Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Naming a beneficiary in Nigeria on a Canadian life policy

You can name relatives in Nigeria on a Canadian life policy. How designations work, the minor and estate rules, and what makes a foreign claim smooth.

The short answer

You can name a person in Nigeria as beneficiary on a Canadian life insurance policy: the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says you can name a spouse, family member, friend or charity, and more than one in set shares. Insurers set their own claim procedures for beneficiaries abroad, so ask yours in writing how it pays a beneficiary in Nigeria and what documents it will need, and give it full, passport-matching details now.

What Canadian rules say about beneficiaries

The FCAC's life insurance page (modified 16 October 2025) sets out the basics:

  • You can name your spouse, another family member, a friend or a charity, and you can name more than one, with different shares.
  • You should name a beneficiary on each policy, and consider a contingent beneficiary who receives the money if the first has died.
  • A revocable beneficiary can be changed at any time without telling them. An irrevocable beneficiary must consent in writing to any change.
  • In Quebec, a married spouse named as beneficiary is presumed irrevocable unless you specify otherwise.
  • The death benefit is described as a one-time, tax-free payment.

Nothing on the page limits beneficiaries to people living in Canada. Whether and how a particular insurer pays abroad is a matter of its own procedures.

If you hold group life cover through your employer as well as a personal policy, each has its own beneficiary form. Check both; the group plan's designation is often filled in quickly on the first day of a job and never revisited, and may still name someone who no longer fits your wishes.

Children and the estate

Two FCAC points matter a great deal to Nigerian families:

Minor beneficiaries
If a beneficiary is under the age of majority, you may want to set up a trust and name a trustee to hold the money. Without one, the province or territory holds it until the child comes of age.
No beneficiary
If none is named, the insurer treats your estate as the beneficiary. The money then follows your will, is subject to estate costs, and may be claimed by creditors.

Naming young children in Nigeria directly, without a trustee, can leave the money locked with a provincial office for years. Many parents name a trustee they trust, sometimes a sibling in Canada, to manage it for the children. Discuss the structure with a lawyer, and see an Ontario will with property in Nigeria.

Making a foreign claim work

Delays in cross-border claims usually come from mismatched names and missing documents. Steps to take now:

  1. Write each beneficiary's full legal name exactly as on their Nigerian passport or NIN record, with date of birth and relationship.
  2. Give the insurer current contact details, and update them when they change.
  3. Tell the beneficiaries the policy exists, the insurer's name and the policy number, kept somewhere safe.
  4. Ask the insurer in writing: Does it pay beneficiaries outside Canada? In what currency? By wire or cheque? What identity and death documents will it require, and must they be notarised or authenticated?
  5. If you might die in Nigeria, ask what it needs from Nigerian authorities. Death registration there is handled by the National Population Commission, which now has an online notification service, as Legit.ng reported in August 2026.

How the money arrives in Nigeria

A payout sent through an international money transfer operator is paid out in naira: a March 2026 Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie update on a CBN circular says licensed operators pay recipients only in naira. A bank wire to a domiciliary account is a different channel. Ask the insurer which it uses, and have the beneficiary ready with an account in their own name.

A labelled example

Example only. Tunde in Winnipeg has a CAD 500,000 term policy. He names his wife in Canada for 60 per cent, and a trust for his two children for 40 per cent, with his brother in Lagos as trustee. He names his mother in Ibadan as contingent beneficiary. If his wife died before him, her share would go to the next named beneficiary under the policy terms, not to his estate. Shares: CAD 300,000 to his wife and CAD 200,000 to the trust.

Keeping it up to date

The FCAC recommends reviewing beneficiary designations from time to time. Life events that should trigger a review include marriage, separation, a new child, the death of a named beneficiary, and a move by a beneficiary to another country. Remember that a revocable change is made with the insurer, on its form; a note in your will does not always change the policy designation, so ask the insurer how designations and wills interact in your province. Keep a copy of the insurer's confirmation each time.

For buying cover in the first place, see life insurance for new immigrants in Canada.

Where Pryme fits

A beneficiary in Nigeria with a Pryme Personal account can receive naira and also hold USD, and convert with Swap when they choose, seeing the rate and fee first. Keep the policy number and insurer details with your other records, and see estate steps for Nigerian assets. This is information, not insurance or legal advice.

Questions people ask

Can I name my mother in Nigeria as beneficiary on my Canadian life insurance?

Yes. The FCAC says you can name family members, and nothing on its page limits beneficiaries to Canada. Ask your insurer how it pays beneficiaries abroad.

Is a Canadian life insurance payout taxed?

The FCAC describes the death benefit as a one-time, tax-free payment, unless it goes to your estate. Nigerian rules for the recipient are separate.

What happens if my children in Nigeria are minors?

The FCAC suggests a trust and a named trustee. Otherwise the province or territory holds the money until they reach the age of majority.

What if I do not name a beneficiary?

The insurer treats your estate as the beneficiary, so the money follows your will and may be claimed by creditors.
