Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Fish farming loan in Nigeria: who lends and on what terms

Who lends to catfish and fish farmers in Nigeria, what your business plan must prove, and why repayment should follow your harvest cycle.

The short answer

Fish farmers in Nigeria usually borrow from the Bank of Agriculture, commercial banks’ SME desks, microfinance banks, cooperatives or feed suppliers offering trade credit. Lenders want a plan that shows stocking numbers, survival rate, feed cost and a buyer for the harvest. The single most important term is tenure: a loan that demands monthly repayments before your first harvest can sink a healthy farm.

Catfish and tilapia farming attract many first-time agribusiness owners because ponds and tanks can be set up on small plots and demand for fish is steady. The difficulty is cash flow. Juveniles, feed, water treatment and labour must be paid for weeks before any fish is sold. This guide explains who lends for fish farming, what they look for, and how to make sure the repayment schedule fits the way a fish farm earns money.

Who lends to fish farmers

Lender typeWhat to expectWatch for
Bank of Agriculture (BOA)Government-owned development lender for the agricultural value chain. Its FAQ says applicants must be between 18 and 60 at application and hold a valid government ID (as at Oct 2026).Its public pages do not publish rates, tenors or collateral rules; ask the branch for the written terms.
Commercial banks (SME desks)Working-capital and asset loans for registered businesses with a record of sales.Usually need a trading history. Sterling Bank’s small business facility, for example, lists 3 years in business and turnover of at least ₦2m a month (as at Oct 2026).
Microfinance banksSmaller loans, often with group or individual guarantors.Weekly or monthly repayments that may start immediately.
Cooperatives and farmer associationsMember loans funded by savings, sometimes linked to bulk input purchases.Usually require a period of saving before you can borrow.
Feed and input suppliersTrade credit: feed now, pay at harvest or after a set period.Often priced into the feed; ask for the cash price to compare.

Loan apps rarely suit fish farming. Their tenors are short and their pricing assumes quick repayment, which is the opposite of a grow-out cycle. If you do use one, check the lender on the FCCPC approved list first; see how to check a loan app is registered.

What your business plan must show

Lenders who know aquaculture ask the same questions, because these numbers decide whether a farm repays. A plan that answers them clearly gets a faster decision.

  • Capacity: number and size of ponds or tanks, and how many fish you stock per cycle.
  • Survival rate: the share of juveniles you expect to reach market size, based on your own records or a realistic estimate.
  • Feed plan: feed is normally the largest cost. Show the brand, quantity per cycle and the price you have been quoted.
  • Cycle length: how long from stocking to harvest for your species and stocking size.
  • Buyer: who takes the harvest (processors, smokers, restaurants, market wholesalers) and at what price basis.
  • Water and power: borehole, flow-through or recirculating system, and back-up power for pumps and aerators.
  • Records: bank statements and sales records from past cycles. A lender trusts two documented harvests more than a projection.

Why tenure should match the production cycle

A fish farm earns most of its money on harvest day. A loan that asks for equal monthly instalments from the first month forces you to repay from other income while the fish are still growing. Ask for one of these structures instead:

  • Moratorium: no principal repayments until after harvest, sometimes with interest still accruing or paid monthly.
  • Bullet repayment: the full amount plus interest falls due at the end of the cycle.
  • Cycle-linked instalments: for farms that harvest in batches, repayments set for the weeks after each batch is sold.

Worked example: same loan, two schedules

Example only, with an illustrative rate. A farmer borrows ₦2,000,000 for a six-month grow-out cycle at an example flat charge of 3% a month. Interest over six months is ₦360,000, so the total to repay is ₦2,360,000.

Monthly instalments from month 1Bullet repayment at month 6
Payment each month₦393,333 for six monthsNothing until harvest
Paid before any fish is soldAbout ₦1,966,667 (five instalments)₦0
Paid at harvest₦393,333₦2,360,000
Total repaid₦2,360,000₦2,360,000

The cost is the same, but under the first schedule the farmer must find almost ₦2m from other sources while the fish grow. If the harvest sells for, say, ₦3,400,000, both schedules leave about ₦1,040,000 before other costs; only the bullet schedule is affordable without outside cash. Ask any lender for its rate in writing and compare it with the averages the CBN publishes: the average maximum lending rate in its money market indicators was 29.20% a year for August 2026 (CBN, checked Oct 2026). Rates change, so check the current figure on the CBN page.

What to check before you sign

  1. Is the rate stated per month, per year, flat or on a reducing balance? Convert it so you can compare; see APR vs flat fee.
  2. Which fees are taken upfront (management, insurance, legal) and are they deducted from the amount you receive?
  3. When is the first repayment due, and is there a written moratorium?
  4. What happens if mortality is high or the harvest is late? Ask whether restructuring is possible and what it costs.
  5. What collateral or guarantor is required, and could farm equipment be registered as security?

Poultry farmers face a similar cycle problem; our guide to poultry farm loans covers how lenders treat layers and broilers, and smallholder farmer loans covers wider agricultural schemes.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer fish farming loans. A Pryme Business Account can keep farm income separate from personal money, which produces the clean statements lenders ask for, and a verifiable statement from VerifyDoc.ai lets a lender confirm it has not been altered.

Questions people ask

Which bank gives loans for fish farming in Nigeria?

The Bank of Agriculture lends across the agricultural value chain, and commercial banks lend to registered farm businesses through their SME desks. Microfinance banks and cooperatives also lend to fish farmers. Terms differ, so ask each for its written rate, fees and repayment schedule.

Can I get a fish farming loan without collateral?

Some SME and microfinance products are unsecured but ask for guarantors, a trading history or minimum turnover. A first-time farmer with no records will find unsecured credit hard; cooperatives and supplier credit are often the realistic start.

How long should a catfish farming loan be?

At least as long as your grow-out cycle plus time to sell the harvest. Ask for a moratorium or bullet repayment so you are not repaying before the fish are sold.

What documents do I need for a fish farm loan?

Typically ID, a business plan with stocking, feed and sales figures, bank statements, CAC registration for a business, and evidence of a buyer. BOA asks applicants to be aged 18 to 60 with a valid government ID.
