Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Upwork fees for Nigerian freelancers, explained

Upwork's service fee, Connects and withdrawal charges from its own help pages, and what a $500 job actually leaves you, worked line by line.

The short answer

Upwork charges freelancers a service fee that, according to its own help centre (checked October 2026), ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is locked once the proposal, offer or contract is sent. On top of that, each withdrawal costs money: $0.99 per Direct to Local Bank withdrawal and $50 per US dollar wire, plus any charges your own bank adds.

The service fee: a range, not one number

For years many Nigerian freelancers quoted a single Upwork percentage from memory. The current help centre page does not give one figure. It says the Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract, and that Upwork sets it using factors meant to keep the marketplace balanced across different kinds of work. The page carries no effective date, so treat the range as what Upwork states as at October 2026.

Three details matter more than the range itself:

  • The fee is fixed per contract. Once you send a proposal or receive an offer, the rate on that contract is locked and does not change mid-way.
  • You can see it before you commit. Upwork shows the rate on the proposal or offer screen, in the contract details and in each transaction summary.
  • Some contract types differ. The page says Enterprise clients typically carry a 10% fee (depending on that client's agreement), Direct Contracts carry a reduced fee (no percentage given), and Upwork Payroll and Any Hire contracts carry no Freelancer Service Fee.

Why the range matters when you price

If you quote a client $400 and assume a fee you remember, you may be off by tens of dollars. Work backwards instead: decide what you need to keep, then divide by one minus the fee on the proposal screen. To keep $400 on a contract showing 10%, you would need to quote about $444.45 ($400 ÷ 0.90). At 15% it would be about $470.59 ($400 ÷ 0.85). Our guide on pricing in dollars or naira covers the wider question of what to charge.

Connects: the cost before you earn anything

Upwork also charges for applying. Proposals use Connects, which Upwork's help page prices at $0.15 each, sold in bundles. The number a job needs varies and is shown on the job post. This is not a deduction from earnings, but it is a real cost of winning work, especially for new accounts sending many proposals. Our guide to Upwork Connects covers how they work and how to waste fewer.

Withdrawal fees from Upwork's own pages

After the service fee, money sits in your Upwork balance. Moving it out costs a fee that depends on the method. As stated on Upwork's help pages in October 2026:

MethodUpwork's feeStated timingNotes
Direct to Local Bank$0.99 per withdrawalWithin four business daysYour bank may add incoming fees; Upwork lists a $3,000 limit for Nigeria
Payoneer"A small per-transfer fee" (amount not stated on the page)Typically within 24 hours once set upPayoneer may charge its own conversion, maintenance and transfer fees
US dollar wire$50 per wireProcessed in one business day; up to seven to arriveIntermediary and receiving banks may charge more

The full list of routes, and what to check for each, is in how to withdraw Upwork earnings in Nigeria.

Worked example: what a $500 job leaves

Example only. Suppose you finish a $500 fixed-price job. We show two service fee levels within Upwork's stated range, because your actual rate is the one on your contract.

LineAt a 10% feeAt a 15% fee
Job value$500.00$500.00
Freelancer Service Fee−$50.00−$75.00
Balance after fee$450.00$425.00
Direct to Local Bank withdrawal−$0.99−$0.99
Reaches your bank (before any bank charge)$449.01$424.01
Same balance sent by US dollar wire instead$400.00$375.00

To turn the dollar line into naira, multiply by the rate you are actually offered on the day. Purely to show the arithmetic, at a round ₦1,000 to $1 (not a market rate) $449.01 would be ₦449,010 and $424.01 would be ₦424,010. Check the live rate in your bank or app before you convert, and compare it with the rate other routes would give you, because the conversion spread can cost more than the $0.99 fee.

If you spent, say, 20 Connects winning the job, add $3.00 (20 × $0.15) to the cost side. One withdrawal of a larger balance costs the same $0.99 as one small withdrawal, so batching withdrawals saves fees, within the limit for your country.

Costs that sit outside Upwork

  • Exchange spread. The difference between the rate you get and the mid-market rate is often the biggest hidden cost.
  • Incoming bank charges. Upwork's own page warns that some banks charge to receive funds.
  • Tax. Upwork's fee is not your tax bill. Read do Nigerian freelancers pay tax on dollar income? for the rules and sources.
  • Onward transfers. Once the money is in naira, normal bank charges on transfers out of your account apply, so check your bank's tariff.

A useful habit is to keep a simple monthly record: gross earnings, service fees, Connects bought, withdrawal fees and the rate you converted at. After three months you will know your real take-home percentage, which is the number to use when you set rates or compare Upwork with other platforms.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds USD alongside NGN, GBP and EUR, with local account details for each, so dollar earnings can stay in dollars until you choose to convert. When you do, Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line before you approve. See multicurrency accounts for how it works.

Questions people ask

What percentage does Upwork take from freelancers?

Upwork's help centre says the Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract (checked October 2026). The rate for a specific contract is shown on the proposal or offer screen and stays fixed for that contract.

Does Upwork charge to withdraw to a Nigerian bank?

Yes. Upwork lists $0.99 per Direct to Local Bank withdrawal, with arrival within four business days. Your bank may add its own incoming charge.

Is the Upwork fee charged on the client side too?

Clients pay their own fees, which are separate from the freelancer fee. This article covers only what comes out of the freelancer's earnings.

How much do I keep from a $100 Upwork job?

As an example, at a 10% fee you keep $90 before withdrawal; withdrawing that alone to a local bank costs $0.99, leaving $89.01 before any bank or exchange cost.
