Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Importing Nigerian peppers: phytosanitary checks

Fresh scotch bonnet, tatashe and other Nigerian peppers need a phytosanitary certificate if controlled; dried chilli is sampled for aflatoxins.

The short answer

Fresh Nigerian peppers such as ata rodo and tatashe are plant products: if the GOV.UK plant health lookup puts Capsicum from Nigeria in a controlled category, each consignment needs a phytosanitary certificate, and high and medium A goods must be pre-notified on IPAFFS and checked at a BCP. Fresh or dried chilli is also sampled for aflatoxins at high priority and for pesticide residues, with Nigeria named, under the 2026/27 monitoring plan.

Peppers are where food safety and plant health meet. A fresh pepper can carry insects or diseases that threaten UK crops, so it faces plant health controls; a dried one can carry mould toxins or pesticide residues, so it faces food sampling. Many importers deal with both.

Fresh peppers: the certificate

Under GOV.UK's plant import guidance, goods in the high, medium A or medium B risk categories need a phytosanitary certificate for each consignment, issued in the exporting country after inspection. Most fresh fruit and vegetables are controlled: GOV.UK's personal import page says most fruit and vegetables from outside the EU need a certificate, and its exemption list (banana, plantain, mango, coconut, citrus and a few others) does not include peppers.

For commercial imports, confirm the category by searching "Capsicum" (with the species, such as Capsicum chinense for scotch bonnet types or Capsicum annuum) and Nigeria on the "Check plant health information and import rules" service. The certificate must name the botanical species and match the invoice and packing list exactly.

Pre-notification and checks

StepRule (GOV.UK, updated 27 Aug 2026)
RegisterRegister for IPAFFS; this makes you a professional operator for high and medium A goods
Notify by air or RoRoAt least 4 working hours before arrival
Notify other freightAt least 1 working day before arrival
Entry pointBCP that can handle plants, or an approved control point
Documentary check fee£5.25 per certificate (England and Wales)
Identity and physical checksFee depends on plant material; see the Plant Health Portal schedule

Fresh peppers usually come by air, so the 4-working-hour rule is the one most importers meet. "Working hours" matters: a Friday evening flight may need notification earlier than you think. See IPAFFS pre-notification and Heathrow border control posts.

Food sampling on fresh and dried peppers

The UK National Monitoring Plan 2026/27 lists:

  • fresh or dried chilli peppers for aflatoxins, high priority;
  • sweet and bell peppers, chilli peppers and others for pesticide residues, medium priority, with Nigeria among the countries named;
  • sweet and bell peppers for Salmonella and E. coli, high priority (other countries named);
  • crushed pepper and spices for Sudan dyes, high priority (other countries named).

Ask the grower or exporter which pesticides were used and when, and whether residue testing has been done. Dried pepper should be dried quickly and stored dry to limit mould. For ground pepper and spice mixes, see importing Nigerian spices.

Where it goes wrong

  • Certificate names a different species or quantity from the shipment.
  • IPAFFS notification late or missing.
  • Peppers packed with leaves or soil.
  • Mixed consignments of several vegetables with one vague description.

On the Nigerian side, the exporter applies for the certificate before loading; the steps are in getting a Nigerian phytosanitary certificate.

Planning an air shipment of fresh peppers

Fresh peppers lose value by the hour, so paperwork delays cost more than for dried goods. Plan the sequence before the first order:

  1. Confirm the plant health category and register for IPAFFS well ahead of the first flight.
  2. Agree with the exporter when the Nigerian inspection will happen relative to harvest and packing.
  3. Get the certificate details, flight number and arrival time early enough to file the IPAFFS notification inside the 4-working-hour rule.
  4. Book a customs agent who knows the BCP the airline uses and its opening hours.
  5. Arrange collection and cold storage for the moment checks clear.

Keep each consignment's certificate, notification reference and check outcome together. A record of clean consignments is useful evidence if a later one is held and you need to show your process works.

Price the shipment with all of this in mind: the documentary check fee per certificate, identity and physical check fees, port health charges, the agent's fee and the cost of any produce lost to delay. A margin that works on dried pepper can disappear on fresh pepper once these are added, so work them out per kilo before quoting your buyers.

Where Pryme fits

Fresh produce suppliers usually need payment before they release goods to the airline. A Pryme Business Account holds GBP and NGN with local details, so a UK importer can pay a Nigerian supplier in naira without a chain of agents; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I need a phytosanitary certificate to import peppers from Nigeria?

If Capsicum from Nigeria is in a controlled category on the GOV.UK lookup service, yes, for each consignment. Most fresh fruit and vegetables from outside the EU are controlled.

How long before arrival must I notify IPAFFS for peppers?

For high and medium A goods, at least 4 working hours before arrival by air or roll-on roll-off, and 1 working day for other freight.

Can I bring scotch bonnet peppers in my suitcase?

Peppers are not on GOV.UK's exempt list for personal imports from outside the EU, so they need a phytosanitary certificate.

What do UK checks test dried chilli for?

Aflatoxins at high priority, and pesticide residues and Sudan dyes on some pepper and spice products, under the 2026/27 monitoring plan.
