Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian lawyers in Canada: NCA assessment costs

What the National Committee on Accreditation charges a Nigerian-trained lawyer, from the $400 assessment to $500 per exam, and how long each stage takes.

The short answer

The National Committee on Accreditation charges $400 to assess a foreign-trained lawyer's education and experience and $500 for each NCA exam it assigns, plus taxes; it puts the minimum cost of the NCA route at about $3,000 plus taxes. The assessment takes six to eight weeks, the exams run twelve times a year, and you have five years from your assessment result to complete what you are assigned.

What the NCA does

The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) assesses the legal education and professional experience of people trained outside Canada, including holders of a Nigerian LLB and those called to the Nigerian Bar. It then tells you which subjects you must still show competence in, through NCA exams or Canadian law school courses. When you have met those requirements, the NCA issues a Certificate of Qualification, which you take to a provincial law society to start its own licensing process.

The NCA is a step before the law society, not a licence to practise. The law society's licensing process, with its own exams and experiential training, comes afterwards and has its own fees.

The NCA's fees

These figures are from the NCA's Costs and timelines page (last modified 20 February 2025, read in October 2026). All amounts are in Canadian dollars and taxes are added.

FeeAmount
Assessment of education and experience (since 1 March 2024)$400
Each NCA exam$500
Exam cancellation (per exam)$100
Exam appeal (per exam)$250
Assessment appeal$285

The NCA puts the minimum cost of completing its process at about $3,000 plus taxes. If you choose, or are required, to take courses at a Canadian law school, it estimates application fees of about $150, tuition of $35,000 to $56,000, and a minimum of $35,450 for a full year's enrolment. The page links to a separate refund policy; read it before you cancel anything.

A worked example

Example only. Tunde, called to the Nigerian Bar, is assessed and assigned five subjects, all of which he decides to write as NCA exams.

  • Assessment: $400
  • Five exams: 5 x $500 = $2,500
  • Subtotal: $2,900, plus taxes
  • One failed exam rewritten: a further $500, making $3,400 plus taxes

Tunde's number of subjects is an assumption for the example. Your assessment result sets the real list.

How long each stage takes

The same NCA page gives these timings:

  • Gathering documents: two to six weeks, and much longer if your degree is more than ten years old or was earned in a country where administration is slow. For many Nigerian applicants, the university transcript is the slowest piece; see sending a Nigerian transcript to Canada.
  • Assessment: six to eight weeks.
  • Completing your assignments: ten months at best, about two years on average.
  • Overall limit: five years from the date of your assessment result. The NCA stresses this does not mean the process takes five years.
  • Exams: offered twelve times a year, with registration opening six to eight weeks before the exam dates.
  • Results: ten to twelve weeks after the last exam in a session. You cannot register for a retake until you have the result of your last attempt.
  • Appeals: within two weeks of the exam material being made available for review; decisions in two to four weeks.
  • Certificate of Qualification: the NCA notifies the law society within up to ten business days; a hard copy is mailed in three to six weeks.

Exams or law school courses

You can usually meet assigned subjects either by writing NCA exams or by taking courses at a Canadian law school. On the NCA's own figures the difference in cost is large:

RouteCost on the NCA pageTiming
NCA exams$500 per exam plus taxesTwelve sittings a year; results 10 to 12 weeks after the session
Canadian law schoolAbout $150 to apply; tuition $35,000 to $56,000; minimum $35,450 for a full yearSet by each school's application deadlines, term dates and when it sends marks to the NCA

Law school brings teaching, networks and sometimes a degree, which some applicants value for job hunting. Exams let you keep working full time. Neither route skips the law society stage.

Planning the money and the time

Because results take ten to twelve weeks and you cannot book a retake before you have them, a failed exam can cost a season, not just $500. Many applicants spread exams so that they can keep working. The NCA's own figures suggest budgeting for the assessment and all assigned exams, plus a margin for one or two rewrites, rather than the bare minimum.

The NCA's site also describes a modernised assessment framework. If you are applying now, read the current assessment process pages, since the framework may affect what is assigned to you.

What to check first

  1. That your Nigerian university can send an official transcript, and how long it says it takes.
  2. Your certificate of call to the Nigerian Bar and any evidence of practice the NCA asks for.
  3. The NCA's current fee page and refund policy on the day you pay.
  4. Which province you plan to be licensed in, and that law society's own licensing costs.
  5. How long you can study while working, given the five-year limit.

Where Pryme fits

Nigerian universities and the Nigerian Bar charge in naira for transcripts and certified copies. A Pryme account holds NGN alongside USD, GBP and EUR, and Send pays a Nigerian account directly; any conversion through Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve. For a broader view of costs on arrival, see building a Canadian credit score from zero.

Questions people ask

How much does the NCA assessment cost?

$400 plus taxes, on the NCA's costs page (fee effective 1 March 2024).

How much is each NCA exam?

$500 plus taxes per exam. Cancelling costs $100 per exam and an exam appeal $250.

How long does NCA take for a Nigerian lawyer?

The NCA says assessment takes six to eight weeks and completing assignments ten months at best, about two years on average, within a five-year limit.

Does the NCA certificate let me practise law in Canada?

No. The Certificate of Qualification lets you begin a provincial law society's licensing process, which has its own requirements and fees.
