Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Fixed deposits in Nigeria for US residents: what to know

How US residents open naira or dollar fixed deposits in Nigeria, what banks say about tenor and early exit, and how the interest goes on a US return.

The short answer

Most Nigerian banks need you to hold an account with them, usually with a BVN, before you can book a fixed deposit, and the rate is agreed at booking rather than published. For a US resident, the interest is part of worldwide income, Nigerian withholding tax may be deducted first, and the account counts towards FBAR and possibly Form 8938.

A fixed deposit in Nigeria is simple at home: you lock money for a set tenor and the bank pays interest at the end. From the US it gets more layered. You have to satisfy the bank's account-opening rules from abroad, decide between naira and dollars, and then report the interest and the account itself to the IRS and FinCEN. Here is what the banks' own pages say, and what the US side asks of you. Tax points are information, not advice.

What Nigerian banks say about fixed deposits

Bank (own page)TenorRateEarly exit and other terms
Zenith Bank FAQsMinimum 30 daysAgreed at bookingBooked and liquidated by signed letter of authority; simple interest; 10% withholding tax
Standard Chartered Nigeria30 to 365 days (USD up to 360)Not shown on pageNaira and foreign currency; early liquidation forfeits "20% or more" of interest; existing account holders aged 18+

None of these pages publishes a fixed deposit rate, so any figure you see online is a snapshot. Ask the bank for the rate in writing on the day you book, and ask what happens at maturity: Standard Chartered, for example, says deposits roll over automatically for a similar tenor at the "prevailing system rate" unless you instruct otherwise. Zenith's FAQs say you can open an account online from abroad if you have a BVN. If you do not, see the NRBVN guide.

Naira or dollar deposit?

A naira deposit usually pays a higher nominal rate, but you carry currency risk: if the naira weakens against the dollar over the tenor, your dollar result shrinks. A domiciliary (dollar) deposit removes that risk but pays less. From 1 January 2026, banks began deducting 10% withholding tax on all foreign-currency deposit interest, according to BusinessDay's report of an Access Bank notice citing the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Our currency-adjusted yield comparison shows how quickly depreciation can wipe out a naira premium.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

Tunde books ₦10,000,000 for 365 days at an example rate of 18% simple interest. Gross interest is ₦1,800,000. If 10% withholding tax is deducted, ₦180,000 goes to the tax authority and ₦1,620,000 is credited. On his US return he reports the gross interest converted to dollars, and may be able to claim a foreign tax credit for the ₦180,000 if it qualifies.

The US side: three separate obligations

  1. Income tax. IRS Publication 54 says US citizens and residents are generally taxed on worldwide income, expressed in US dollars. Interest from a Nigerian deposit is reported like US bank interest.
  2. Schedule B. Its instructions require a Schedule B if taxable interest is over $1,500, and also whenever you had a financial interest in a foreign account. Line 7a asks about foreign accounts.
  3. FBAR and Form 8938. If all your foreign accounts together exceeded $10,000 at any time in the year, an FBAR is due. Form 8938 applies above higher thresholds (for a single filer in the US, more than $50,000 on 31 December or $75,000 at any time).

On credits: the IRS foreign tax credit page says the credit is generally for foreign income taxes, and that the amount withheld is not necessarily the amount that qualifies. Keep the bank's withholding tax certificate or the line on your statement showing what was deducted. More on interest from Nigerian government paper is in our guide on T-bill interest and US tax.

Records worth keeping from day one

US reporting is far easier if you collect the paperwork as you go rather than at tax time. For each deposit, keep the booking confirmation showing amount, tenor and agreed rate; the maturity advice showing gross interest and any tax deducted; and a statement showing the highest balance in the calendar year, which you need for the FBAR. Note the date interest was credited, because your preparer needs it to place the interest in the right tax year: a 365-day deposit booked in March pays out in the following calendar year, and if the bank pays interest upfront, as Standard Chartered offers, the timing is different again. Finally, write down the exchange rate you used to convert each figure to dollars, so your preparer can follow your workings and you can repeat them next year.

What to check first

  • Whether you can open the account remotely, and which documents the bank needs (BVN, ID, proof of address).
  • The exact rate, tenor and early-exit penalty, in writing.
  • Whether interest is paid upfront or at maturity, and what happens on rollover.
  • Whether withholding tax will be deducted, and how you get proof of it.
  • Deposit insurance: NDIC cover applies up to the applicable limit for each insured bank.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme offers Savings Boxes for naira held in Nigeria: Flexible, Fixed, Investment and Interest-free. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, and rates are shown in the app before you commit. The US reporting rules above still apply. See Savings Boxes and multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I open a Nigerian fixed deposit while living in the US?

Often yes, if you already have an account with that bank or can open one remotely. Zenith's FAQs say online account opening from abroad works if you have a BVN. Each bank sets its own documents.

Is interest on a Nigerian fixed deposit taxable in the US?

For US citizens and residents, yes: worldwide income is generally taxable. Report the gross interest in dollars and consider a foreign tax credit for qualifying Nigerian tax withheld.

Do Nigerian banks deduct tax on fixed deposit interest?

Zenith's FAQs mention 10% withholding tax on fixed deposits, and from 1 January 2026 banks deduct 10% on foreign-currency deposit interest, as reported by BusinessDay.

What if I break a fixed deposit early?

Banks set their own penalty. Standard Chartered says early liquidation forfeits 20% or more of the interest. Ask your bank before booking.
