Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Home office expenses for a Canadian freelancer

When a Canadian freelancer can claim business-use-of-home expenses, how to work out the share, and why the claim cannot create a loss.

The short answer

A self-employed person in Canada can deduct a share of home costs only if the workspace is the principal place of business, or is used only for business and regularly to meet clients. The share is worked out on a reasonable basis, usually floor area, cut down further if the room is also used for personal life, and the claim cannot create or increase a business loss; anything unused carries forward to the next year (CRA, modified August 2026).

The two tests you must pass

The CRA sets the conditions on its business-use-of-home page for Form T2125, last modified 31 August 2026. You can claim if you meet one of these:

  1. the work space is your principal place of business; or
  2. you use the space only to earn business income, and you use it on a regular and ongoing basis to meet clients, customers or patients.

For most freelancers serving clients in Nigeria the first test is the relevant one. If you design, write, code or edit for a Lagos agency from a spare room in Mississauga, and you have no other office, that room is your principal place of business. Clients on video calls do not usually make the second test easier, because the CRA's wording is about meeting clients at the space.

These rules are for self-employed income reported on T2125. Employees working from home follow a different route on their employment income, which this article does not cover.

What you can include

If you rentIf you own
A share of rentA share of mortgage interest (not the capital repaid)
A share of heat, electricity and home insurance you payA share of heat, electricity, home insurance and property taxes
Cleaning supplies, by the same shareCleaning supplies, by the same share
Costs that relate only to the workspaceCapital cost allowance on the business part of the home, with care (see below)

Costs that are wholly for the business, such as a separate business phone line or software, are ordinary business expenses on their own lines of T2125 and are not split by floor area. The CRA says an expense you claim as business-use-of-home must not also appear elsewhere on the form.

Working out your share

The CRA asks for a reasonable basis, such as the area of the workspace divided by the area of the home. If the room is also used for personal life, you reduce it again by the hours: business hours per day divided by 24. If you only run the business for part of the week or year, reduce the claim to match.

Worked example

Example only, figures invented. Ada rents a two-bedroom flat in Ottawa of 900 square feet and uses a 90-square-foot bedroom only as her office, where she does all her work for clients in Nigeria. Her share is 90 ÷ 900 = 10%.

Annual costTotal paidBusiness share at 10%
RentC$24,000C$2,400
ElectricityC$900C$90
Tenant insuranceC$300C$30
TotalC$25,200C$2,520

If instead the room were a guest room she used for work 8 hours a day, the share would be 10% × 8 ÷ 24, or about 3.3%, so roughly C$840 on the same costs.

The limit: no loss from your home

The deduction cannot be more than your net business income before these expenses, and it cannot create or increase a business loss. Using the example, if Ada's net income from her Nigerian clients before home costs was only C$1,800 in her first year, she can deduct C$1,800 that year and carry the other C$720 forward to the next fiscal period, where the same conditions apply. This matters in a slow year, when a client in Nigeria pays late and your income dips.

A warning for homeowners

The CRA notes that if you claim capital cost allowance on the business part of your home and later sell it, capital gain and recapture rules apply to that part. Many homeowners therefore leave CCA out of the claim. Get advice before claiming it, because the effect shows up years later on a sale.

Situations Nigerian freelancers often ask about

Working from a shared flat
Use your share of the costs you actually pay, then apply the workspace share to that. Costs paid by flatmates are not yours to claim.
Months spent working from Lagos
If you spend part of the year working away from the Canadian home, reduce the claim for the period the space was not used for the business.
A desk in the living room
A corner of a shared room can count, but the hours-based reduction applies, and the space must still meet one of the two CRA tests.
Starting the business mid-year
Count only the months the business operated. The CRA says to reduce the claim if you run the business for only part of the year.

What to keep

  • a simple floor plan with the room measurements;
  • the lease or mortgage interest statement, utility bills and insurance invoices;
  • a note of the hours the room is used for work, if it is shared; and
  • your T2125 workings, kept for six years from the end of the tax year (CRA records guidance, modified August 2026).

Where Pryme fits

Clean separation between business and personal money makes a home office claim easier to back up. A Pryme Business Account, opened from Canada, keeps your Nigerian client income apart from household spending, and the Finance agent can help prepare categorised records for you to review. For the rest of the return, see self-employed tax on Nigerian client income and records for a CRA review.

Questions people ask

Can I claim home office expenses if I also work at a client's office?

Only if your home workspace still meets a CRA test: it is your principal place of business, or it is used only for business and regularly to meet clients. If most of your work happens elsewhere, the first test may fail.

Can I claim my whole internet bill?

Not usually. A home internet connection used for personal life too is split on a reasonable basis. Costs used wholly for the business go on their own T2125 lines.

What if my home office expenses are more than my income?

The excess cannot create or increase a business loss. It carries forward to the next fiscal period and can be used then under the same conditions.

Should I claim CCA on my home?

The CRA warns that claiming CCA on the business part of your home brings capital gain and recapture rules into play on a sale. Get advice before claiming it.
