Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ireland

Importing Ankara fabric and clothing from Nigeria to Ireland

Ankara fabric and Nigerian-made clothes need the right commodity code, proof of origin for any GSP preference, and an EU fibre label before sale.

The short answer

To import Ankara fabric or clothing from Nigeria into Ireland you need an EORI number, the correct commodity code for each item (fabric by the yard and finished garments are classified differently), and customs duty plus import VAT paid on value, freight and insurance. Nigeria is a beneficiary of the EU's Standard GSP, which can reduce or suspend duty, but only for goods that originate in Nigeria and come with the required proof. Before you sell, EU Regulation 1007/2011 requires each textile product to carry a fibre composition label, also shown before purchase online.

Start with what you are actually importing

Ankara is the name most Nigerians use for printed wax-style cotton fabric, but for customs it is not one product. A bolt of printed cotton, a tailored buba and sokoto, a knitted top and a gele headwrap can each sit under a different commodity code with a different duty rate. Revenue's page on buying goods from outside the EU, published 1 July 2026, says duty is charged at the rate set in the EU's TARIC database for the product, so the code decides the cost.

  • Fabric by the yard or bolt: classified by fibre (cotton, polyester, blends), whether it is woven or knitted, and its weight and finish such as printed.
  • Finished clothing: classified as garments, again split by woven or knitted, by fibre, and by type of garment.
  • Accessories (bags, beaded jewellery, caps): may sit under codes outside the garment headings; check each one.

Look each product up in TARIC with your broker before you agree a price with the supplier, and keep the fibre content from the supplier in writing; you will need it for both the code and the label.

Duty, VAT and the €3 small-parcel charge

Revenue sets out the order of charges. Customs value is the price of the goods plus transport, postage and insurance. Customs duty is that value multiplied by the TARIC rate. Import VAT is charged at the Irish rate on the customs value plus duty. From 1 July 2026, most e-commerce packages of €150 or less pay a flat €3 customs duty per item, counted per distinct product type, instead of the TARIC rate.

Example (illustrative only)Amount
Fabric invoice€2,000
Air freight and insurance€400
Customs value€2,400
Duty at an example rate of 8%€192
VAT base (value + duty)€2,592
Import VAT at an example rate of 23%€596.16

The rates in this example are placeholders to show the arithmetic, not the rates for your goods; check TARIC for the code and Revenue for the VAT rate. If you are registered for VAT and for Customs and Excise, Revenue's postponed accounting page (published 17 February 2026) lets you account for that import VAT on your VAT3 return instead of paying it at the border. The full method is in our guide to customs duty and VAT on goods from Nigeria.

Nigerian origin and the GSP preference

The GSP Hub page on Nigeria, last updated 15 October 2026, says Nigeria is a beneficiary of the EU's Standard GSP. Under that arrangement duty is suspended on non-sensitive products and reduced on sensitive ones, covering about 66% of EU tariff lines. In 2025, GSP preferential imports from Nigeria were €153 million, and the preference was used on 66% of eligible imports, so roughly a third of eligible imports did not use it.

Two cautions matter for fabric traders:

  1. Origin is where the goods were made, not where you bought them. Not every wax print sold in a Nigerian market was made in Nigeria. Fabric bought in Lagos but woven and printed elsewhere is unlikely to qualify as Nigerian origin; the GSP rules of origin decide, and your supplier must be able to show where and how the goods were made.
  2. The preference is not automatic. It applies only if the code carries a GSP rate in TARIC and the shipment comes with the proof of origin the GSP rules require. Confirm both before you rely on a lower rate in your pricing. The GSP Hub page names the Nigerian Export Promotion Council as a contact for Nigerian exporters.

Garments sewn in Nigeria by a tailor from imported fabric raise the same question in a different form: whether the work done in Nigeria is enough to confer origin. Ask your broker to check the rule for your exact code.

Labels before you sell

EU Regulation 1007/2011 governs textile names and labels. Article 14 says textile products must be labelled or marked with their fibre composition whenever they are made available on the market, and the label must be durable, easily legible, visible, accessible and, if a label, securely attached. Between businesses in the supply chain, the label can be replaced or supplemented by commercial documents, so a wholesale bolt sold to another trader can travel with an invoice that states the fibre content.

Article 16 adds three points that catch online sellers:

  • Fibre composition must be visible to the consumer before purchase, including when the purchase is made online, so a product page on your website or a marketplace listing needs it.
  • A trade mark or business name may appear next to the composition, but other information is shown separately.
  • The label must be in the official language or languages of the member state where the product is sold to consumers, unless that state provides otherwise.

In practice: get the fibre breakdown from your supplier in writing, sew or attach labels before the item goes on sale, and copy the same wording into every listing. Do not describe fabric as "100% cotton" because it feels like cotton; the label is a legal statement.

Getting set up

  1. Register for tax with Revenue, as a sole trader or company.
  2. Get an EORI number; see how to get an EORI in Ireland.
  3. Agree product codes and duty rates with your broker, and whether GSP origin proof is available.
  4. Ask the supplier for a packing list showing fibre content, quantity and value per line.
  5. Label stock before sale and keep invoices, customs entries and payment records together.

Where Pryme fits

Fabric suppliers in Lagos usually want paying in naira. A Pryme Business Account holds euro and naira, and Swap converts only when you choose, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve. You can then pay the supplier from the same account and keep a verifiable receipt alongside your customs entry. See business multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Do I pay customs duty on Ankara fabric from Nigeria?

Usually yes, at the TARIC rate for its commodity code on the value plus freight and insurance, then import VAT. The GSP preference may reduce or remove duty only if the fabric is Nigerian origin and the proof of origin is provided.

Is Nigeria in the EU GSP?

Yes. The GSP Hub page on Nigeria (updated 15 October 2026) says Nigeria is a beneficiary of the Standard GSP.

Do I need to label Ankara clothes I sell in Ireland?

Yes. Regulation 1007/2011 requires a fibre composition label on textile products made available on the market, and the composition must be shown before purchase online.

Can I sell Ankara on Instagram or my website without labels?

No. Article 16 of Regulation 1007/2011 says the fibre composition must be visible to the consumer before purchase, including for online sales.
