Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Everyday money

Locked savings in Nigeria: do they stop you spending?

Locking money away can stop impulse spending, but a lock in the wrong place can trap you. When locked savings help, when they hurt and how to set one well.

The short answer

Locked savings help most people stop raiding money meant for a goal, because the friction of not being able to withdraw protects the plan. They work best for goals with a fixed date, such as rent or school fees, as long as the lock ends before the money is due; they are a poor home for an emergency fund.

Why locking money works

Most savings plans fail not because people never save but because they withdraw. Money that can be moved in seconds competes with every small temptation and every request from family or friends. A lock adds friction. When you cannot reach the money until a set date, the decision to save is made once, on a calm day, rather than over and over on difficult ones.

Locks also make it easier to say no. Telling a relative or a friend that the money is fixed until March is simpler than explaining why you will not spend money that is plainly sitting in your account.

When locked savings help, and when they hurt

SituationLocked savings?Why
Rent due on a known dateYesFixed date, large sum, high temptation
School fees for next termYesFixed date; lock until just before resumption
December and festive spendingYesStops mid-year raids
Car, laptop or other planned purchaseUsuallyLock until the planned buy date
Emergency fundNo, at least not the first layerYou cannot choose when an emergency happens
Money you may need for business stockNoTrading needs flexibility
Long-term goals, such as land or university feesYes, in stagesSeveral shorter locks keep some flexibility

What breaking a lock usually costs

Providers handle early withdrawal differently. Some do not allow it at all until maturity. Others allow it but take back some or all of the interest earned, or charge a fee. Before you lock anything, find out:

  • Whether early withdrawal is possible at all.
  • What you lose if you break the lock: interest, a fee, or both.
  • Whether you can withdraw part of the money or only all of it.
  • When the money reaches your main account on the maturity date, and whether it rolls over by default.

Read the terms in the app or on the agreement, not only the advert. Our guide to fixed deposit vs savings account compares the two structures in more detail.

How to set a lock well

  1. Set the end date before the money is due, not on the day. If rent is due on 1 March, let the lock end in mid-February.
  2. Lock only money you are sure you will not need. Keep your emergency fund flexible and separate.
  3. Use several smaller locks rather than one big one for long goals. If you need some money early, you only break one.
  4. Name each lock after its goal so you remember why it exists.
  5. Check what happens at maturity, so the money does not sit idle or roll into a new lock you did not intend.

Worked example: laddering a long goal

An example saver putting aside ₦1,500,000 over a year for land fees and legal costs, using three locks rather than one.

Lock (example)AmountMatures
Lock 1₦500,000Month 4
Lock 2₦500,000Month 8
Lock 3₦500,000Month 12

If a genuine need appears in month six, the saver can use lock one, which has already matured, without breaking the others. When each lock matures, they can roll it into a new lock for the next stage of the goal.

If you must break a lock

Sometimes life overrides the plan. If you have to break a lock early, take only what you need if partial withdrawals are allowed, use the money for the real need rather than letting it drift into spending, and set a date to rebuild the goal. Then ask why the lock broke. If it was a true emergency, your emergency fund may be too small. If it was a planned cost you forgot, your budget needs a new line. Either way, the answer is to adjust the system, not to give up on locking money.

The risks people overlook

  • Locking money with an unlicensed platform. A lock is only as safe as the institution holding it. Check the CBN licence first; see how to check a CBN licence.
  • Chasing high advertised returns. Very high promised returns on locked money are a common feature of fraud; read our guide to investment scams.
  • Ignoring inflation. NBS figures put headline inflation at 14.63% in September 2026. A lock that earns little still loses value while it waits, so long locks need a return worth having.
  • Forgetting deposit insurance limits. The NDIC raised its cover in 2024 to ₦2 million per depositor at microfinance banks and ₦5 million at commercial banks.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Savings Boxes include a Fixed Box, which locks naira until the date you choose, and a Flexible Box, which you can withdraw from. You can run several Boxes at once, so a ladder of Fixed Boxes and a Flexible emergency Box can sit side by side. Rates and terms are shown in the app before you commit. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit.

Questions people ask

Is locked savings a good idea in Nigeria?

For goals with a fixed date, yes, as long as the lock ends before the money is due and the provider is licensed. Keep your emergency fund out of it.

Can I withdraw from fixed savings before the date?

It depends on the provider. Some do not allow it; others allow it but take back interest or charge a fee. Check before you lock.

How do I stop spending my savings?

Lock money for fixed-date goals, keep savings in separate named pots away from your spending account, and move money on payday.

What is the safest locked savings platform?

One held by a CBN-licensed institution with NDIC cover, with terms you can read in full before you commit. Very high promised returns are a warning sign.
