Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian public holidays and payment timing

How Nigerian public holidays, including Islamic holidays declared at short notice, affect when payments settle, and how a UK business plans around them.

The short answer

Nigeria's public holidays are set by the Public Holidays Act, with the Islamic holidays fixed each year by ministerial declaration and extra days added by notice, so some dates are confirmed only shortly before. Instant transfers on the NIP system run around the clock, but batch payments, branch services and anything needing staff action move to the next working day. Pay salaries and suppliers at least one working day before a holiday, and check the UK bank holiday calendar too.

A UK business that pays Nigerian staff or suppliers learns the holiday calendar the hard way: a supplier payment that left London on Thursday arrives after a long Nigerian weekend, or payroll lands in the middle of Sallah celebrations a day late. Planning around holidays starts with knowing which dates are fixed, which are declared, and which payment channels keep running.

How Nigerian public holidays are set

The Public Holidays Act, in the 2004 Laws of the Federation print published by PLAC, lists in its Schedule: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Workers' Day (1 May), Democracy Day, National Day (1 October), Christmas Day, and days the Minister declares for Id el Fitr, Id el Kabir and Id el Maulud. The print shows Democracy Day as 29 May; the list in force can differ from the print, so rely on the current government notice for each year. Three other rules in the Act matter for planning:

Special days (s.2)
The President can appoint a special public holiday nationally, and a State Governor can do so for a state. Holidays include part days and work-free days.
No compulsion (s.3)
No one can be compelled to do on a public holiday anything they could not be compelled to do on a Sunday.
Weekends (s.5)
If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the print says no other day replaces it; if two fall on a Sunday and Monday, only the Monday is kept. In practice the government may still declare an extra day under its section 2 power.

The Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, so they move about 11 days earlier each year and are confirmed close to the date. For each year's announced dates, see the Nigeria library's 2026 list and 2027 list, and treat any Eid date as provisional until the Federal Government announces it.

Which payments keep moving on a holiday

ChannelOn a Nigerian public holiday
NIP instant transfers between Nigerian accountsNIBSS describes NIP as real-time, account-number-based transfers; Verto's overview describes it as running 24/7. Money normally arrives the same day.
NEFT batch paymentsVerto describes NEFT as settling within one working day with a 2pm cut-off; holiday treatment is not stated, so expect the next working day.
RTGSVerto describes same-day settlement before 12pm on working days; plan as if it does not run on holidays.
Branch, cheque and manual bank processesPlan for no processing until the next working day.
Inbound international payments needing a bank to actCan wait for the next working day in Nigeria, and in the UK if a UK bank holiday is involved.

Check your own bank's or provider's holiday schedule; these are general descriptions, not service promises.

People, not just systems

Even when a payment rail runs, the people around it may not. Section 3 of the Act says no one can be compelled to do on a public holiday anything they could not be compelled to do on a Sunday, so your Lagos finance officer is entitled not to work that day. Suppliers' accounts teams close, and banks' customer service lines are thinner if a payment needs tracing. Treat a public holiday as a day on which nothing that needs a person will happen, in either country, and plan approvals, supplier confirmations and payroll checks for the working day before.

The end-of-year squeeze

The two calendars collide in late December. GOV.UK lists UK bank holidays in England and Wales on Friday 25 December 2026, Monday 28 December 2026 (the Boxing Day substitute) and Friday 1 January 2027. Christmas Day and New Year's Day are also Nigerian public holidays. A UK-funded payment that needs a UK bank on 28 December may not move until the 29th.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example: December payroll for six Lagos staff is due on Thursday 24 December 2026. If the company converts pounds to naira on Wednesday 23 December and pays by NIP the same day, staff are paid before Christmas. If approval slips to the 24th and the UK conversion is not processed that afternoon, the next UK working day is Tuesday 29 December, and staff wait five days. Building a one-working-day buffer before the holiday removes the risk.

Planning steps

  1. At the start of each year, put both countries' public holidays in one calendar, marking Islamic holidays as provisional.
  2. Move any payday that falls on or just after a holiday to the previous working day.
  3. Fund naira balances a working day before a holiday period, so the payment itself can go by NIP.
  4. Ask suppliers to invoice early in holiday months and agree that payment dates move to the prior working day.
  5. Remember pension remittance timing runs in working days, so holidays extend it.
  6. Watch for state-level holidays declared by Governors where your staff or suppliers are based.

For the time-zone side of the same calendar, see BST and WAT across clock changes.

Where Pryme fits

Holding naira ahead of time is the simplest buffer. A Pryme Business Account keeps naira alongside pounds, so you can convert with Swap when it suits you, with the rate and fee shown before you approve, and pay staff from the naira balance through payroll or bulk payouts when the day comes.

Questions people ask

Do bank transfers work on public holidays in Nigeria?

NIP instant transfers between Nigerian accounts are described as running 24/7. Batch payments, branch services and manual processes usually wait for the next working day.

How are Eid holidays decided in Nigeria?

The Public Holidays Act lets the Minister declare the days for Id el Fitr, Id el Kabir and Id el Maulud, so the dates are confirmed shortly before. Treat them as provisional.

If a Nigerian holiday falls on a weekend, is Monday off?

The 2004 print of the Act says weekend holidays are not replaced, but the President can declare a special day, so check the government announcement each time.

When should I pay Nigerian staff in December?

Before 25 December, with a working day's buffer, because UK and Nigerian holidays overlap and UK processing can pause until 29 December 2026.
