Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Form 1042-S for payments to Nigerian contractors

When a US company must withhold and file Form 1042-S for a Nigerian payee: US-source work, licences, the no-treaty rate, deadlines and copies.

The short answer

Form 1042-S applies when a US withholding agent pays US-source income, such as pay for work physically done in the US or royalties for US use, to a foreign person. With no US income tax treaty with Nigeria, the general 30% rate is not reduced by treaty. Forms 1042-S for 2026 are due to the IRS and the recipient by 15 March 2027.

What Form 1042-S is for

Form 1042-S reports income paid to foreign persons that is subject to chapter 3 withholding. The IRS instructions for Form 1042-S (2026) say every withholding agent must file it, and the definition of withholding agent is broad: if your US company controls the payment, you are likely it. Publication 515 says most types of US-source income received by a foreign person are subject to US tax of 30%, unless a treaty reduces it.

For Nigerian payees there is no treaty reduction to claim. The IRS list of US income tax treaties (reviewed 3 Jan 2026) includes Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia in Africa, and not Nigeria. A W-8BEN from a Nigerian payee documents foreign status; it cannot claim a treaty rate that does not exist.

When it applies to a Nigerian contractor

For most remote work it does not. Pay for services is generally sourced where the work is physically done, so a contractor working only from Lagos is usually paid foreign-source income outside the regime; see whether you need a 1099. These are the cases that bring a Nigerian payee into it:

SituationLikely US-source?What to do
Contractor flies to Houston for a two-week on-site projectYes, for the US daysApportion the fee; withhold and report the US part
You license a Nigerian musician's track for a US advertRoyalties for US use usually areWithhold at 30% and file 1042-S
Nigerian speaker paid for a talk delivered in New YorkYesWithhold and report
Developer in Lagos builds your app remotelyUsually noKeep W-8BEN and records; no 1042-S
Nigerian company provides customer support from AbujaUsually noKeep W-8BEN-E and records

The 1042-S instructions include a category described as "compensation for independent personal services performed in the United States", which is the line an on-site visit falls under.

Worked example

Example only. A Georgia company pays a Lagos engineer $20,000 for a project: 18 working days in Lagos and 2 working days on site in Atlanta, 20 days in total. On a time basis, the US-source part is 2/20 x $20,000 = $2,000. Withholding at 30% is $600, so the engineer receives $19,400 and the company deposits $600 with the IRS and reports $2,000 of gross income and $600 withheld on Form 1042-S. Time apportionment is one common approach; how your contract describes the work matters, so agree the method with your adviser before paying.

Deadlines and copies

  • Forms 1042-S for 2026 are due by 15 March 2027 (Publication 515 and the 1042-S instructions); if 15 March falls on a weekend or holiday, the next business day.
  • Copy A goes to the IRS with Form 1042-T if filed on paper; Copies B, C and D go to the recipient.
  • E-filing is required if you must file 10 or more information returns in the year.
  • You also file the annual Form 1042 return summarising the tax withheld; check its current due date in the Form 1042 instructions.

Documenting the US days

Because the answer turns on where work is done, the evidence you keep is the defence. Before a Nigerian contractor travels for your project, agree in writing which tasks will be done in the US and for how many days, and whether the fee is split or the US part is priced separately. Keep the travel dates, the agenda or site log for the US days, and the invoice showing how the fee was divided. If you reimburse flights and hotels, ask your adviser whether those reimbursements count as part of the US-source payment, because how they are paid and documented can change the answer. A clean file also helps the contractor if the Nigerian tax authority later asks why part of their fee was taxed in the US.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Withholding 30% on all payments to Nigeria "to be safe". Over-withholding on foreign-source pay costs the contractor money they then have to reclaim.
  2. Paying a US visit fee with no withholding because the contractor "lives in Nigeria". Residence does not decide source; where the work is done does.
  3. Accepting a W-8BEN claiming a treaty rate for Nigeria. There is no US-Nigeria income tax treaty.
  4. Forgetting the contractor may also owe Nigerian tax. A Nigerian resident is taxed on worldwide income, and US tax withheld may or may not be creditable in Nigeria; that is their adviser's question, but say so in your onboarding note.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not file IRS forms. A Pryme Business Account lets you pay the net amount in naira or dollars and keep a clear record, and the Finance agent can prepare the payment split for a person to approve. See also records to keep.

Questions people ask

Do I file a 1042-S for a contractor in Nigeria?

Only if you paid US-source income, for example for work physically done in the US or royalties for US use. Remote work done entirely in Nigeria is generally foreign-source and outside 1042-S.

Is there a US tax treaty with Nigeria?

No. The IRS treaty list (reviewed January 2026) does not include Nigeria, so the general 30% rate applies to US-source income without treaty reduction.

When is Form 1042-S due?

By 15 March of the following year to the IRS and the recipient; 2026 forms are due 15 March 2027.

What is the withholding rate for a Nigerian payee?

30% on most US-source income paid to a foreign person, with no treaty rate available for Nigeria.
