Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian bank wants a US visa or residence permit on file

Why Nigerian banks ask diaspora customers for a US visa, green card or other status document, what to send, how to certify it and how to send it safely.

The short answer

Nigerian banks ask for a US visa, green card or similar document because their due-diligence rules require them to know where a customer lives and to keep that information current; for a customer abroad, the status document supports the foreign address on file and the account's diaspora classification. Send what the bank's own form lists, usually the document plus your passport data page and a recent US proof of address, certified the way the bank specifies, through its official channels only.

An email arrives from your bank in Lagos: "Kindly update your records with a copy of your valid residence permit." You have banked there for fifteen years. Why does it suddenly want your US immigration papers, and is it safe to send them? The request is usually routine, and you can comply without handing over more than you need to.

Why the bank is asking

Nigerian banks work under the CBN's Customer Due Diligence Regulations 2023, which require them to identify customers, verify the information and keep it up to date; the regulations also carry penalties for banks that fall short (Templars summary of the CBN CDD Regulations 2023). For a customer who lives abroad, the bank has to be able to show where you live and on what basis. A US visa, green card or other status document does that alongside your passport.

The diaspora products make the link explicit. Fidelity Bank's diaspora banking page asks for a notarised or certified ID and a proof of address dated within the last 3 months. UBA lists ID, proof of address and source of funds for its diaspora account. GTBank's non-resident BVN route, which is only for Nigerians living abroad, takes ID, biodata and further KYC documents through nrbvn.com. A bank that opened your account while you lived in Nigeria may now be reclassifying it, or simply refreshing an expired record. The NRBVN itself is explained in NRBVN: the BVN for Nigerians abroad.

Is it about US tax reporting?

Not necessarily. Nigeria did not appear on the US Treasury's published list of FATCA intergovernmental agreements when we checked in October 2026. A bank may still ask whether you are a US citizen or tax resident as part of its own checks, but the residence-document request is primarily about due diligence on where you live.

What to provide

Your statusDocument that usually answers the requestSend with it
Visitor, student or work visaThe visa page in your passport, and your I-94 record if askedPassport data page; US proof of address
Green card holderBoth sides of the Permanent Resident CardNigerian passport data page; US proof of address
US citizen (dual national)US passport data page or naturalisation certificate, if the bank asksNigerian passport data page; US proof of address
Status pending (for example, renewal filed)Your current document plus the USCIS receipt noticeA short note explaining the pending application

For proof of address, a recent utility bill or US bank statement in your name is the usual answer; Fidelity specifies within 3 months. If the bank asks for certification, use one of the routes it accepts. Fidelity lists a notary, a court or lawyer, a Nigerian embassy, a foreign banker or a Commissioner for Oaths. Ask before you pay a notary, because some banks accept a scanned copy for a simple record update.

When the names do not match

If the name on your US document differs from the one on the bank record, for example after marriage or because a middle name was dropped at the US port of entry, raise it before you upload anything. Ask the bank what evidence links the two names; a marriage certificate or a sworn affidavit is a common request. Fixing the mismatch now also avoids trouble later with your BVN record, which must match the account.

Sending it safely

  • Reply only through the bank's official email domain, app or internet banking upload, or at a branch. If the request came by text or a personal messaging app, call the bank's published number to confirm it first.
  • Send what the form lists and no more. A record update rarely needs your Social Security number or full immigration file.
  • Never send PINs, passwords or one-time codes with documents; no genuine update needs them.
  • Keep a copy of what you sent and the date, and ask for a reference.

What happens if you ignore it

Banks can restrict accounts whose records are incomplete or out of date. In practice that often means transfers or card use stop until the update is done, which is far harder to fix from overseas than a document upload now. If your account is already blocked, our guide on why a Nigerian bank refuses to send dollars covers the other causes. If you are adding a green card specifically, see updating KYC with a US green card.

What to check first

  1. Confirm the request is genuine by calling the bank on its published number.
  2. Ask exactly which documents it needs and whether certification is required.
  3. Check your passport and US document are both in date.
  4. Use the bank's upload channel and keep the reference.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country, and hold NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one account. Security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN. See open an account. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Why is my Nigerian bank asking for my US visa?

Due-diligence rules require banks to verify and keep current where customers live. For a customer abroad, a status document supports the foreign address on file.

Is it safe to send my green card copy to my Nigerian bank?

Yes, through the bank's official channels. Confirm the request by phone first, send only what is listed, and never include PINs or codes.

What if my US visa has expired but I have a pending application?

Send the current document with the USCIS receipt notice and a short explanation, and ask the bank whether that satisfies its record update.

Do Nigerian banks report to the IRS?

Nigeria did not appear on the US Treasury's FATCA agreement list in October 2026. Banks may still ask about US citizenship in their own checks.
