Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

USDT and stablecoins in Nigeria: what they are and the risks

How dollar stablecoins like USDT work, why Nigerians use them, and the depeg, custody, network and legal risks to understand before you hold any.

The short answer

A stablecoin such as USDT is a crypto token designed to keep a steady value, usually one US dollar, because its issuer says it holds reserves behind each token. Nigerians use them to hold dollar value and receive payments from abroad, but a stablecoin is not a bank deposit: it can trade below its target (a depeg), can be lost if the platform or wallet holding it fails, and falls under the SEC as a digital asset under the Investments and Securities Act 2025.

What a stablecoin is

A stablecoin is a token on a blockchain whose value is meant to track another asset, most often the US dollar. USDT and USDC are the best known. In the usual model, the issuer creates tokens when large customers send it dollars, cancels them when tokens are redeemed, and says it holds reserves to back the tokens in circulation.

For most holders in Nigeria, the price is not set by redeeming with the issuer but by trading: you buy and sell USDT for naira on an exchange or a peer-to-peer marketplace, at whatever rate buyers and sellers agree. That naira rate moves every day; check it on the platform you use.

Types of stablecoin

TypeHow it keeps its valueMain risk
Fiat-backed (USDT, USDC)Issuer holds cash and short-term assetsQuality and accessibility of reserves; issuer failure
Crypto-backedLocked crypto collateral worth more than the tokensSharp falls in the collateral
AlgorithmicSoftware adjusts supplyHistory of collapses when confidence goes
Naira-linked (cNGN)Designed to track the nairaBeing tested in the SEC's sandbox; not a dollar hedge

The SEC's Registered FinTech Operators page lists the cNGN stablecoin offering (Wrapped CBDC Ltd) in its Regulatory Incubation sandbox, with a test period from August 2024 to August 2025.

Why Nigerians use USDT

  • Holding dollar value: when the naira weakens, a dollar token keeps its dollar value.
  • Receiving payments from abroad: some freelancers and businesses are paid in stablecoins. Cleva's help centre, for example, accepts deposits of USDT on the TRC20 and ERC20 networks and USDC on Solana, with a minimum of $10.
  • Moving money across borders outside bank hours and without a correspondent bank.

The risks

1. Depeg risk

A stablecoin's market price can fall below its target if holders lose confidence in the reserves or the issuer. During a depeg, a token meant to be worth $1 trades for less, and you may not be able to sell at $1. Algorithmic stablecoins have failed outright; fiat-backed ones depend on the issuer's reserves and its willingness and ability to redeem.

2. Custody risk

If your USDT sits on an exchange, the exchange holds it for you. If the exchange freezes withdrawals, is hacked or fails, you are a creditor, not a depositor. Stablecoins are not NDIC-insured bank deposits. If you hold them in your own wallet, you control them, but losing your recovery phrase means losing the funds, with no one to call.

3. Network risk

USDT exists on several blockchains. Sending USDT on the wrong network (for example, TRC20 tokens to an address expecting ERC20) can mean the funds do not arrive and may not be recoverable. Each network also charges its own transaction fee. Always confirm the network with the receiver and send a small test first.

4. Naira-side risk

Buying and selling USDT through P2P trades exposes your bank account to fraud reports and restrictions. Our guide on P2P crypto trading and its risks explains how this happens.

Worked example: a depeg and the naira rate

Example. You hold 1,000 USDT. During a period of stress the token trades at $0.95, so your holding is worth $950 if you sell then: a $50 loss on paper. Separately, the naira price of USDT on P2P markets can move by more than the dollar price, because it also reflects naira supply and demand. A dollar token protects you from naira weakness only while it holds its peg and while you can sell it at a fair rate.

  • SEC: the Investments and Securities Act 2025 treats digital assets, including stablecoins, as securities, and gives the SEC oversight of their issue and trading, according to TechCabal's summary.
  • CBN: its December 2023 guidelines allow banks to open designated accounts for SEC-licensed virtual asset service providers; banks themselves may not hold or trade crypto.
  • Tax: gains on disposing of digital assets are taxable under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Because the naira value of USDT changes, selling it for more naira than you paid can create a taxable gain; see tax on crypto gains.

For which platforms hold SEC approval, see SEC-licensed crypto exchanges in Nigeria.

What to check first

  1. Who holds the tokens: an exchange, or a wallet you control?
  2. Is the platform on the SEC's pages?
  3. Which network does the sender or receiver use?
  4. How much of your savings would you be comfortable seeing frozen or worth 90 kobo on the dollar for a while?

Where Pryme fits

If you want to hold dollars rather than a dollar token, a Pryme multicurrency account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each. Money stays in the currency it arrived in until you Swap, with the rate shown first and the fee on its own line. Outside Nigeria, financial activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Is USDT legal in Nigeria?

Stablecoins are treated as digital assets, and therefore securities, under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, with the SEC overseeing platforms. The CBN's 2023 guidelines let banks serve SEC-licensed crypto firms but bar banks from trading crypto themselves.

Is USDT always worth one dollar?

It is designed to be, but its market price can drop below $1 if holders lose confidence in the issuer or reserves. That is called a depeg.

Is my USDT insured like a bank deposit?

No. Stablecoins held on an exchange or in a wallet are not NDIC-insured deposits. If the platform fails or you lose your wallet keys, there is no deposit insurance.

What happens if I send USDT on the wrong network?

The funds may not arrive and may not be recoverable. Confirm whether the receiving address uses TRC20, ERC20 or another network, and send a small test amount first.
