Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How Nigerian web developers get foreign clients

The four channels that bring foreign work, the worries a foreign client has about hiring from Nigeria, and how to invoice and get paid cleanly.

The short answer

Nigerian web developers usually win foreign clients through four channels: freelance platforms, public code on GitHub, agencies that subcontract, and referrals from past clients. What closes the deal is answering a foreign client's real worries (communication, time-zone overlap, code ownership and payment safety) before they ask, then invoicing in their currency and getting paid to account details in your own name.

Channel 1: freelance platforms

Platforms give you access to clients who are already looking. The cost is a fee and competition. Upwork's fee page, when we opened it in October 2026, described 20% of the first $500 billed to each client, 10% from $500.01 to $10,000 and 5% above that, so long relationships get cheaper. Win the first job with small, well-defined tasks (bug fixes, a landing page, a speed fix) where you can show a result fast. See winning a first Upwork job.

Channel 2: GitHub and public work

A foreign client cannot easily check a Nigerian reference, but they can read your code. A short, clean public profile does a lot of selling:

  • Two or three pinned repositories that solve real problems, with a README that explains setup, decisions and screenshots.
  • A live demo link for each, so a non-technical client can click through.
  • Tests and a sensible commit history; clients and their technical advisers look for both.
  • Contributions to open-source projects in the stack you sell, even small documentation fixes.

Link the profile from your platform profile, LinkedIn and email signature. Our guide to building a portfolio with no clients covers case-study write-ups.

Channel 3: agencies; Channel 4: referrals

Agencies abroad often subcontract overflow work. Rates are lower than direct clients, but the work is steady and you learn how foreign teams run projects. Approach agencies whose public work uses your stack, with a short note and two relevant links. Referrals are where most long-term clients come from: finish every job by asking whether the client knows anyone else who needs similar work, and ask for a review or written recommendation while the result is fresh. A referral arrives with trust already built, so it is the one channel where you can quote nearer your full rate from the first job. Keep a short list of past clients and check in every few months with a useful note, not a sales pitch.

What foreign clients worry about, and how to answer

WorryWhat to show or offer
Will we be able to communicate?Clear written English, a short video call before starting, and a fixed weekly update
Time zonesStated overlap hours (Nigeria is close to UK and European working hours; for US clients, offer a morning overlap window for them)
Who owns the code?A clause assigning IP to the client on full payment, code in their repository from day one
Will the work be finished?Milestones with a demo at each, so they see progress before paying more
Payment safetyPlatform escrow, or a deposit plus milestone invoices outside a platform
Access and securityLeast-privilege access to their systems, no shared passwords, and a handover checklist

A first message that gets replies

Cold messages to agencies or founders fail when they are about you. Make them about the client's site. Open with one specific observation, such as a slow mobile load time, a broken form or a checkout step that confuses, then say what you would do and how long it would take, then give one link to similar work. Keep it under 120 words and end with a small, concrete offer: a 20-minute call, or a written audit of three issues. Send ten careful messages a week rather than a hundred copied ones; tailored messages get answered, and copied ones read as spam. Track who you contacted, when, and what they said, so your follow-up a week later refers to the first note.

Invoicing and getting paid

Invoice in the client's currency, with your legal name and address, a clear description of the milestone, the amount, due date and your account details. Our guide to invoicing a foreign client has a checklist. US clients may ask for a Form W-8BEN; the IRS describes it as a certificate of foreign status given to the payer when requested, not sent to the IRS.

For payment outside a platform, USD, GBP or EUR account details in your own name let the client pay as a domestic transfer. Fees differ by provider: Grey's pricing update (May 2025) lists ACH deposits at 0.8% (minimum $2, maximum $10) and Fedwire at $20 flat; Raenest's January 2026 fee update lists four free deposits a month, then 0.8% capped at $10, with ACH at $1 flat. Check the provider's page on the day.

Example: a $2,400 build split into three milestones of $800 each, paid by ACH to Grey, costs 0.8% of $800, which is $6.40, per milestone; $19.20 in total, before conversion.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account gives you USD, GBP and EUR details in your name with NGN, and Swap converts only when you choose. Developers working as a company can use a Business Account with invoicing.

Questions people ask

How do Nigerian developers get clients abroad?

Mostly through freelance platforms, public code and demos on GitHub, agencies that subcontract, and referrals from earlier clients.

Is it legal to work for foreign clients from Nigeria?

Yes, you can sell services abroad. Income is still taxable in Nigeria if you are tax resident, according to BusinessDay's summary of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.

Should I charge foreign clients in dollars?

Usually yes, in their own currency, which avoids exchange surprises for them; you choose when to convert.

How do I protect myself from a foreign client not paying?

Use platform escrow or take a deposit and invoice by milestone, and keep code access until payment where your contract allows.
