Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

First winter in the US: the real cost for new arrivals

Heating, clothing and utility costs for a first northern US winter, with the EIA's October 2026 heating outlook and an example budget for new arrivals.

The short answer

Most of a first winter's extra cost comes from heating, a one-off spend on clothing, and car or transport costs that rise with snow. The EIA's October 2026 outlook expects homes heated by natural gas or propane, about half of US households, to spend less than last winter, homes heated by electricity slightly more, and heating oil homes, mostly in the Northeast, about 21% more. Check whether heat is included in your rent before you sign.

Arriving from Lagos or Abuja, it is easy to underestimate a winter in Chicago, Minneapolis, Boston or even Maryland. The cold itself is manageable with the right clothing. The surprise is the bills: the heating cost that appears in December, the boots and coat bought in a hurry, and the extra spending on rides when walking to the bus stop is no longer pleasant.

Heating: the biggest unknown

First, who pays

In many apartment buildings, especially older ones in the Northeast and Midwest, heat is included in the rent. In others, you pay for heating through your gas or electricity bill. Ask the landlord before you sign, and ask what the bills were last winter. A cheaper rent with heating on you can cost more over a year.

What the EIA expects this winter

The US Energy Information Administration's Short-Term Energy Outlook, released on 6 October 2026, assumes temperatures similar to last winter and to the ten-winter average, and expects:

Main heating fuelShare of householdsExpected spending vs last winter
Natural gas or propaneAbout halfLower on average
ElectricityNot stated in the outlookSlightly higher
Heating oilAbout 3%, mostly NortheastAbout 21% higher (prices up more than 30%)

Those are national averages. Your bill depends on your home's insulation, size, the thermostat setting and your utility's tariff. Your gas or electricity company can usually tell you the previous occupant's average bills for an address.

Why the Northeast and Midwest cost more

The EIA's guide to energy use in homes, based on its 2020 household survey, says heating and air conditioning together made up 52% of a household's annual energy use, and that homes in the Northeast and Midwest use more energy on average than those in the South and West because of heating demand. Natural gas was used in 58% of homes, about 13% of households used a heat pump as their main heating, and heating oil is used mainly in the Northeast. Moving to Minneapolis is a different heating budget from moving to Houston.

Keeping the bill down

  • Ask the landlord to seal draughty windows and doors before winter; many leases make this the landlord's job.
  • Use a programmable or smart thermostat if the apartment has one, and turn it down at night and while you are out.
  • Keep radiators and vents clear of furniture and curtains.
  • Use space heaters carefully: they are expensive to run on electricity and a fire risk if left on unattended.
  • Read your meter or the bill's usage graph each month, so a jump shows up early.

Deposits and budget billing

New customers without US credit history are often asked for a deposit by gas and electricity companies; our guide to utility deposits for newcomers explains how these work. Many utilities also offer budget billing, which spreads your expected annual cost evenly across the months, so a cold January does not land as one large bill. Ask your provider whether it offers this.

Clothing: a one-off spend

Most new arrivals need a proper insulated, waterproof coat, waterproof boots with grip, gloves, a hat, a scarf and thermal layers for each person in the household. Children outgrow theirs every year. Buying in late summer or at end-of-season sales costs less than buying in the first snow. Second-hand shops and community clothing drives, often run by churches and Nigerian associations, can cut the cost for children's clothing.

Getting around in snow

  • Drivers: winter tyres or all-season tyres in good condition, an ice scraper, washer fluid rated for freezing and a basic emergency kit.
  • Transit users: delays can mean more rideshare trips. Budget for a few.
  • Walking: icy pavements cause falls; good boots are a safety purchase, not a luxury.

For the bigger question of whether to own a car, see commuting costs in Houston and New York.

An example first-winter budget

Example only, for a single adult renting a one-bedroom apartment where heat is paid by the tenant. Your figures will differ.

Example itemExample amount
Coat, boots, gloves, hat, thermals (one-off)$400
Extra heating over five months ($90 a month)$450
Extra rides on bad-weather days (10 at $20)$200
Draught-proofing and a space heater$80
Total extra for the season$1,130

Spread over five months, that example adds about $226 a month. If you plan to travel home for December, plan for both: our guide to budgeting for a December trip to Nigeria covers that side.

Where Pryme fits

Winter is also when many Nigerians abroad send extra money home for Christmas. A Savings Box lets you set naira aside in Nigeria ahead of the season, and the Personal Assistant can remind you when bills on either side are due; nothing moves without your approval.

Questions people ask

How much does heating cost in the US in winter?

It varies widely by fuel, home and region. The EIA's October 2026 outlook expects gas- and propane-heated homes to spend less than last winter, electric-heated homes slightly more and heating oil homes about 21% more.

Is heat included in rent in the US?

In many older apartment buildings in the Northeast and Midwest it is; in others you pay through your gas or electricity bill. Ask the landlord before signing.

What winter clothes do I need for my first US winter?

An insulated waterproof coat, waterproof boots with grip, gloves, a hat, a scarf and thermal layers. Buy before the first snow or at end-of-season sales.

Can I spread my heating bill over the year?

Many utilities offer budget billing, which averages your expected annual cost into equal monthly payments. Ask your provider.
