Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

2026Agentic operations

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Does Nigeria tax my Italian salary?

Nigeria taxes residents on worldwide income. The residence tests under the 2025 tax law, and when a worker based in Italy falls outside them.

The short answer

Only if you are still Nigerian tax resident. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 an individual is resident if any one test is met: domicile in Nigeria, a permanent home available there, a habitual abode, at least 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, substantial economic or immediate family ties, or service as a Nigerian diplomat. If none applies, you are non-resident and Nigeria taxes only Nigerian-source income, so a salary for work done in Italy is outside it.

The short version

Nigeria taxes its residents on income from anywhere, whether or not the money is brought home. It taxes non-residents only on income that arises in Nigeria. A salary paid by an Italian employer for work you do in Italy is foreign income, so the whole question is whether Nigeria still treats you as resident. Since 1 January 2026, that test is wider than many people expect.

The residence tests under the 2025 law

PwC's Nigeria summary (reviewed May 2026) lists the tests. Meeting any one of them makes an individual resident:

  1. domicile in Nigeria;
  2. a permanent home available in Nigeria for your domestic use;
  3. Nigeria is your place of habitual abode;
  4. you are in Nigeria for 183 days or more in any 12-month period, counting temporary absences;
  5. you have substantial economic ties or immediate family ties in Nigeria;
  6. you serve as a Nigerian diplomat abroad.

Mondaq's September 2026 analysis puts it the other way round, citing section 201 of the Act: you are non-resident only if all of these are absent. The NiDCOM diaspora guide (January 2026) describes the test more briefly as 183 days or economic ties, and at one point says that fewer than 183 days means you are not resident. That shortcut is too simple. The day count is one test among several.

Where Italy-based workers can be caught

Most Nigerians working in Italy spend far less than 183 days a year in Nigeria. The risk lies in the other tests.

SituationWhy it matters
You own or rent a house in Lagos kept ready for youMay be "a permanent home available for your domestic use"
Your spouse and children still live in NigeriaMay amount to "immediate family ties"
You run a business or hold large assets in NigeriaMay be "substantial economic ties"
You moved to Italy on a short contract and plan to returnDomicile may still be Nigerian
House let to a tenant, family settled with you in ItalyThese tests are less likely to be met, but check each one

None of these phrases is defined in the sources above, and we have not found NRS guidance applying them to diaspora workers. Treat a Lagos home or a family at home as a reason to take advice, not as an automatic answer.

If you are non-resident

Then Nigeria taxes only income that arises in Nigeria. The NiDCOM guide says services physically performed outside Nigeria are not taxable unless you are tax resident, that foreign pensions are not taxed, and that people with no Nigerian income need not file. Mondaq adds that non-residents with only passive Nigerian income, such as dividends, generally pay through withholding, while those with other Nigerian income should register with the NRS and file by 31 March of the following year. Your Italian salary does not appear on any Nigerian return.

PwC notes one wrinkle for employment: income counts as Nigerian where the employee is resident and the duties are performed wholly or partly in Nigeria. If you are non-resident and do all the work in Italy, that rule does not reach you. If you work remotely from Lagos for weeks at a time, the answer may change.

If you are resident in both countries

It is possible to be resident in Italy under Italian rules (see when you become tax resident in Italy) and resident in Nigeria under one of the tests above. A full treaty would normally contain a tie-breaker to settle this. The Italy-Nigeria agreement listed in the FIRS circular of May 2022 covers air and shipping only, so no tie-breaker applies to salaries. In that case:

  • Italy taxes the salary at source through payroll, as its own law requires.
  • Nigeria would tax you on worldwide income, including that salary.
  • Nigeria gives a unilateral credit for foreign tax to its residents, according to the NiDCOM guide, which should reduce the Nigerian bill by the Italian tax paid.
  • The paperwork falls on you: filing a Nigerian return and proving the Italian tax with your CU (certificazione unica) and payslips.

The reverse case, Italian tax on Nigerian income, is in Italian tax on income from Nigeria.

What to check first

  1. Count your days in Nigeria in every rolling 12-month period, not just the calendar year.
  2. Write down whether you have a home available in Nigeria, and who lives there.
  3. List your Nigerian income and assets.
  4. If any test might apply, take advice before the 31 March filing date.
  5. Keep Italian payslips and your CU; they are your proof of Italian tax.

Where Pryme fits

If you send part of your salary home, a Pryme account holds euro and naira side by side, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve a conversion. Sending to family from the same account keeps one record. Moving money does not by itself change your tax residence; this is information, not advice.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax in Nigeria on my salary in Italy?

Only if you are Nigerian tax resident. If you meet none of the residence tests, Nigeria taxes only Nigerian-source income, and a salary for work done in Italy is not Nigerian-source.

Is it 183 days for Nigerian tax residence?

The 183-day test is one of several. A permanent home available in Nigeria, domicile, habitual abode, or substantial economic or family ties can each make you resident.

Does having my family in Nigeria make me tax resident?

It may. Immediate family ties are one of the tests in the 2025 law, but the term is not defined in the sources we checked, so take advice.

Is there a tax treaty between Italy and Nigeria for salaries?

No. The agreement covers air and shipping only, according to the FIRS circular of May 2022, so there is no treaty tie-breaker for employment income.
