Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Getting Nigerian bank OTPs while living in Canada

Roaming, eSIM, email OTP or an app token: the four ways to keep receiving Nigerian bank codes in Canada, what each costs and where it breaks.

The short answer

You have four routes: keep your Nigerian line roaming so SMS codes arrive; switch to email OTP where your bank offers it (FirstBank has an Email OTP indemnity form); move to your bank's in-app soft token (GTBank's GT eToken, for example), which needs no signal once set up; or use a hardware token where your bank still issues one. Set the token up before you leave Nigeria if you can, because several activation routes rely on your Nigerian number.

Why codes stop arriving

Most Nigerian banks send one-time passwords by SMS to the phone number on your account and BVN. In Canada, that SMS only arrives if your Nigerian SIM is switched on and roaming on a Canadian network, and if the network's roaming agreement delivers it. Codes can arrive late or not at all, and the bank app then refuses a transfer or a new-device login.

Option 1: roaming on your Nigerian line

Keeping the line roaming is the least change, but it costs money and is only as reliable as the roaming partner. As listed in October 2026:

  • MTN TravelPass is a subscription roaming plan for over 50 countries on selected networks, bought on *312*6# or the app; plans start at ₦5,000 for a day.
  • Glo and Airtel sell their own roaming bundles and publish country lists; check that Canada and your Canadian partner network are covered.

Check each network's own coverage list for Canada and its current prices before buying.

Option 2: email OTP

Some banks will send codes by email if you ask. FirstBank's FAQ says that if SMS OTPs do not arrive when you set up its app, you can request OTP by email through an Email OTP indemnity form. The indemnity matters: you accept the risk that your email is secure. Use a strong password and an authenticator app on that email account. Ask your own bank whether it offers this; not all do.

Option 3: your bank's soft token

A soft token is a code generator inside the bank's app. Once activated it works offline, so roaming does not matter. GTBank's GT eToken page describes activation in three ways: with your card (last 8 digits and PIN), with a hardware token OTP, or with a 9-digit code from GTConnect on 080 2900 2900 or 080 3900 3900; you then create a 4-digit PIN. Activation may still send one SMS or need a call, so do it while your Nigerian line works.

Option 4: a hardware token

A small device that shows a code. It needs no phone at all, but it has to be collected, usually at a branch, and a lost token means a replacement. Banks are moving towards app tokens, so ask whether yours still issues them.

RouteWorks without roamingMain weak point
SMS on roaming SIMNoCost; patchy delivery on some partner networks
Email OTPYesYour email becomes the key; indemnity shifts risk to you
Soft token in appYes, once activeActivation may need your Nigerian number
Hardware tokenYesCollection and loss

Steps before you leave, or on your next trip

  1. List every Nigerian bank and app you use and how each sends codes.
  2. Activate each bank's soft token while your Nigerian SIM is in your phone.
  3. Ask about email OTP where no soft token exists.
  4. Put your Nigerian number on Keep My Number (MTN and Airtel offer it for numbers abroad), so it is not recycled while you are away.
  5. Note that changing the phone number linked to your BVN is restricted; a 2026 CBN draft on charges proposed allowing it once in a lifetime. See changing your BVN phone number from Canada.

Example: two banks, one trip home

Example only: Ada lives in Toronto and has a GTBank account and a FirstBank account. On a December visit to Lagos, with her MTN SIM back in her phone, she activates the GT eToken using her card details, and asks FirstBank about the Email OTP indemnity form. She then subscribes to Keep My Number for two years so the line is not recycled. Back in Canada, the GTBank token works without signal, and FirstBank codes reach her by email if the bank approves the form.

If your number goes dead unexpectedly while you are in Canada, call the bank: it can be a sign of a SIM swap. Read authenticator app vs SMS codes for why app-based codes are harder to steal. For an eSIM route, see moving your Nigerian number to an eSIM.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme was built for this problem: it does not use SMS codes. Security runs on an authenticator app and a transaction PIN, so you approve payments from Toronto without your Nigerian line. A Personal Account opened from Canada holds NGN alongside USD, GBP and EUR, and you can send to Nigerian accounts with the rate and fee shown first.

Questions people ask

Why am I not receiving OTPs from my Nigerian bank in Canada?

SMS codes only arrive if your Nigerian SIM is on and roaming on a Canadian network, and delivery depends on the roaming partner. A soft token or email OTP avoids this.

Can Nigerian banks send OTP to email?

Some can. FirstBank offers email OTP through an Email OTP indemnity form, per its FAQ. Ask your bank.

Does the GTBank token work abroad?

The GT eToken is in the app and generates codes without signal once activated. Activation uses your card details, a hardware token OTP or a code from GTConnect.

Can I change my BVN phone number to a Canadian number?

BVN phone changes go through your bank and are restricted. Ask your bank first, and see our guide on changing a BVN phone number from Canada.
