Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Owner abroad: serving a tenant notice through a lawyer

How a landlord living abroad ends a tenancy in Nigeria through a solicitor: notice periods, the 7-day notice, court recovery, and what not to do.

The short answer

Your solicitor can act for you: Lagos's Tenancy Law 2011 defines a landlord to include an attorney, solicitor or agent. The solicitor serves the correct notice to quit (for a yearly tenancy, six months where the agreement is silent), then a 7-day notice of intention to recover possession, and if the tenant stays, sues in court for possession. Forcing a tenant out yourself is an offence under the same law.

Ending a tenancy is hard enough when you live round the corner. From abroad, the temptation is to ask a caretaker to change the locks or a relative to "talk to" the tenant. That route can turn a rent dispute into a criminal complaint against you. Nigerian tenancy law sets out a fixed sequence, and a solicitor in the state where the property sits can run it for you.

This guide uses the Lagos State Tenancy Law 2011, which has the most detailed published procedure. Other states have their own laws with different periods and forms, so ask your solicitor which law applies.

Does the Lagos law apply to your property?

The law applies to residential and business premises across Lagos State, but section 1(3) exempts Apapa, Ikeja GRA, Ikoyi and Victoria Island (the Governor may exempt others). Lekki is not on the exempt list. If your property is in an exempt area, older rules apply; your solicitor will advise.

Step 1: the right notice to quit

Where the tenancy agreement does not set a notice period, section 13 provides:

Type of tenancyNotice to quit
Tenancy at will1 week
Monthly1 month
Quarterly3 months
Half-yearly3 months
Yearly6 months
Fixed term that has expiredNo notice to quit needed; 7-day notice of owner's intention to recover (Form TL5)

If the agreement sets its own notice period, that generally governs. A notice with the wrong period or wrong dates is a common reason landlords lose in court, so let the solicitor draft it.

Step 2: the 7-day notice

When a notice to quit expires and the tenant has not left, section 16 requires a further 7-day notice of the owner's intention to apply to court to recover possession (Form TL4). This is separate from the notice to quit and must also be served properly.

Serving notices when you are abroad

Section 47 defines "landlord" to include an attorney, solicitor, agent or caretaker, so the solicitor can sign and serve in your name. Section 18 allows service on a residential tenant personally, on an adult living at the premises, by courier with proof of delivery, or by fixing it to the premises with corroborating proof. Ask the solicitor for copies of each notice and the proof of service, dated.

Step 3: going to court

  • The claim is filed in the Magistrates' Court for the district where the premises are, or the High Court where the rental value exceeds the magistrates' limit (sections 2(4) and 24).
  • Grounds include rent arrears, breach of the tenancy, and the landlord's need for personal use; also illegal use, abandonment, unsafe premises and nuisance (section 25).
  • The court may refer the case to the Citizens Mediation Centre or the Lagos Multi-Door Court House (section 32).
  • If the tenant has no defence, the court can order possession immediately or within up to six months (section 27(4)), and can deal with arrears claimed at the rate stated.
  • Possession orders cannot be executed on a Sunday or public holiday (section 42).

What you must not do

Section 44(1) makes it an offence to forcibly eject a tenant, or to threaten, damage or demolish to make them leave, with a fine of up to ₦250,000 or up to 6 months' imprisonment. Instructions to a caretaker to cut power, remove doors or change locks fall in this territory. Section 4 also caps rent in advance: no more than 6 months from a monthly sitting tenant or 1 year from a yearly tenant, with a ₦100,000 fine or 3 months for breaches by either side.

A worked example

Example only. Ifeanyi in Manchester lets a flat in Yaba on a yearly tenancy with no notice clause, rent ₦3,000,000 a year, and wants to sell with vacant possession. The tenancy year ends on 30 April. His solicitor serves a 6-month notice to quit on 1 November, expiring on 30 April. If the tenant stays, a 7-day notice follows in early May, then a claim for possession. Allowing for the court's timetable, he plans for vacant possession no earlier than mid-year and pays the solicitor's fee from rent received in the meantime. Planning from the start of the tenancy year avoids a mid-term fight.

Before you start

  1. Find the tenancy agreement and every rent receipt; the law requires landlords to issue receipts (section 5).
  2. Instruct a solicitor in the state, with written authority. Our guide to checking a Nigerian lawyer is real helps.
  3. Decide your reason (sale, arrears, personal use), as it shapes the notice and the claim.
  4. Keep communication with the tenant in writing through the solicitor.

The Nigeria library's Lagos Tenancy Law guide covers rent advance and receipts in more depth, and managing tenants from abroad covers the day-to-day.

Where Pryme fits

Rent records decide many tenancy cases. Pryme customers can issue a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai for each rent payment received, which a court or tenant can check has not been altered. Rent can land in naira in your multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Can my lawyer serve a quit notice on my tenant while I am abroad?

Yes. The Lagos Tenancy Law 2011 defines a landlord to include an attorney, solicitor or agent, so your solicitor can sign and serve notices for you.

How much notice must I give a yearly tenant in Lagos?

Six months, where the tenancy agreement does not set its own period, under section 13 of the Lagos Tenancy Law 2011.

What is the 7-day notice in Lagos?

After a notice to quit expires, the landlord serves a 7-day notice of intention to apply to court to recover possession, before filing the claim.

Can I change the locks if my tenant refuses to leave?

No. Forcible ejection or threats to make a tenant leave is an offence under section 44 of the Lagos Tenancy Law, with a fine of up to ₦250,000 or up to six months in prison.
