Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Incorporating your freelance work in Canada: when it pays

When income from Nigerian and Canadian clients makes a corporation worthwhile, what it costs to run one, and the traps that cancel the tax benefit.

The short answer

Incorporating pays mainly when you earn more than you need to live on and can leave profit in the company, because a Canadian-controlled private corporation pays a low small business rate on active business income (federal 9% plus, in Ontario, 2.2% from 1 July 2026). If you spend everything you earn, the saving largely disappears once you pay yourself, and you take on extra filing costs. A corporation with one client that is really your employer may also be taxed as a personal services business.

What changes when you incorporate

As a sole proprietor, the profit from your Nigerian and Canadian clients is added to your personal income and taxed at your marginal rate in the same year. A corporation is a separate taxpayer. It pays corporate tax on its profit, and you pay personal tax only on what you take out as salary or dividends. The benefit is the gap between the two rates on money you leave inside.

Rate (CRA, modified 21 Oct 2026)FederalOntarioBritish Columbia
Small business rate (CCPC, active business income)9%2.2% (3.2% before 1 Jul 2026)2%
General rate15%11.5%12%
Business limitSet federally; some provinces follow it$500,000$500,000

In Ontario that makes a combined small business rate of 11.2% (9% + 2.2%) on qualifying income from 1 July 2026. Alberta and Quebec collect their own corporate tax and are not in the CRA's provincial table, so check their rates directly.

Worked example: the deferral (example figures)

Tunde, a developer in Ottawa, makes $150,000 profit a year from clients in Lagos and Toronto and lives on $90,000. Through a corporation, the $60,000 he does not need is taxed at 11.2%, which is $6,720, leaving $53,280 in the company. If his own marginal rate on that slice were, as an example, 43%, he would pay $25,800 on it personally. The difference, $19,080, is not a permanent saving: it is tax deferred until the money comes out as dividends, when personal tax applies. The value lies in investing it inside the company meanwhile, or taking it out in a lower-income year.

Now take Kemi, who earns $70,000 and spends it all. She would have to pay almost everything out each year, so the deferral is small and the running costs below may outweigh it.

What a corporation costs to run

  • Incorporation. Federal incorporation online is $200 with Corporations Canada; Ontario incorporation is $300 (Ontario fee page, updated 29 Sep 2026).
  • Annual returns. A federal annual return is $12, filed within 60 days of the anniversary date; Ontario's is $0 but still has to be filed.
  • Corporate tax return. A T2 return is due within six months of year-end, with any balance due two months after year-end (three for some CCPCs claiming the small business deduction). Most people pay an accountant for this; ask for a quote.
  • Separate accounts and payroll. The company needs its own bank account and records. Paying yourself a salary means payroll registration and T4 slips by the last day of February.
  • Directors. A federal corporation needs at least 25% resident Canadian directors, and at least one if it has fewer than four directors (Corporations Canada).

Questions to answer before you incorporate

  1. How much of this year's profit will you leave in the company rather than spend? That figure, not your total income, drives the benefit.
  2. Is your income steady enough to justify yearly accounting and filing costs for several years?
  3. Will you pay yourself a salary, dividends or a mix, and what does that do to your CPP, RRSP room and any mortgage application that asks for proof of income?
  4. Do you have, or plan to have, more than one real client, so the company is a business and not a wrapper for one job?
  5. Will anyone else own shares, and where do they live?
  6. Which province will you incorporate in, or federally, and will you need to register in other provinces where you work?

If most answers point to spending everything, one client and uncertain income, staying a sole proprietor and registering a business name may be the better fit for now.

Three traps that cancel the benefit

  1. One client who is really your employer. If you would be that client's employee but for the corporation, the income can be a personal services business and lose the small business rate. See personal services business risk with one Nigerian client.
  2. Non-resident control. A CCPC must not be controlled, directly or indirectly, by non-residents (CRA). If you plan to give relatives in Nigeria shares, take advice first; see CCPC status with a Nigerian shareholder.
  3. Pension and benefits. Dividends are not salary, so a dividend-only plan means no CPP contributions on that income and less CPP later. Decide your salary and dividend mix with that in mind.

Nigerian withholding tax does not go away when you incorporate. A Nigerian company paying your corporation for professional services still generally deducts tax at the non-resident rate (PwC lists 10%), and your corporation claims any credit, not you.

Where Pryme fits

A corporation can open a Pryme Business Account holding naira, US dollars, pounds and euros with local details for each, so Nigerian clients pay the company, not you personally. The Finance agent prepares invoices and reconciliations for approval, which keeps company and personal money apart. See federal or provincial incorporation for the next step.

Questions people ask

At what income should a freelancer incorporate in Canada?

There is no official threshold. It pays mainly when you can leave a meaningful amount of profit in the company each year; if you spend everything, running costs can outweigh the deferral.

What is the small business tax rate in Ontario in 2026?

The CRA lists a federal 9% small business rate and an Ontario lower rate of 2.2% from 1 July 2026, on income up to the $500,000 business limit.

How much does it cost to incorporate in Canada?

Federal online incorporation is $200 and Ontario incorporation is $300, as at October 2026. Accounting fees for the yearly T2 return come on top.

Do Nigerian clients still deduct withholding tax if I incorporate?

Yes, generally. The payer applies the non-resident rate to your corporation, and the corporation keeps the receipt to claim any credit.
