Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Buy MTN data from your bank app or bank USSD

Buying MTN data through *737#, *894#, *966# and other bank codes: what banks say about charges and daily limits, and when MTN's own code is better.

The short answer

Most Nigerian banks let you buy MTN data from your account through their USSD code or app: GTBank lists *737*4# (free on its codes table), FirstBank *894*2#, Keystone *7111*5# and Zenith *966*Amount*MobileNumber#. Banks set daily airtime and data limits (GTBank and Keystone state ₦10,000, Zenith ₦3,000), and you should check that the bundle size matches MTN's own price for the same plan.

Buying data from your bank account saves a trip for a recharge card and works even when your airtime is zero. It also means a transaction on your bank account, with the bank's limits, and sometimes a separate network charge for the USSD session. This guide sets out what the main banks' own pages say, and how to tell whether the bank route or MTN's route suits you.

Bank codes for MTN data, from the banks' own pages

BankData codeAirtime codeLimits and charges stated
GTBank (737)*737*4#*737*Amount# or *737*Amount*PhoneNo#Data and airtime listed as free on the 737 FAQ codes table; airtime/data daily recharge limit ₦10,000
FirstBank (894)*894*2# (self) or *894*2*Phone# (others)*894*Amount# or *894*Amount*Phone#No limits or charges stated on the page
Zenith (966)*966*Amount*MobileNumber# (airtime or data)Same codeAirtime ₦3,000 a day; 'free but network charges apply'
Keystone (7111)*7111*5#*7111*Amount# or *7111*Amount*Phone#Airtime ₦10,000 a day; no fees stated

The bank pages are undated, so the limits may have changed. Your bank's app or a confirmation screen shows the current limit and any charge.

How it works, step by step

  1. Dial from the phone number registered on your bank account. GTBank's 737 FAQ says no separate registration is needed for 737 from the registered number; FirstBank, Zenith and Keystone require a one-time USSD registration with a PIN.
  2. Choose the data option and the number to top up (your own or someone else's MTN number).
  3. Pick the bundle from the menu. Note its size and validity.
  4. Confirm with your USSD PIN. The data should arrive by SMS from MTN within moments; your bank sends a debit alert.

In a bank app, the steps are the same: Airtime and Data, select MTN, enter the number, choose the bundle and approve with your PIN.

When the bank route is cheaper, and when it is not

The bundle itself is MTN's product, so the price should match MTN's listed price for the same plan. What differs is the cost around it.

  • Cashback or discounts: some apps offer them. MoMo PSB, MTN's own payment service bank, states 2% cashback on own MTN data bought through MoMo; a bank's offer, if any, will be in its app.
  • USSD session charges: Zenith's page says network charges apply to USSD. A few naira per session adds little on a large bundle and more on a ₦100 daily plan.
  • Limits: a ₦3,000 daily cap rules out a large monthly plan through Zenith USSD; use the app or MTN's own channels for that.
  • Bundle range: bank menus sometimes show fewer bundles than MTN's *312*1# or *904# menus. If the plan you want is missing, buy it from MTN directly with airtime.

Worked example (illustrative)

You want a monthly plan priced at ₦3,500. Buying it through a bank USSD with a hypothetical ₦7 session charge costs ₦3,507. Buying it through an app that pays 2% cashback costs ₦3,500 and returns ₦70, so the effective price is ₦3,430. Buying ₦3,500 of airtime first and then the plan on *312*1# costs ₦3,500 plus any airtime fee your bank charges. The difference is small; the bundle range and your daily limit usually matter more.

What to check first

  • That you are dialling from the phone number linked to your bank account; USSD banking only works from that number.
  • The number you are topping up. A typo sends the bundle to a stranger, and reversing a successful data purchase is not something the bank can do on its own.
  • The bundle size and validity on the confirmation screen, not just the price.
  • Your remaining daily limit, if you have already bought airtime today.
  • Whether your bank charges for the USSD session; the debit alert will show it.

Buying for someone else is common, especially for parents and relatives. Ask them to confirm their MTN number by text before you buy, and save it as a beneficiary in your bank app so you do not retype it each month.

If you were debited but the data did not arrive

Check your data with *323*4# or by texting 2 to 323, as MTN's data help page lists. If nothing arrived after a few minutes, contact your bank first, because the debit sits with the bank; quote the transaction reference from your alert. If the bank shows the purchase as successful, MTN has the next step, through 300 or Zigi on WhatsApp. Our guide on bill payments that fail after a debit covers the reversal process.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account lets you buy MTN airtime and data in the app with your transaction PIN, alongside electricity and TV bills; see the airtime and data page. If you send money home, sending to Nigeria and paying the bundle directly can be simpler than asking someone to recharge. Related: checking your MTN data balance.

Questions people ask

What is the GTBank code to buy MTN data?

*737*4#, listed as free on GTBank's 737 codes table. The airtime and data daily limit stated on GTBank's page is ₦10,000.

How do I buy MTN data with my First Bank account?

Dial *894*2# for your own line or *894*2*PhoneNumber# for another line, after registering for 894 banking.

Is it cheaper to buy MTN data from my bank?

The bundle price should be MTN's own. The difference comes from bank limits, any network charge for the USSD session and any cashback your bank or app offers.

My bank debited me but no MTN data came, what do I do?

Check your balance with *323*4#, then contact your bank with the transaction reference. If the bank shows success, contact MTN on 300 or Zigi.
