Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Is Umba legit in Nigeria? Licence and register status

Umba is on the FCCPC approved list as Umba Digital Solutions Limited. Its banking licence is Kenyan, so here is what that means for Nigerian users.

The short answer

Umba is on the FCCPC's list of approved digital lenders: the approval table we read in October 2026 lists Umba Digital Solutions Limited with the Umba mobile app and Umba web. Umba's website describes a banking licence from the Central Bank of Kenya, which does not apply in Nigeria, so treat Umba in Nigeria as an FCCPC-approved lender and ask which Nigerian licensed bank holds any account balance.

Umba markets itself as a digital bank, and in one country it is one. That is the source of the confusion for Nigerian users: the licence that makes Umba a bank is Kenyan, while in Nigeria the evidence we found is an FCCPC lending approval. This guide sets out both, what Umba offers, and the questions to ask before you borrow from it or leave money with it.

Umba's Nigerian register entry

The FCCPC's approvals page covers digital money lenders. In October 2026 Umba appeared in the main approval table:

ListCompany nameApps
ApprovalUmba Digital Solutions LimitedUmba Mobile App, Umba Web

That approval allows Umba Digital Solutions Limited to lend digitally to consumers in Nigeria under the FCCPC's rules. It was not in the FCCPC's waiver list, which is where the Commission places CBN-licensed banks and finance companies. We did not find a CBN licence for Umba during our check; if you see one claimed, ask for the licence type and the licensed entity's name. Our guide to checking the FCCPC register shows how to search it.

The Kenyan licence and why it does not carry over

When we opened umba.com in October 2026 it directed us to its Kenya page. That page says Umba is a digital bank licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya, with deposits insured by the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation, and its location menu lists Kenya and Nigeria. Its statistics panel says it operates in two countries.

In Kenya
Umba states it is a CBK-licensed digital bank with KDIC deposit insurance.
In Nigeria
We found an FCCPC digital lending approval for Umba Digital Solutions Limited. Banking licences are national, so the Kenyan licence and Kenyan deposit insurance do not cover a Nigerian account.

We could not load a Nigeria-specific Umba page in October 2026, so we have not described the products, rates or fees Umba offers to Nigerian users. Check them in the app.

Loans plus an account: what to ask

Umba is known for combining a spending account with credit. If the Nigerian app offers you an account balance, savings or a card as well as loans, the money must be held by a licensed institution in Nigeria. Before you leave money in the app, ask:

  1. Which CBN-licensed bank or microfinance bank holds the Naira balance?
  2. Is that balance covered by the NDIC, and through which institution?
  3. Which company is the lender on your loan agreement: Umba Digital Solutions Limited or a partner?
  4. How do you withdraw, and how long does it take?

If Umba cannot answer these clearly, use it for borrowing only and keep your savings elsewhere.

Working out the cost of an Umba loan

Labelled example only, not an Umba price: ₦80,000 over two months at an example 8% a month flat costs ₦6,400 a month, or ₦12,800 in total, so you repay ₦92,800. Ask whether any fee is deducted from the amount you receive; if ₦2,000 is taken upfront, you receive ₦78,000 but still repay ₦92,800, so the true cost is ₦14,800 on ₦78,000. Compare totals across lenders, and read our overdraft versus loan app guide for cheaper options.

Data and app permissions

Digital lenders assess you partly through the data your phone and bank accounts provide. The FCCPC's rules limit how lenders may use that data, in particular your contacts, and forbid using it to shame you during recovery. When you install Umba or any lending app, read the permission requests one by one. Access to your contacts, photos or call log is rarely needed to make a lending decision; you can refuse permissions that are not essential, and the app should explain why it asks for each one. If it refuses to work without contact access, consider whether you are comfortable with that before you borrow.

Read the privacy policy too. It should name the Nigerian company that controls your data and tell you how to ask for it to be deleted when your loan is closed.

How to make sure you have the real Umba

  • Install from the official store listing and check the publisher name.
  • Confirm your agreement names Umba Digital Solutions Limited.
  • Use only Nigerian support contacts shown inside the app; the Kenyan numbers on umba.com serve Kenyan customers.
  • Repay only through the app's own channels, and never pay an upfront fee to a person to release a loan.

If a lender's agents harass you, see loan app harassment: your rights and the FCCPC complaint process.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company. Its Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Loans on Spaces are lent by that bank for Spaces merchants only, with the full agreement shown for you to accept.

Questions people ask

Is Umba approved by FCCPC in Nigeria?

Yes. The FCCPC's approval table, read in October 2026, lists Umba Digital Solutions Limited with the Umba mobile app and Umba web.

Is Umba a bank in Nigeria?

We found an FCCPC lending approval, not a CBN banking licence. Umba's website describes a Central Bank of Kenya licence, which does not apply in Nigeria.

Is my money safe in Umba Nigeria?

Ask Umba which CBN-licensed institution holds Naira balances and whether NDIC cover applies. Kenyan deposit insurance does not cover Nigerian accounts.

Who owns Umba loan app in Nigeria?

The FCCPC register names Umba Digital Solutions Limited as the company behind the Umba apps in Nigeria.
