Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

NSITF and ITF contributions for staff in Nigeria

Two employer-paid levies on Nigerian payroll. NSITF takes 1% of monthly payroll; the ITF takes 1% of annual payroll once you have five staff.

The short answer

Employers in Nigeria pay two contributions on top of salaries. The NSITF Employees' Compensation Scheme takes 1% of total monthly payroll from every registered employer, and the Industrial Training Fund takes 1% of annual payroll from employers with five or more employees, or fewer than five with turnover of ₦50 million or more. Neither is deducted from staff pay; both are employer costs to budget for from the first hire.

UK owners setting up a Lagos team usually budget for salary, PAYE and pension. Two further items are easy to miss because they never appear on a payslip: the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) contribution and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) levy. Each comes with a certificate that other agencies and clients ask to see.

NSITF: employees' compensation

NSITF runs the Employees' Compensation Scheme under the Employees' Compensation Act 2010. Its services page says every registered employer contributes 1% of total monthly payroll, through its Employer Self-Service Portal at ecsonline.nsitf.gov.ng. The National Industrial Court confirmed that minimum in a case reported in May 2025, ordering an employer to compute and pay 1% of total monthly payroll back to July 2011.

  • Who is covered. NSITF's compensation page says the scheme covers public and private employees, including contract, casual and outsourced staff and apprentices, from day one.
  • What it pays. Benefits for work injuries and occupational disease; the page gives 90% of monthly remuneration for permanent total disability.
  • Why it matters to you. NSITF says a registered, contributing employer is protected from civil suits over injuries the scheme covers.
  • Fees. The services page mentions a one-time onboarding fee and a payable certificate of compliance but does not show amounts; check on the portal.

If a staff member is injured at work, the employer files a Notification of Accident form (ECS CCF01) with medical reports, per NSITF's compensation page. Keep the form with your HR records.

ITF: the training levy

The ITF levy applies under the Industrial Training Fund Act as amended in 2011. A Mondaq note by TNP (February 2020) says it covers employers with five or more employees, or fewer than five with annual turnover of ₦50 million or more, at 1% of annual payroll. The Federal High Court held the levy to be a contribution, not a tax. The note also says ITF can raise a best-of-judgment assessment where payroll is not declared.

  • Registration and payment. LawCare Nigeria's 2019 guide describes registering at an ITF Area Office, paying through the ITF portal or Remita, and payment not later than 1 April of the following year, leading to a compliance certificate.
  • Certificate uses. The same guide says the compliance certificate is needed for things such as expatriate quota applications, customs matters and contracts.
  • Refunds. ThisDay reported in 2019 that ITF reimburses up to 50% of the contribution to employers that paid in full and met training conditions, such as training staff and accepting SIWES students.

These are dated secondary sources; confirm current procedures and dates with ITF before you rely on them.

What happens if you do not pay

NSITF's services page does not state a payment deadline or penalty, but the 2025 court decision shows the exposure: the employer was ordered to work out and pay contributions going back to July 2011. Arrears grow quietly, and an injury claim is the moment they surface. For ITF, LawCare's 2019 guide lists penalties for false returns of ₦500,000 for a first offence and ₦1,000,000 for later ones, with separate penalties for officers. Treat both as costs from the first payroll rather than something to regularise later.

Proof clients and partners ask for

Nigerian corporate clients, government buyers and immigration processes often want to see compliance certificates before they sign or approve. If your Lagos subsidiary bids for contracts, or plans to bring in UK staff on an expatriate quota, keep the NSITF and ITF certificates current and in the same folder as your tax clearance.

Worked example

Example only. A UK-owned Lagos subsidiary has six staff with total monthly payroll of ₦4,000,000.

ItemCalculationAmount (example)
NSITF each month1% × ₦4,000,000₦40,000
NSITF for the year₦40,000 × 12₦480,000
ITF for the year (6 staff, so in scope)1% × (₦4,000,000 × 12)₦480,000
Total employer cost for both₦480,000 + ₦480,000₦960,000

Check: ₦4,000,000 × 12 = ₦48,000,000 annual payroll; 1% = ₦480,000. With four staff and turnover under ₦50 million, ITF would not apply on the Mondaq description, but NSITF still would.

Steps for a new employer

  1. Register on the NSITF portal when you make your first hire, and start monthly contributions.
  2. Decide whether you are in ITF scope (staff count, turnover) and register at the ITF Area Office if so.
  3. Add both to the payroll calendar used in your monthly close.
  4. Keep certificates current; clients and agencies ask for them.
  5. Record training to support any ITF refund claim.

For the other payroll items, see pension contributions for Nigerian staff and NHF, NSITF and ITF explained.

Where Pryme fits

Monthly NSITF and annual ITF payments are easy to forget when payroll is run from the UK. The Finance agent in a Pryme Business Account can prepare those payments on schedule for a person to approve (Finance agent), alongside staff pay through payroll. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank.

Questions people ask

How much is NSITF contribution in Nigeria?

1% of total monthly payroll from every registered employer, per NSITF's services page.

Who pays the ITF levy?

Employers with five or more staff, or fewer than five with annual turnover of ₦50 million or more, at 1% of annual payroll, per a 2020 Mondaq note on the 2011 amendment.

Is NSITF deducted from staff salaries?

No. It is an employer contribution based on payroll.

Does NSITF cover contract and casual staff?

NSITF says the scheme covers contract, casual and outsourced staff and apprentices from day one.
