conditions, signed by someone in a responsible position over the system.

Is a bank statement admissible without a certificate?

Courts have expunged statements tendered with no certificate and no oral foundation, for example in Polaris Bank v Centre Point Travel Agency (2022). Oral evidence from someone familiar with the system can sometimes replace the certificate.

Who signs the Section 84 certificate for a bank statement?

A person in a responsible position over the device or system. The Court of Appeal in Ayoola v Dominion Trust (2025) held someone not in control of the device generally cannot certify it.

Did the Evidence Amendment Act 2023 remove Section 84?

No. The 2023 Act, signed on 12 June 2023, kept the 2011 Act, added electronic records and section 84B on printouts, and recognised digital signatures.
