Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

MMM-style schemes in US Nigerian communities: history and signs

How MMM Nigeria worked, why copies keep reaching Nigerian groups in the US, and the warning signs regulators list before you put in any money.

The short answer

MMM Nigeria launched in November 2015 promising 30% a month, froze members' accounts in December 2016 and asked people to put in new money to recover the old. Copies still circulate through WhatsApp groups, churches and alumni networks in the US. The tell-tale signs are the same every time: high, steady returns with little risk, recruitment rewards, no registration and trouble withdrawing.

What MMM Nigeria looked like

MMM Nigeria is the scheme most Nigerians in the US remember, and its timeline is a useful template. According to a 2017 history published by Legit.ng, the Nigerian site launched in November 2015 and promised participants 30% a month. Members "provided help" by sending money to other members and were later promised help back, plus the return. By late 2016 the press reported about 2.4 million sign-ups.

On 13 December 2016 MMM Nigeria froze accounts, citing the festive season, and said it would reactivate in the new year (Techzim, reporting that day). When it reopened in January 2017, members were told to add new money if they wanted to recover what was frozen. Press estimates of losses ran to about ₦18 billion; nobody published an audited figure. The SEC Nigeria later listed "MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (Online, 2016)" among illegal operators it had sealed up.

Nothing about the model was new. The US SEC describes a Ponzi scheme as investment fraud "that pays existing investors with funds collected from new investors". Once new money slows, withdrawals stop. MMM only changed the packaging, with "mavro" balances, community language and a countdown to your payout.

Why copies reach Nigerian communities in the US

Investor.gov calls this pattern affinity fraud. Promoters are, or pretend to be, members of the group. They enlist respected people such as a pastor, an association chair or a popular aunty, and victims often try to sort things out inside the group instead of reporting it. Diaspora networks fit that description closely: the trust is real, the groups are online and spread across several states, and many members want naira or dollar income for family at home.

We found no official US record of a scheme aimed only at Nigerians in America. What the record does show is the same model returning in Nigeria under new names. The SEC Nigeria's sealed-up list has 38 entries from 2013 to 2022. They include Women in Oil Ltd (Kaduna, 2013), Box Value Trading Company (2019), Darrol Investment Ltd (Ibadan, 2020), Oxford International Group (Lagos and Port Harcourt, 2022) and farm-produce schemes such as Ovaioza Farm Produce Storage Business (Abuja, 2022). In June 2025 the SEC issued a fresh warning when the CBEX platform resumed operations two months after it crashed (Nairametrics). Each of these could reach a US member through a forwarded link.

The signs, as they appear in a group chat

Red flag regulators listHow it often sounds in a diaspora group
High returns with little or no risk"Double your money in 30 days, it is safe, my cousin has been paid three times."
Overly consistent returnsScreenshots of the same percentage every week, whatever the market does.
Unregistered investments, unlicensed sellersNo SEC (US) or SEC Nigeria registration you can find; "registration is in progress".
Secretive or complex strategy"Forex robots", "crypto arbitrage" or "agro commodities" with no audited accounts.
Paperwork problemsNo contract, or a PDF with no company number or address.
Trouble receiving paymentsWithdrawal "windows", fees to release your balance, or pressure to roll over.
Rewards for recruitingHigher tiers or bonuses for bringing in new members.

The first six rows come from Investor.gov's Ponzi page. The recruitment row reflects the affinity-fraud warning and MMM's own referral bonuses. The FTC adds a crypto-specific rule: only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency upfront and guarantee returns, and many investment scams now start on social media or dating apps.

Checks before you send a dollar

  1. Search the seller and the product on Investor.gov and, for anything Nigerian, on the SEC Nigeria "Find a registered operator" page. A capital-market operator must be registered before it operates.
  2. Read the SEC Nigeria "Known investment scams" list and its sealed-up schedule. A new name can still be an old operator.
  3. Ask for audited accounts and the legal entity's registration number, and confirm them yourself. Do not rely on a screenshot.
  4. Refuse anything that pays you to recruit, asks for crypto or gift cards, or tells you to keep quiet.
  5. Do not invest just because someone in your group recommends it. Investor.gov makes this point directly.

Reporting and what the law now says

In the US, report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also send a tip to the US SEC through Investor.gov. For a scheme run from Nigeria, the SEC Nigeria takes reports through its whistleblowing platform and at sec@sec.gov.ng. Nigeria's Investments and Securities Act 2025, signed on 29 March 2025, replaced the 2007 Act. The SEC Director-General said it lets the Commission prosecute Ponzi promoters, with penalties starting at 10 years in prison and a ₦20 million fine, plus disgorgement (ICIR, 1 April 2025). Getting money back after a collapse is rare, so checking before you pay matters most. The Nigeria-side guide Ponzi and investment scams in Nigeria covers local reporting in more detail, and our warning-signs guide for US readers and gold scheme checks go further on specific pitches.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not run investment schemes and does not promise returns. If you send money home, Send shows the rate and the fee before you approve, so you know exactly what left your account. Security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN, which helps when someone in a chat pushes you to "pay now".

Questions people ask

Was MMM Nigeria a Ponzi scheme?

It paid earlier members with money from newer ones, which is how the US SEC defines a Ponzi scheme. It froze accounts in December 2016, and the SEC Nigeria lists it among illegal operators it sealed up.

How do I know if an investment in my WhatsApp group is a scam?

Watch for steady high returns, recruitment bonuses, no registration you can verify, and delays or fees when you try to withdraw. Check the operator on Investor.gov and on the SEC Nigeria registered operator page.

Where do I report a Nigerian Ponzi scheme from the US?

Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the US SEC through Investor.gov. If it runs from Nigeria, also use the SEC Nigeria whistleblowing platform or email sec@sec.gov.ng.

Can I get my money back from a collapsed scheme?

Recovery is uncommon and slow. Keep every record and report quickly. Under Nigeria's ISA 2025 the SEC can seek disgorgement from promoters, but no outcome is guaranteed.
