Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Upwork vs Fiverr: which is better for Nigerians?

Upwork vs Fiverr for Nigerians: how work is found on each, how fees and payouts compare, and which suits which skill. No winner declared.

The short answer

Neither is better for everyone: on Upwork you pay Connects to send proposals to jobs clients post, with a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract; on Fiverr you publish fixed-price gigs that buyers find and order. The right one depends on your skill, how you like to sell and the payout route that works for you, so check each platform's current fee page before you decide.

The core difference: bidding versus being found

The two platforms ask you to sell in opposite ways, and that matters more than any fee.

UpworkFiverr
Who starts the saleClient posts a job; you send a proposalYou publish a gig; buyer finds and orders it
Cost to applyConnects, $0.15 each per UpworkNo proposal cost in the gig model
PricingHourly or fixed, negotiated per contractPackages you set in advance
Typical workProjects that need scoping and conversationDefined, repeatable deliverables
What wins early workA sharp proposal sent early to the right clientA gig that ranks in search and converts

On Upwork, your effort goes into reading posts and writing proposals. On Fiverr, it goes into building gig pages that rank and convince. Some freelancers are better at one than the other.

Fees: what we can confirm

Upwork's help centre (checked October 2026) says its Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract, set per contract and locked once the proposal or offer is sent. Proposals also cost Connects at $0.15 each. Some freelancers receive 10 free Connects a month.

Fiverr publishes its own seller fee and withdrawal charges in its help centre. We did not verify Fiverr's current figures for this article, so read Fiverr's fee page and its withdrawal page directly before comparing. Our planned guide to what a Nigerian Fiverr seller keeps works through those numbers.

A fair way to compare

Do not compare headline percentages alone. Work out a full example for your own service on each: the order or contract value, minus the platform fee, minus the cost of getting the work (Connects on Upwork, time on gig optimisation on Fiverr), minus withdrawal fees and the exchange spread. That gives your real take-home share.

Payouts from Nigeria

Upwork lists several withdrawal routes. As stated on its pages in October 2026: Direct to Local Bank at $0.99 per withdrawal, arriving within four business days, with a $3,000 limit for Nigeria; Payoneer with a small per-transfer fee; and US dollar wire at $50. See withdrawing Upwork earnings in Nigeria for details.

Fiverr's withdrawal options for Nigerian sellers are set out in its help centre; check which methods your account shows before you commit. Our guide to withdrawing Fiverr earnings in Nigeria covers them. On both platforms, the name on your payout method should match your ID.

Which suits which skill

These are tendencies, not rules. Plenty of freelancers succeed against them.

Often a better fit for Upwork

  • Software development, data work and product design, where clients want to discuss scope first.
  • Long-term roles such as virtual assistance, customer support or ongoing writing retainers.
  • Consulting and specialist work priced by the hour.

Often a better fit for Fiverr

  • Clearly defined outputs: logos, voice-overs, short video edits, presentation design.
  • Services you can deliver repeatedly to a standard, in tiers.
  • Work where buyers want to order without a call.

Who might use both

A designer might sell fixed logo packages on Fiverr and take larger brand projects on Upwork. If you do, keep one legal identity across both, and never move a client off-platform in breach of either platform's terms.

Starting from zero reviews

Both platforms are hardest in the first weeks, for different reasons.

On Upwork, a new profile competes on the proposal itself. You can see the client's hiring history and payment status before you spend Connects, so you can target clients who hire new freelancers. The cost of trying is measurable: if each proposal you send needs 12 Connects, 20 proposals use 240 Connects, or $36 at $0.15 each, as an example.

On Fiverr, a new gig has no history, so early orders depend on search placement, a clear title, honest delivery times and samples that match exactly what the buyer gets. The cost of trying is mostly your time.

On both, identity rules apply from day one. Upwork's verification page, for instance, says the country on your ID and profile must match and that falsified documents lead to permanent suspension. Treat each platform's rules as part of the job.

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. Do I enjoy writing tailored proposals, or would I rather build a strong listing once?
  2. Can my service be packaged into fixed tiers?
  3. Which payout route works for my bank, and what does it cost in total?
  4. Can I afford Connects while I wait for a first hire?
  5. Do I have portfolio samples that show this exact skill?

If you choose Upwork, read how to win your first Upwork job from Nigeria. If you choose Fiverr, start with its seller help pages and build two or three focused gigs.

Where Pryme fits

Whichever platform you use, dollar earnings can sit in USD in a Pryme multicurrency account until you decide to convert with Swap, which shows the rate and fee before you approve. To set prices on either platform, read pricing in dollars or naira.

Questions people ask

Is Fiverr or Upwork easier for beginners in Nigeria?

It depends on how you sell. Upwork rewards strong proposals sent early; Fiverr rewards gig pages that rank and convert. Many beginners try one, track results for a few months and adjust.

Which one takes less commission, Upwork or Fiverr?

Upwork states a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract plus Connects at $0.15 each. Check Fiverr's current seller fee on its help centre and compare full take-home examples, not headline rates.

Can Nigerians withdraw from Fiverr and Upwork?

Upwork lists Direct to Local Bank (with a $3,000 limit for Nigeria), Payoneer and wire routes. Fiverr lists its own options in its help centre; check what your account shows.

Can I use Upwork and Fiverr at the same time?

Yes, many freelancers do. Use the same legal identity on both and follow each platform's rules on payments and communication.
