Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Getting a Nigerian tax residence certificate for Italian use

If an Italian office or adviser wants proof of Nigerian tax, you may not need a residence certificate. What the NRS issues and what to collect instead.

The short answer

If you live in Italy, you are usually not Nigerian tax resident, so a Nigerian certificate of residence is rarely what Italy needs. For the Italian foreign tax credit you need proof of the Nigerian income and the tax definitively paid: withholding tax credit notes, your NRS return and assessment, and, where an office wants a formal document, a tax clearance certificate, which is applied for online with your tax ID and is valid for one year.

First, which document is being asked for?

Requests for "a Nigerian tax certificate" usually mean one of three different things, and they are not interchangeable.

DocumentWhat it provesWho normally needs it
Certificate of residenceThat a tax authority treats you as resident there, for treaty purposesSomeone resident in a country claiming treaty relief in another
Withholding tax credit note or receiptThat a payer deducted Nigerian tax on a given paymentAnyone claiming credit for Nigerian tax
Tax clearance certificate (TCC)That your Nigerian tax affairs are up to date for recent yearsGovernment contracts, some licences and formal checks

The certificate of residence is the one people ask for most and need least. A certificate of residence is a treaty tool: the FIRS circular of May 2022 shows Nigeria asking non-residents for a certificate "endorsed by the home tax authority" before it applies a treaty rate. An Italian resident would get such a certificate from the Agenzia delle Entrate, not from Nigeria. And the Italy-Nigeria agreement in that circular covers air and shipping only, so for most income there is no treaty rate to claim either way.

What Italy usually wants: proof of tax paid

The Italian credit under art. 165 TUIR depends on showing that Nigerian tax was paid on Nigerian income and is final. EC News (June 2023) stresses that the credit rests on proof of the foreign taxes paid, and courts that allowed late claims did so only on that proof. In practice, collect:

  1. Withholding tax credit notes from each payer: the tenant or agent for rent, the bank for interest, the registrar for dividends. Each should show your name, your Nigerian Tax ID, the gross amount, the tax and the period.
  2. Your Nigerian return and the NRS acknowledgement or assessment, if you filed.
  3. Receipts for any tax you paid directly.
  4. Bank statements showing the gross and net amounts.

Credit notes are only as good as the payer who issues them. Ask for them as each deduction happens rather than at year end; the Nigeria library's guide to getting withholding credit notes back covers chasing them.

Tax clearance certificate: when and how

A TCC confirms your tax position for recent years. Mondaq (March 2025) describes the federal process: apply online through the tax authority's TCC portal by logging in with your tax identification number; a successful online application is issued straight away, a manual one takes a few weeks, and the certificate is valid for one year from issue. That account predates the change of name from FIRS to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the move to the Rev360 platform, so check the current portal on the NRS website before applying.

Two open questions are worth knowing. We could not confirm how the NRS handles a TCC for a non-resident with little or no Nigerian income, or how a third party in Italy can verify one online. If an Italian office asks for a TCC, ask what it is meant to prove; credit notes may serve better.

Making Nigerian documents usable in Italy

Italian offices generally want foreign documents translated and, for formal uses, legalised. The Embassy of Italy in Abuja legalises documents already legalised by Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with an Italian translation, by appointment; Abuja covers documents from the FCT, Kaduna, Kano, Niger, Plateau and Katsina, and the Consulate General in Lagos the other states. For tax-credit evidence kept on file for the Agenzia delle Entrate, a plain translation may be enough until the office asks for more. See sworn translation of Nigerian documents and legalisation between Italy and Nigeria.

Common mistakes

  • Asking a Nigerian tax office for a "residence certificate" when you live in Italy: you are applying for the wrong document, and may be told you are non-resident, which is accurate but not useful.
  • Relying on a tenant's word that tax was withheld, without a credit note in your name.
  • Credit notes issued under an old TIN that no longer matches the Tax ID now linked to your NIN; ask payers to use the current one.
  • Waiting until the Italian filing deadline to gather Nigerian papers that can take weeks to obtain.
  • Converting the naira tax at one rate and the naira income at another.

Steps

  1. Ask the Italian office or adviser exactly what the document must prove.
  2. Make sure you have a Nigerian Tax ID (see getting a Nigerian tax ID from Italy).
  3. Collect credit notes and statements for every Nigerian income.
  4. Apply for a TCC only if a formal certificate is required.
  5. Translate, and legalise if asked, before the Italian deadline.

Where Pryme fits

Bank statements are part of the evidence. Statements from a Pryme account can be generated as verifiable documents with VerifyDoc.ai, which anyone can check are genuine and unaltered. They do not replace NRS documents; this is information, not tax advice.

Questions people ask

Can NRS give me a certificate of residence if I live in Italy?

If you live in Italy you are usually not Nigerian tax resident, so a Nigerian residence certificate is rarely the right document. For treaty purposes your country of residence issues it.

What proof of Nigerian tax does Italy accept for the foreign tax credit?

Documents showing the Nigerian income and the tax definitively paid, such as withholding credit notes, NRS returns and assessments, and bank statements.

How long is a Nigerian tax clearance certificate valid?

One year from issue, according to Mondaq's March 2025 description of the federal process.

Do I need to legalise Nigerian tax documents for Italy?

For formal uses, often yes, through Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the Italian Embassy in Abuja or Consulate in Lagos, with an Italian translation. Ask the office first.
