Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Phytosanitary certificates for plant products from Nigeria

When plant products from Nigeria need a phytosanitary certificate, who issues it, the 13-day window, IPAFFS timing and UK checks.

The short answer

Plants and plant products that GB classes as high risk, medium risk A or medium risk B need a phytosanitary certificate issued in Nigeria by the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) for each consignment, dated no more than 13 days before or after the goods leave. Low risk products are exempt. The UK importer uploads a scan to IPAFFS, notifies at least 4 working hours before an air arrival or 1 working day for sea freight, and pays a £5.25 documentary check fee per certificate in England and Wales.

Peppers, yams, leaves, seeds, cut flowers, live plants and some dried produce can carry pests that UK plant health rules are designed to keep out. If you import these from Nigeria for sale, the phytosanitary certificate is the document that lets them in. Getting the date or the category wrong is a common reason consignments are held.

Which products need a certificate

GOV.UK guidance on importing plants and plant products from non-EU countries into Great Britain (updated 27 August 2026) uses four risk categories:

CategoryPhytosanitary certificateEntry and checks
High riskRequiredThrough a border control post that handles plants; scan on IPAFFS; importer registered on IPAFFS
Medium risk ARequiredSame as high risk
Medium risk BRequiredUnder plant health controls; original certificate posted to APHA or SASA
Low riskNot requiredExempt from plant health controls

GOV.UK does not print a product list on that page. It sends you to the Defra plant health portal to look up your commodity, and warns that categories can change. Check each product, and check again before each season. Some goods are prohibited unless they can meet scientifically justified requirements.

Who issues it in Nigeria

The certificate comes from the plant health authority of the exporting country, which in Nigeria is NAQS, an agency under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Its website lists phytosanitary certificate applications, fast-track commodity examination and seaport inspection and certification among its services. Fees are paid through Remita, with amounts on its user fees page.

Two NAQS tools help you as a buyer:

  • Certificate verification. NAQS links a verification service at verifyphyto.naqsportal.net. Use it to check a certificate number before goods are loaded.
  • ePhyto. NAQS links an ePhyto application. Ask your supplier whether your certificate will be issued electronically or on paper.

The rules that catch people out

  1. The 13-day window. GOV.UK says the certificate must be issued no more than 13 days before or after the consignment leaves the exporting country. A certificate issued for an earlier shipment cannot be reused.
  2. One certificate per consignment. Splitting a load across two flights usually means two certificates.
  3. IPAFFS timing. Notify at least 4 working hours before landing for air and roll-on roll-off freight, and at least 1 working day before arrival for other freight.
  4. Paper originals. For high risk and medium risk goods the original paper certificate goes to APHA (or SASA in Scotland) within 3 days.
  5. Wood packaging. Pallets and crates must meet the ISPM 15 standard.

Fees and checks at the border

In England and Wales the documentary check costs £5.25 per phytosanitary certificate (GOV.UK, August 2026). Identity and physical check fees depend on the type of material and are set out in a separate fee schedule. Port health charges and, at Dover or Eurotunnel, a common user charge may also apply. Checks are carried out by APHA in England and Wales and SASA in Scotland.

Worked example

Example only: an importer brings in four air shipments of fresh peppers in a quarter, each with one certificate. Documentary checks cost 4 × £5.25 = £21.00, before identity and physical check fees, which vary by commodity and must be taken from the fee schedule.

Steps for a first shipment

  1. Look up each product's risk category on the Defra plant health portal.
  2. If high risk or medium risk A, register on IPAFFS so you become a registered professional operator.
  3. Choose a port or airport with a border control post that handles plants.
  4. Ask the supplier to book NAQS inspection so the certificate falls inside the 13-day window, and to send a scan as soon as it is issued.
  5. Verify the certificate number on the NAQS verification service.
  6. Submit the IPAFFS notification in time for the transport mode, and arrange for the original to reach APHA or SASA within 3 days.
  7. Keep copies of everything with the invoice and the airway bill or bill of lading.

Processed foods and other permits

Processed and packaged foods may fall outside plant health controls but inside food rules. NAFDAC's export guideline asks for a NAQS phytosanitary certificate copy when issuing a health certificate for processed and semi-processed food, so your supplier may need one even where the UK does not; see NAFDAC export certification. Peppers and yams have their own guides: Nigerian peppers and yam tubers.

Where Pryme fits

Perishable shipments leave little time between invoice and departure. Paying from a Pryme Business Account in the currency your supplier invoices in avoids a last-minute conversion, and Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Who issues a phytosanitary certificate in Nigeria?

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), the country's plant health authority, issues it for each consignment.

How old can a phytosanitary certificate be for the UK?

GOV.UK says it must be issued no more than 13 days before or after the consignment leaves the exporting country.

Do all plant products from Nigeria need a certificate?

No. Low risk plant products are exempt. High risk, medium risk A and medium risk B goods need one; check your product on the Defra plant health portal.

How do I check a NAQS certificate is real?

NAQS links a verification service at verifyphyto.naqsportal.net. Check the number before the goods are loaded.
