Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to win your first Upwork job from Nigeria

A new Upwork account competes on proposals and Connects, not country. A practical plan for the profile, the niche and the first proposals.

The short answer

Your first Upwork job is won by a verified, specific profile and a few well-targeted proposals, not by hiding where you live. New accounts compete on the quality and timing of proposals, each of which costs Connects ($0.15 each per Upwork), so spend them on narrow jobs that match proven samples, sent early to clients who already hire.

What actually decides the first hire

Many Nigerian freelancers believe clients reject them for their country. Some clients do filter by location, and some jobs, per Upwork's verification page, require you to be physically in the US. But for most open jobs, a new freelancer with no reviews is weighed on three things the client can see in seconds: the first two lines of the proposal, how closely the profile matches the job, and samples that prove the skill.

Pretending to be elsewhere does not help and can end your account. Upwork's verification page says the country on your ID and profile must match, and falsified documents lead to permanent suspension. Compete on the work.

Step 1: get the account clean

  • Complete identity verification promptly; Upwork gives seven days from its email, and until you verify you cannot submit proposals.
  • Use the name on your ID everywhere, including your withdrawal method and tax information, since Upwork requires them to match.
  • Use a clear, recent photo; Upwork may ask for a short video call or phone photo to match you to it.
  • Set up a withdrawal route early so a first payment is not stuck. See withdrawing Upwork earnings in Nigeria.

Step 2: pick a narrow niche

"Graphic designer" competes with everyone. "Pitch deck designer for fintech start-ups" competes with far fewer people and makes your proposals easier to write, because every job you apply for looks like the samples you already have.

A useful test: can you name three recent job posts you would apply for, and does your portfolio already show that exact output? If not, build two or three sample pieces first. Our guide to a freelance portfolio with no clients yet covers how.

Step 3: write a profile a client can scan

  • Title: the service and the client type, not a list of ten skills.
  • Opening lines: the result you deliver and for whom. Clients often read only the first part.
  • Portfolio: three to five pieces that match your niche, each with one line on the problem and outcome.
  • Rate: realistic for a new account, but not so low that it signals poor quality. Read pricing in dollars or naira.

Step 4: spend Connects like a budget

Each proposal uses Connects, which Upwork prices at $0.15 each, sold in bundles. The number per job is shown on the post and can change. Some freelancers receive 10 free Connects a month, and new users may get a one-time 50 after buying Connects or subscribing to Freelancer Plus. Connects come back only if the client cancels before hiring or Upwork removes the post, so choose carefully.

Which jobs to target first

  • Posts from clients with a verified payment method and past hires.
  • Posts that are recent, where few proposals have been sent.
  • Smaller, well-defined tasks that a client can trust to someone new.
  • Jobs whose wording matches a sample you can link to.

Upwork also lets you boost a proposal by bidding extra Connects; the winning amount depends on competing bids. Boost only where you are a strong match. Our Upwork Connects guide has a worked monthly budget.

Step 5: write the proposal

  1. Open with their problem. Repeat the key requirement in your own words in the first sentence.
  2. Show proof. Link the one sample closest to the job.
  3. Say how you would do it. Two or three concrete steps, with a delivery date.
  4. Ask one smart question. It shows you read the post and invites a reply.
  5. Keep it short. A focused 120 to 180 words usually beats a long cover letter.

Step 6: deliver the first contract well

Your first review sets the tone for the next ten proposals. Confirm scope in writing on the platform, deliver on or before the date, and ask for feedback politely when the client is happy. Keep payment on the platform. Upwork's fixed-price protection page says milestones should be funded before you start, so check for the "Funded" label, and that using Submit Work for Payment starts a 14-day countdown to automatic payment.

A realistic timeline

There is no published average time to a first hire, and anyone promising one is guessing. Track your numbers instead: proposals sent, Connects spent, replies and interviews. If you have sent 30 proposals with no replies, change the niche or the opening lines rather than sending 30 more of the same.

Where Pryme fits

When the first payment arrives, a Pryme multicurrency account lets you hold it in USD until you decide to convert with Swap. Read Upwork fees explained to know what your first job will leave you.

Questions people ask

Do Upwork clients avoid Nigerian freelancers?

Some jobs are limited by location and some clients filter, but most open jobs are decided on the proposal, profile match and samples. Misstating your location breaks Upwork's rules.

How many proposals before the first Upwork job?

There is no reliable average. Track replies per proposal and adjust your niche or opening lines if you get no responses after a few dozen.

Should I bid very low to get my first Upwork job?

A modest rate can help a new account, but very low bids can signal poor quality. Price so you can deliver well, and raise rates after reviews.

Is Freelancer Plus needed to get hired?

No. Plus adds 90 monthly Connects and other tools; whether it is worth paying for depends on how many Connects you actually use.
