Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to build a freelance portfolio with no clients yet

No clients yet? Build a portfolio from self-set briefs, scoped pro-bono work and short case studies that show how you think, not only what you made.

The short answer

You build a first portfolio from work you set yourself: two or three realistic sample projects, one carefully scoped pro-bono job, and short case studies that explain the problem, your approach and the result. Clients on freelance platforms look for evidence you can do their specific task, so three relevant, well-explained pieces beat twenty unrelated ones.

Why a portfolio matters more than a CV when you start

A client hiring a freelancer is buying a result, not a job history. When you have no paid work, the portfolio is the only proof that you can produce what they need. The good news is that nobody checks whether a piece was paid for; they check whether it is relevant, finished and explained. A clear sample built around a believable brief does the same job as a paid project, as long as you label it clearly.

On marketplaces such as Upwork and Fiverr, the portfolio sits beside your profile summary and your proposal. A client skimming twenty proposals will open two or three portfolios. You have seconds to show that you have done something close to their task before.

Three ways to create work before your first client

1. Self-set sample projects

Pick the kind of job you want to win, then write yourself a brief as if a real client sent it. A designer might redesign the menu and price list for a fictional Lekki eatery; a writer might produce a 900-word guide for a fictional Abuja logistics firm; a developer might build a booking page for a salon with working form validation. Keep the brief in the case study so the reader sees the constraints you worked under.

2. Redesigns and rewrites of public material

Take something that already exists and improve it: a confusing school admissions page, a long product description, a slow landing page. Show the before, the after and why. Label it clearly as an unsolicited concept, and do not imply the organisation hired you or approved it. Avoid using another company's logo in a way that suggests endorsement.

3. Scoped pro-bono work

Free work for a church, a cooperative, a friend's shop or a student society gives you a real client, real feedback and often a testimonial. The risk is endless requests. Protect yourself by agreeing the scope in writing before you start:

  • One deliverable only (for example, a logo and two colour variations, not a full brand).
  • A fixed number of revision rounds, usually two.
  • A finish date.
  • Permission to show the work and name the client in your portfolio.
  • A short written testimonial if they are pleased.

The case-study format that clients actually read

A gallery of images tells a client what you made. A case study tells them how you would handle their problem, which is what they are really trying to judge. Keep each one short enough to read in a minute.

SectionWhat to writeLength
BriefWho the client is (real or labelled sample), what they needed, any constraints such as budget, deadline or audience2–3 sentences
ApproachThe decisions you made and why: structure, tools, trade-offs3–5 sentences
ResultThe finished piece, plus any measurable outcome you can truthfully stateImages or link, 1–2 sentences
Your roleWhat you did yourself versus what you used or adapted1 sentence
Label'Sample project', 'Concept' or 'Pro-bono for…'A tag

What clients on platforms look at first

Platform clients rarely read everything. From the client side, the order of attention tends to be:

  1. Relevance: is there a piece close to my task, in my industry or format?
  2. Finish: does it look complete and checked, with no typos or broken links?
  3. Thinking: does the short text show the freelancer understood the problem?
  4. Proof of reliability: reviews, a testimonial, or a pro-bono client who can vouch for you.
  5. Fit with the proposal: does the portfolio match what the proposal promises?

This is why a focused portfolio wins. If you offer both CV writing and video editing, keep two separate sets and send the one that matches the job. On Upwork you can attach specific portfolio items to a proposal; choose the closest two rather than everything.

Where to host it

Use the platform's own portfolio section first, because clients see it without leaving the site. Keep a copy elsewhere too, so a suspended or closed account does not take your work with it: a simple personal site, a public folder, Behance or Dribbble for design, GitHub for code. Compress images so the page loads on mobile data, and make sure any link you share opens without a sign-in.

What to check first

  • Each piece is labelled truthfully (sample, concept or pro-bono).
  • You have permission to show any pro-bono client's name and work.
  • Three to five pieces, all relevant to the jobs you are bidding for.
  • Every piece has a case-study note, not just an image.
  • Links work on a phone and without a login.
  • Your profile rate and the quality of the portfolio tell the same story; see how to set your freelance rate in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Once the first client arrives, the next question is getting paid cleanly. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, so a foreign client can pay you in their own currency and you decide when to convert with Swap. See multicurrency accounts, our guide to winning a first Upwork job, and getting paid by international clients.

Questions people ask

Can I put unpaid work in my freelance portfolio?

Yes, as long as you label it clearly as a sample project, a concept or pro-bono work. Clients judge relevance and quality; they do not expect every piece to be paid.

How many portfolio samples do I need to start on Upwork or Fiverr?

Three to five relevant pieces is a sensible start. Two pieces closely matched to a job usually do more than ten unrelated ones.

Is it okay to redesign a real company's website for my portfolio?

It is common, but label it as an unsolicited concept and do not suggest the company hired you or endorsed the work.

How do I stop pro-bono work from taking over my time?

Agree one deliverable, a fixed number of revisions and an end date in writing before you start, plus permission to show the work.
