Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to set your freelance rate in Nigeria: hourly vs project

A method for Nigerian freelancers: living costs, overheads, profit and tax, turned into an hourly rate and a project quote, with a worked naira example.

The short answer

Set your freelance rate by adding your yearly living costs, business overheads and a profit margin, grossing up for income tax, then dividing by the hours you can realistically bill. In our worked example, ₦450,000 a month of living costs and ₦120,000 of overheads need about ₦9.44 million a year before tax, or roughly ₦8,000 per billable hour, using the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 bands.

Most Nigerian freelancers set prices by looking at what others charge. That tells you the market, not whether the price keeps you afloat. The method below starts from what your life and business cost, so you know your floor before you look at anyone else's number. It works for designers, writers, developers, virtual assistants and consultants alike.

The method in five steps

  1. Living costs. What you need each month to live: rent, food, transport, school fees, family support, savings.
  2. Business overheads. What the work costs: internet, power backup, software subscriptions, equipment replacement, platform and payment fees, professional help such as an accountant.
  3. Profit and buffer. A margin on top for slow months, late payers and growth. Freelance income is uneven; the buffer is what stops one bad month becoming a crisis.
  4. Tax. Gross up so that what remains after personal income tax covers steps 1 to 3.
  5. Billable hours. Divide by the hours you can actually charge, not the hours you work.

Worked example

All figures are an example for one freelancer, not a recommendation.

ItemMonthlyYearly
Living costs₦450,000₦5,400,000
Business overheads₦120,000₦1,440,000
Profit and buffer at 20% of the two lines above₦114,000₦1,368,000
Needed after tax and overheads (living + profit)₦6,768,000

Grossing up for tax

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, in force from 1 January 2026, the personal income tax bands are: first ₦800,000 at 0%, next ₦2.2 million at 15%, next ₦9 million at 18%, next ₦13 million at 21%, next ₦25 million at 23%, and above ₦50 million at 25% (PaySpace, Nov 2025; BusinessDay, Jan 2026). Overheads that are costs of earning the income are deducted before tax; for simplicity this example ignores other reliefs such as rent relief.

Try annual fees of ₦9,440,000. Less overheads of ₦1,440,000, taxable income is ₦8,000,000. Tax is ₦0 on the first ₦800,000, ₦330,000 on the next ₦2.2 million, and ₦900,000 on the remaining ₦5 million at 18%: ₦1,230,000 in total. After overheads and tax, ₦6,770,000 is left, which covers the ₦6,768,000 needed.

From yearly fees to an hourly rate

Billable hours are fewer than working hours. Admin, marketing, proposals, learning and unpaid revisions take time. Suppose you work 48 weeks a year and can bill 25 hours a week: 1,200 billable hours. ₦9,440,000 ÷ 1,200 = about ₦7,867 an hour; round to ₦8,000.

Hourly or per project?

Hourly
Fair when scope is unclear or keeps changing, such as support, ongoing development or consulting. The client carries the risk of the job taking longer.
Per project
Better when you can define the outcome, such as a logo set, a five-page website or a report. You carry the risk of overruns, and you keep the benefit if you work faster.

To turn the hourly rate into a project quote: estimate hours realistically, multiply, then add a contingency for unknowns. Example: a website you estimate at 30 hours × ₦8,000 = ₦240,000; add 15% contingency and quote ₦276,000. State what is included (pages, revision rounds) and what is charged extra. See how to quote a client.

Common pricing mistakes

  • Dividing by 40 hours a week. Nobody bills every working hour. Using 40 instead of 25 in the example above would give about ₦4,900 an hour (₦9,440,000 ÷ 1,920), a rate that cannot cover the year.
  • Forgetting tax. A rate that only covers costs leaves the tax bill to come from savings.
  • Leaving out unpaid time. Proposals, calls and revisions are work. Either price them into the rate or charge for extra revision rounds.
  • Discounting the first job too deeply. The first price becomes the client's anchor. If you discount, say so on the invoice and state the normal rate.
  • Never revisiting. Set a date each year to rework the numbers.

Adjusting for platforms and dollars

  • Platform fees come off the top. If a platform keeps 20% (Fiverr's sellers receive 80% of the order), a ₦8,000 target means charging ₦10,000 equivalent.
  • Dollar clients. Work out your rate in naira first, then convert at a cautious rate and round up. Revisit when the naira moves. See pricing in dollars or naira.
  • Review yearly. Costs rise. Headline inflation was 14.63% year on year in September 2026, per NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria; a rate set two years ago is likely too low.

What to check first

  • Your real monthly living costs, from bank statements, not memory.
  • Every overhead, including power and internet backup.
  • How many hours you billed last month, not how many you worked.
  • Whether a client has asked for a fixed scope (quote per project) or open support (quote hourly).

Where Pryme fits

Separating tax money from spending money makes the plan above hold. A Savings Box can hold a set share of each payment for your tax bill, and multicurrency balances keep dollar fees in dollars until you choose to convert.

Questions people ask

How much should I charge per hour as a freelancer in Nigeria?

Work out your yearly living costs, overheads, profit and tax, then divide by billable hours. In our example that gives about ₦8,000 an hour.

Should I charge per hour or per project?

Hourly suits unclear or ongoing work; per project suits a defined outcome. For projects, estimate hours, multiply by your rate and add a contingency.

How do I price my services as a beginner freelancer?

Start from your cost-based floor, compare with the market, and raise prices as reviews and samples build.

Do freelancers in Nigeria pay tax?

Yes. Freelance income of a Nigerian resident is taxed under personal income tax. The first ₦800,000 of taxable income is at 0% from 2026.
