Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to lift an EFCC account freeze: letter, lawyer and court

Three routes out of an EFCC freeze: a lawyer's letter with source-of-funds evidence, a release from the investigators, or a court application.

The short answer

An EFCC freeze is lifted in one of three ways: the investigators withdraw their instruction after you (usually through a lawyer) explain and document the source of the funds; the freeze lapses because a stop order under section 7(6) of the Money Laundering Act 2022 ran past 72 hours with no court order; or a court discharges the freezing order or declares the freeze unlawful. Which route applies depends on whether a court order exists.

People often hear that they need 'clearance' from the EFCC. In practice that means the investigating team telling your bank, in writing, that it no longer needs the restriction. We found no published EFCC procedure for this, so the steps below rely on the law and the court decisions that describe how freezes end.

Step 1: establish which kind of freeze it is

Everything turns on one question: is there a court order?

SituationWhat it meansRoute out
Stop order, under 72 hours oldLawful under s7(6) of the Money Laundering Act 2022Engage the investigators quickly with evidence
Stop order, over 72 hours, no court orderThe Court of Appeal in UBA v Eje (2022) held such an order lapses and the bank must unfreezeLawyer's letter to the bank; court if it refuses
Federal High Court order under s7(8)Funds lawfully blocked while the order standsSatisfy the investigators, or apply to discharge the order
Freeze under s34 of the EFCC ActNeeds a subsisting court order (GTB v Adedamola, 2019)If no order, challenge; if an order, apply to discharge

Ask your bank in writing for the date of the restriction, the agency reference and any suit number. See how to find out why the EFCC froze your account.

Step 2: the written request

Whether or not a court order exists, a clear letter to the investigators is usually the fastest way out. It is best sent by a lawyer, and it should:

  • identify you, your account and the bank, and quote the agency reference
  • explain each inflow the investigators are likely to ask about, with dates and amounts
  • attach evidence: contracts, invoices, receipts, payslips, delivery records, chats, CAC documents for a business
  • offer to attend an interview with your lawyer
  • ask that, if the investigators are satisfied, they write to the bank to lift the restriction

If only part of the money is in question, ask whether the investigators will release the rest. A blanket freeze on an account where most funds are clearly explained is worth challenging.

Evidence by type of inflow

Where the money came fromEvidence that usually helps
Sale of goodsInvoice or receipt, chat agreeing the price, proof of delivery
Salary or contract workPayslips, employment letter or contract, the payer's details
Family supportMessages, the sender's ID and relationship, a pattern of earlier transfers
Sale of property or a carSale agreement, receipt, transfer of title documents
Business takingsSales records, POS settlement reports, CAC documents

Step 3: the 'clearance' letter

If the investigators accept your explanation, they instruct the bank to remove the restriction. Ask your bank to confirm in writing once it has received the instruction and acted on it. Keep that confirmation; it is useful if the account is ever queried again.

Step 4: the court route

If the freeze has run past its lawful basis, or the investigators do not respond, your lawyer can go to court:

  • No court order beyond 72 hours. In UBA v Eje (2022) LPELR-57973(CA), an account frozen from 8 March 2019 without a court order was held to have been frozen unlawfully; the Court of Appeal affirmed the order to unfreeze and found a breach of the customer's rights, though it set aside a ₦5,000,000 damages award (LawPavilion).
  • A court order exists. Your lawyer applies to the Federal High Court to discharge or vary it, using the agency's own affidavit and your evidence. Court orders must be obeyed until set aside (Ngere v Okuruket, cited by Templars).
  • Which court. Orders under s7(8) are Federal High Court orders. For claims against the bank itself, Templars notes the Federal and State High Courts share jurisdiction over banker-customer matters (Access Bank v Okpu, 2021).

Worked example: a partial release

Example only. Musa's business account holds ₦3,200,000 when it is frozen. Investigators are interested in one inflow of ₦900,000. His lawyer sends invoices and delivery records for that payment and statements showing the other ₦2,300,000 (₦3,200,000 − ₦900,000) came from regular customers. The investigators ask the bank to release the account but keep a lien on ₦900,000 while they check with the payer. Musa can use ₦2,300,000 and pursue the rest separately.

What to avoid

  • Paying anyone who promises to 'settle' the EFCC for you. Use a lawyer and official channels.
  • Moving money from other accounts to get around the freeze.
  • Ignoring an invitation from investigators. If you are the victim of a fraud rather than the subject, reporting fraud to the police and EFCC covers that route.
  • Missing court dates once a case is filed.

Also see your rights under the Money Laundering Act 2022 and how long a bank can keep your account frozen.

Where Pryme fits

Evidence of where money came from does most of the work in Step 2. A verifiable statement or receipt from receipts and statements, made with VerifyDoc.ai, lets an investigator confirm the document is genuine and unaltered.

Questions people ask

How do I get EFCC to unfreeze my account?

Through a lawyer, send the investigators a letter explaining the funds with evidence and ask them to instruct your bank to lift the freeze. If they do not, and the freeze lacks a court order past 72 hours, go to court.

What is EFCC clearance for a frozen account?

Informally, the investigators' written instruction to your bank that the restriction is no longer needed. We found no published EFCC procedure for it.

Can I sue EFCC for freezing my account?

Account holders have challenged freezes in court, as in UBA v Eje (2022), where the court ordered the account unfrozen. Outcomes and damages vary.

How long does it take to lift an EFCC freeze?

Our sources give no standard timeline. It depends on the investigation and whether a court order exists.
