Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How much cash should a shop keep overnight?

A float method for deciding how much cash stays in the shop after closing, with a labelled example, and why same-day banking usually wins.

The short answer

Keep only the opening float you need for the next morning, set from your own sales records, and bank or transfer the rest of the day's takings the same day. A common method is to hold enough small notes for the first few hours of change and early purchases, lock it away, and treat everything above it as money that should leave the shop before closing.

Why overnight cash is the problem

Cash in a shop at night is exposed to burglary, fire and staff theft with nobody there to notice. It is also often uninsured. Money insurance, where you have it, usually covers cash in a locked safe against burglary or housebreaking, not cash in a drawer or a bag under the counter; the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation's money insurance proposal form, for example, offers cover for money other than wages "in a locked safe or strongroom" against burglary and housebreaking only. So the question is not just how much you can afford to lose, but how much you can lose with no cover at all.

The float method

A float is the cash you start the day with. It exists so you can give change and pay small early costs before sales start coming in. Everything else is takings. Set your float like this:

  1. Look at a normal week. Note how much change you give in the first two or three hours, and any cash you must pay out early (a supplier, transport, a casual worker).
  2. Add a margin for a busier-than-usual morning, perhaps a quarter more.
  3. Hold it in small notes. A float of ₦1,000 notes cannot give change for a ₦1,200 sale.
  4. Write the float figure down and count it in at opening and out at closing.
  5. Everything above the float is takings that should be banked, transferred or taken home safely before night.

Worked example

Example only. A provisions shop takes about ₦180,000 a day, two thirds by transfer and one third in cash, so about ₦60,000 in cash. In the first three hours the owner gives about ₦12,000 in change and pays a ₦6,000 delivery charge in cash. Float: ₦12,000 + ₦6,000 = ₦18,000, plus a quarter for a busy morning (₦4,500) = ₦22,500, rounded to ₦25,000 in small notes. At closing she has ₦85,000 in cash: the ₦25,000 float plus ₦60,000 takings. She keeps ₦25,000 locked away and deposits ₦60,000 before closing time. If the shop were burgled, the most at risk would be ₦25,000, not ₦85,000.

The case for same-day deposit

  • Less to steal. Burglars and robbers gain little from a shop known to bank daily.
  • Fewer questions. Banked takings create a record of your sales, useful for loans, tax and disputes.
  • Less temptation. Staff theft is easier to spot when cash in hand should always equal the float.
  • No withdrawal limits on deposits. CBN cash limits apply to withdrawals; a CBN circular of December 2025 set a weekly cash-withdrawal limit of ₦500,000 for individuals and ₦5 million for corporates, with fees above that. Depositing during the week and drawing a modest float is easier to manage than hoarding cash.

Same-day banking has its own risk: carrying cash on the road. Vary your route and time, avoid announcing it, and use a nearby agent, a cash deposit machine or a branch during busy hours. Our guide to taking daily sales to the bank safely covers this.

If you must keep more overnight

Some traders close after banking hours or a long way from a bank. If you must hold takings overnight:

  • Use a proper safe that is fixed to the floor or wall, and keep the keys off the premises. Insurers ask about both.
  • Split cash: float in one place, takings in the safe.
  • Do not keep cash in the same place every night, and do not tell staff or neighbours where it is.
  • Move it out at opening the next morning, before the shop gets busy.
  • Consider whether some customers could pay by transfer instead, which reduces cash in the first place.

Reviewing the float

Your float is not fixed for ever. Review it monthly, and before busy periods such as festive seasons or school resumption, when more customers pay in cash and change runs out faster. If you often run short of change by mid-morning, the float is too small or in the wrong notes. If the float sits untouched most days, it is larger than it needs to be, and the extra is simply cash at risk. Keep a short record of float, takings and deposits each day; it makes shortages easy to spot and helps if you ever make an insurance claim.

If several people handle cash, make one person responsible for counting the float in and out, and have a second person sign the count.

Where Pryme fits

Moving more sales to transfer reduces cash in the shop. A Pryme Business Account gives you account details customers can pay into, a bank-transfer checkout (free), and separate accounts to keep the float, takings and savings apart. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. See also safe cash habits for market traders and cash flow for small businesses.

Questions people ask

How much cash should I leave in my shop at night?

Only the float you need to open the next morning, worked out from your own change and early payments, with the rest banked or transferred the same day.

What is a cash float in a shop?

The fixed amount of cash, in small notes, that a shop starts each day with to give change and pay small early costs. It is counted in and out daily.

Is cash kept in my shop covered by insurance?

Usually only if you have money insurance and keep it in a locked safe. Proposal forms such as NAIC's cover money in a safe against burglary and housebreaking, not cash left in a drawer.

Is there a limit on how much cash I can deposit in Nigeria?

The CBN limits weekly cash withdrawals, not deposits. Check with your bank for any cash-handling charges on large deposits.
