Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Safety

Taking daily sales to the bank safely: routes and timing

How to carry the day's takings to the bank without becoming a target: varying routes and times, agent deposits, cash-deposit machines and insurance.

The short answer

Vary the day, time and route you take cash to the bank, carry it out of sight and in more than one place, and never stop on the way. Where you can, shorten the trip with a nearby bank agent or a cash-deposit machine, keep the slip, and check that your account tier accepts the amount: a Fidelity Bank Tier 1 account, for example, caps a single deposit at ₦50,000.

Why the bank run is the risky moment

Cash at a shop is spread across a drawer, a pouch and a box. On the way to the bank it is all in one bag, carried by one person, often at the same time every day. Anyone who has watched the shop for a week knows when that is. Most of the habits below are about breaking that pattern and shortening the time the cash is moving.

Routes and timing

  • Change the time. Do not go at exactly the same hour each day. Mix morning, midday and afternoon runs.
  • Change the route. Have two or three ways to the bank and rotate them. Avoid quiet shortcuts.
  • Change the person, if you can. A trusted relative or supervisor sharing the run makes the pattern harder to read.
  • Do not stop. No buying recharge cards, no greeting friends, no detour to the market on the way there.
  • Go with someone for larger sums, walking a few steps apart.
  • Tell one person at the shop when you leave and call when you arrive.

How to carry the cash

  • Use an ordinary bag, not a bank-branded pouch or a cash bag that looks like one.
  • Split the money: most in an inner pocket or under clothing, a smaller amount in the bag.
  • Count and band the notes at the shop, in private, and fill the deposit slip before you leave. Counting at the banking hall shows strangers what you carry.
  • If someone threatens you, hand over the bag. Cash can be replaced; you cannot.

Shorter trips: agents and deposit machines

The less distance the cash travels, the lower the risk. Two options can cut the walk:

OptionGood forWhat to check
Bank agent (POS or agency outlet) nearbySmall, frequent depositsThat the agent belongs to a known bank network; get a printed slip; the agent's float may limit how much they can take
Cash-deposit machine at a branchDeposits outside banking hours or without a queueThat your bank's machine accepts your account; keep the slip; count before you feed it
Banking hallLarge sums, coins, mixed notesQueue time; teller stamp on your slip

Keep every slip until the money shows on your statement, not just on an alert. If a deposit does not appear, see cash deposit not credited. Note that agents are not a good way to get large sums back out: a CBN circular reported in December 2024 caps POS agent cash-out at ₦100,000 per customer per day.

Check your account can take the deposit

Low-tier accounts limit deposits. Fidelity Bank's FAQs, for example, list Tier 1 with a maximum single deposit of ₦50,000 and a maximum balance of ₦300,000, and Tier 2 with ₦100,000 and ₦500,000; Tier 3 removes those caps. Other banks set their own figures. A trader banking ₦150,000 a day into a Tier 1 account will have deposits refused or split. Upgrade the account, or use a business account, before it becomes a problem.

Deposit insurance also matters if you hold large balances. The NDIC says it covers up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at deposit money banks and ₦2,000,000 at microfinance banks; see NDIC insurance limits.

Insuring cash in transit

Money insurance can cover cash on its way to the bank. A proposal form from the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation shows what an insurer will ask before covering it:

  • How money is carried, what precautions you take and how many staff are in charge of it.
  • The distance to the bank and to any other place you carry money.
  • A limit for any one loss, and the estimated total amount at risk over the policy year.

The same form excludes shortages from error or omission, so counting before you leave matters for a claim as well. See money insurance for shops.

Worked example

Example only. A shop banks ₦100,000 a day, six days a week, for 50 weeks. The estimated amount at risk in transit for the year is ₦100,000 × 6 × 50 = ₦30,000,000, and the limit for any one loss is the largest single run, say ₦250,000 after a holiday weekend. Those are the two figures the form asks for.

What to check first

  1. Has the run followed the same time or route more than twice this week?
  2. Is the cash counted, banded and the slip filled before leaving?
  3. Does your account tier accept today's amount?
  4. Is there a nearer agent or deposit machine you trust?
  5. Does someone at the shop know you have left, and expect your call?

Where Pryme fits

The safest cash run is the one you do not need to make. Payments by transfer into a Pryme Business Account go straight to the account, and bank-transfer checkout is free. See also safe cash habits for traders.

Questions people ask

What is the safest time to take cash to the bank?

There is no single safe time; the safest pattern is an unpredictable one. Vary the hour, the route and, if possible, the person.

Can I deposit large cash at a POS agent?

You can deposit through many agents, but their float may limit how much they accept. Get a printed slip and check your statement. For large sums the banking hall is usually better.

Why was my cash deposit refused?

A common reason is the account tier. Fidelity Bank, for example, caps a single Tier 1 deposit at ₦50,000. Ask your bank to upgrade the account.

Does insurance cover money stolen on the way to the bank?

A money insurance policy can cover cash in transit up to a set limit per loss. Insurers ask how you carry it and how far, so tell them accurately.
