Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Inheritance and lottery emails: the oldest advance-fee scam

A lawyer emails about a 'late client' with your surname, or a lottery you never entered. The 419 pattern, and why real estates never contact strangers.

The short answer

An email saying you can inherit a 'late client's' fortune because you share a surname, or that you have won a lottery you never entered, is advance-fee fraud: the money does not exist, and you will be asked to pay a string of fees to 'release' it. Real estates are handled by executors and courts and go to the people named in a will or entitled by law, not to strangers found by email.

The script, step by step

The inheritance email is one of the oldest frauds on the internet, and it changes very little. It usually runs like this:

  1. A "barrister", "bank auditor" or "private banker" writes from a free email address. A client with your surname died in an accident or a pandemic, leaving millions in dollars or euros in a bank account.
  2. No next of kin has come forward, and the bank will "confiscate" the funds to the government by a deadline.
  3. Because you share the surname, you can be presented as next of kin. The proceeds will be split, often 40/60 or 50/50.
  4. You are asked for your full name, address, phone number, occupation and a copy of your ID "to begin the paperwork".
  5. Documents arrive: a death certificate, a bank statement, a letter on a court or bank letterhead. All are forged.
  6. Fees begin. Lawyer's fee, affidavit fee, probate fee, "change of beneficiary certificate", tax clearance, "anti-terrorism certificate", transfer charge. Each one is the last, until the next.

The lottery version is shorter. You have won a large prize in an international or "online email" lottery. To claim it you must pay a processing fee, insurance or tax, or send bank details for the transfer. You never bought a ticket, because there was no lottery.

Why this is called 419

"419" is the popular Nigerian name for obtaining money by deception of this kind, and the specialised law that deals with it is the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006. Under section 1(3) of that Act, obtaining by false pretence carries 7 to 20 years' imprisonment with no option of a fine. Section 4 deals with fraudulent invitations to come to Nigeria, a step some versions use to lure victims to "sign documents", and section 11(1) says the High Court shall order restitution to the victim on conviction. Our explainer on advance-fee fraud and the law goes further. This is information, not legal advice.

Why no genuine estate contacts strangers by email

  • Estates have owners. When someone dies, their property passes under their will or under the law that applies to people who die without a will. Executors or administrators are appointed and supervised through the courts.
  • Banks do not hunt for strangers. Unclaimed accounts are dealt with under banking rules; banks do not ask lawyers to find someone with the same surname and invent a relationship.
  • Sharing a surname proves nothing. Being next of kin is about family relationship, not a name.
  • Being "presented" as next of kin is itself a fraud. The email is asking you to take part in deceiving a bank. Scammers count on that keeping you quiet.

If a relative of yours really has died, the route is the probate registry and the deceased's bank, which our guide to claiming a dead relative's bank account explains.

Newer versions of the same trick

  • The dying donor. A widow or businessman with a terminal illness wants to give a fortune to charity through you, for a fee to the lawyer.
  • The diplomat's trunk. A box of cash is held at an airport or with a "diplomatic courier"; you pay to clear it.
  • The compensation fund. A "UN", "World Bank" or "IMF" fund compensates scam victims, for a processing fee. It is the same scam targeting people who have already lost money.
  • The online romance. A partner abroad has inherited money but needs your help with fees to transfer it.

The fee ladder

Example only. A victim is asked for $250 for an affidavit, then $900 for a "change of beneficiary" document, then $1,850 for a "clearance certificate". That is $250 + $900 + $1,850 = $3,000 in three steps, and the next request is usually larger. The fees never stop because the fees are the business.

Signs in the email itself

What you seeWhat it tells you
Free email address for a "law firm" or "bank"No real firm handles estates from a personal mailbox
"Strictly confidential", "do not discuss with anyone"Secrecy stops you asking for advice
A deadline before "confiscation"Urgency to rush you past checking
You are asked for ID and bank details earlyIdentity theft, whether or not you pay
Any fee to release the moneyThe fee is the scam

What to do

  • Do not reply, even to say no. A reply confirms your address is active and invites the next attempt.
  • Mark the email as spam or phishing so your provider filters similar messages.
  • If you have sent your ID or bank details, tell your bank and watch for accounts or loans opened in your name.
  • If you have paid, stop all payments, keep every email and receipt, and report to the police and EFCC; see reporting fraud.
  • Ignore anyone who later offers to recover the money for a fee. The FTC warns that legitimate organisations never ask for money to help you get a refund; see recovery agent scams.

Older relatives and people in the diaspora are frequent targets; money transfer scams aimed at the diaspora covers related tricks.

Questions people ask

I got an email that a late client with my surname left millions, is it real?

No. This is the classic advance-fee or 419 scam. Real estates go to beneficiaries named in a will or by law, handled by executors and courts.

What happens if I reply to an inheritance scam email?

You will be asked for personal details and then a series of fees. Replying also confirms your email is active. Do not respond.

Is email lottery winning real in Nigeria?

You cannot win a lottery you did not enter. Any email asking you to pay a fee to claim lottery winnings is a scam.

What is the punishment for 419 in Nigeria?

Under section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act 2006, obtaining by false pretence carries 7 to 20 years' imprisonment without the option of a fine.
