Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Budgeting for a December trip to Nigeria from the US

One budget for a December trip home from the US: flights, travel documents, gifts, family support, spending money and the FX costs that are easy to miss.

The short answer

Build a December trip budget in two currencies: dollar costs paid in the US (flights, visas or passports, insurance, gifts bought here) and naira costs in Nigeria (transport, family support, events, daily spending). Set the naira amounts first, then convert them at a realistic rate with a buffer, because the exchange rate and fees decide what the naira side costs in dollars.

December is when many Nigerians in the US go home: weddings, burials, end-of-year parties, church, and time with family. It is also when budgets break. Flights are at their highest, every visit comes with expectations, and money spent in naira is hard to track against a dollar salary. This guide sets out a single budget you can fill in.

Before you book: documents

  • Passport. The US State Department's Nigeria page (updated June 2026) says US-Nigerian dual nationals are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria. Renew early; consular appointments fill up before December.
  • Visa. Travellers using a US passport need a Nigerian visa, applied for before travel.
  • Health. The State Department lists yellow fever and polio certificates for travellers over nine months old.
  • Children. Check documents for US-born children; see US-born children travelling to Nigeria.

The dollar side

ItemNotes
FlightsDecember fares are high; booking earlier usually helps. See our guide on booking US–Lagos flights for December
Passport or visa feesFrom the mission's or NIS page, dated
Travel insuranceMedical cover abroad is often excluded from US plans
Gifts bought in the USMind airline baggage allowances and excess fees
Airport transport and parking in the USEasy to forget

For fares and timing, see when to book US–Lagos flights for December.

The naira side

List what you expect to spend in Nigeria, in naira, by category:

  • Local transport: airport pickup, car hire or driver, fuel, domestic flights.
  • Accommodation if you are not staying with family.
  • Family support: parents, siblings, extended family, gifts of cash.
  • Events: weddings, burials, aso ebi, contributions.
  • Daily spending: food, data, outings.

Then add a buffer of 10–15% for the things that always come up, such as a wedding you did not know about or a generator repair at your parents' house. Family support in December is often the largest line and the least planned; agree amounts with your spouse before you land. See Christmas and New Year spending at home.

Setting family support before you land

The hardest line to control is the one decided in the moment: an uncle's request, a cousin's school fees, a contribution at a burial. Decide a total for family support before you travel and, if it helps, a split by person. Some travellers send a fixed amount to parents a week before arrival, so that money is not handed over in cash during visits. Others keep a separate envelope or account for requests and stop when it is empty. Either way, telling family in advance what you can do avoids awkward conversations later. See managing family expectations.

After the trip

Within a week of returning, compare what you spent against the plan, line by line. Note which lines ran over and by how much; that is next December's starting point. If you overspent on a credit card, set a repayment date now, before interest builds.

The FX costs

Your naira budget turns into a dollar cost through the exchange rate and fees. Compare the total naira you receive for each dollar, after fees, rather than a headline rate. Three habits help:

  1. Convert part of your naira budget in the months before the trip rather than all of it at the airport. See keeping a naira stash for December trips.
  2. Avoid carrying large amounts of dollar cash. FinCEN Form 105 must be filed when you carry more than $10,000 in currency or monetary instruments into or out of the US at one time; see rules on cash dollars on the flight.
  3. Use transfers funded from your bank account rather than cash at a counter: since 1 January 2026 the IRS applies a 1% remittance transfer tax when the sender pays with cash, a money order or a cashier's check.

A worked budget

Example only, with an assumed rate of ₦1,450 per dollar after fees:

LineNairaDollars
Flights for two adults$3,200
Passport renewal and travel insurance$400
Gifts bought in the US$500
Transport in Nigeria₦600,000$413.79
Family support₦1,500,000$1,034.48
Events and contributions₦700,000$482.76
Daily spending₦500,000$344.83
Buffer (about 12% of naira lines)₦400,000$275.86
Total₦3,700,000$6,651.72

The naira lines total ₦3,700,000, or $2,551.72 at the assumed rate; the dollar lines total $4,100. If the rate you get is ₦1,350 instead, the same naira costs $2,740.74, about $189 more. That is why the buffer matters.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme account you can hold USD and NGN, convert to naira in stages with Swap (the app shows the rate and fee before you approve) and keep the naira ready for the trip. You can also send naira to family ahead of your arrival. See multicurrency.

Questions people ask

How much should I budget for a December trip to Nigeria?

It depends on flights, family size and expectations. Build two lists, dollar costs and naira costs, convert the naira at a realistic rate and add a 10–15% buffer.

Do I need a Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria as a dual citizen?

The US State Department says US-Nigerian dual nationals are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria.

Can I carry dollar cash to Nigeria?

Amounts over $10,000 at one time must be reported on FinCEN Form 105 when leaving the US. Carrying large cash also carries theft risk.

When should I change dollars to naira for my trip?

Spreading conversions over the months before you travel reduces the effect of one bad rate on the day.
