Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Christmas and New Year spending at home: a US earner's budget

The festive outlays a US-based Nigerian usually funds at home, a worked budget in dollars and naira, and the transfer dates that matter in December.

The short answer

Most festive spending sent home from the US falls into six lines: gifts to parents and close family, extended-family and staff bonuses, the Christmas meal, church and community giving, travel to the village, and January bills such as school fees. A modest worked example below comes to ₦1,880,000, about $1,253 at an illustrative rate. Send before 24 December: the Federal Reserve's ACH system closes from 24 December evening to 27 December in 2026.

The six lines that make up a festive budget

Requests in December arrive all at once and in no order. Sorting them into lines, with a ceiling for each, makes it possible to say yes to what matters and no to the rest without guilt.

  1. Parents and close family: a Christmas gift, often larger than the usual monthly support.
  2. Extended family and staff: aunts, uncles, cousins, and the people who help your parents through the year, such as a driver, housekeeper or gateman.
  3. The meal and the household: rice, chicken or goat, drinks, and the extra cooking gas and power that a full house uses.
  4. Church, mosque and community: thanksgiving, harvest, end-of-year levies, town union dues.
  5. Travel at home: the trip to the village or between cities, for you or for your parents.
  6. January: school fees, rent renewals and other bills that land straight after the holiday.

The last line is the one most often forgotten. Spending everything in December leaves the family short in the first weeks of January, when school resumes.

Prices this year

Nigeria's headline inflation was 14.63% year on year in September 2026 and food inflation 19.59%, according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria. A Christmas meal costed last December will be short. Ask the family to price this year's list in the first week of December, early enough to adjust before the rush.

A worked budget

Example only, at an illustrative rate of ₦1,500 to $1 (not today's rate). Kemi is a nurse in Dallas supporting her parents in Ilorin and a wider family. She is not travelling home this year.

LineNaira (example)USD at example rate
Gift to parents₦500,000$333
Two siblings at home, ₦100,000 each₦200,000$133
Extended family (six people, ₦30,000 each)₦180,000$120
Parents' driver and housekeeper bonus₦100,000$67
Christmas and New Year meal, drinks, gas₦350,000$233
Church thanksgiving and town union levy₦150,000$100
January: younger sibling's school fees top-up₦400,000$267
Total₦1,880,000$1,253

The USD column is rounded per line, so it sums to $1,253 against an exact $1,253.33. Transfer fees, the provider's FX margin and the ₦50 Nigerian stamp duty on each transfer of ₦10,000 or more are extra. If Kemi sends nine separate transfers she pays nine stamp duties; sending once to her parents and letting them distribute cuts the fees, though she then relies on them to hand it on.

Seeing it against your pay

Still as an example: if Kemi takes home $5,000 a month after tax and her usual costs, the festive budget of $1,253 is about a quarter of one month's pay. Put aside $105 a month from January and it is ready by December (12 × $105 = $1,260). Seen that way, the question is not whether she can afford Christmas but whether she wants to fund it from one month or from twelve.

If you are travelling home

Add flights, airport transfers, a car and driver, and the cash you will be asked for at every visit. Our December trip budget and the guide to Detty December costs in Lagos cover those lines.

Timing transfers around the holidays

  • The Federal Reserve's 2026 holiday schedule lists Thanksgiving on 26 November and Christmas on 25 December, and 1 January 2027. FedACH processing ends at 11:30pm ET on 24 December and resumes at 5:30pm ET on 27 December 2026, so a bank-funded transfer started on Christmas Eve may not move until the 28th.
  • Nigeria's Public Holidays Act lists Christmas Day and New Year's Day; the government also declares other holiday dates each year, so check the announcements in December.
  • Licensed money transfer operators pay out in naira only since 1 May 2026, under the CBN's March 2026 directive.
  • Send the largest amounts by mid-December, when vendors and markets are still calm and nobody is waiting on a holiday.

Setting limits

Decide the total before the first request arrives, then share it with your parents or one sibling so they can help say no. A fixed list also stops the same person being paid twice by different relatives abroad. If December requests are part of a wider pattern, see setting limits on black tax.

Where Pryme fits

Saving a little each month in a naira Savings Box means December's spending is set aside before it is due. Convert dollars when you choose with Swap; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Your Personal Assistant can prepare each festive payment from your list and hold it for your approval, so nothing goes twice.

Questions people ask

How much should I send home for Christmas from the US?

There is no right figure. Set a total first, divide it into lines (parents, family and staff, the meal, giving, travel, January bills) and keep to it. Our worked example comes to ₦1,880,000.

When is the last day to send money to Nigeria before Christmas?

For bank-funded transfers, before 24 December: in 2026, FedACH processing ends at 11:30pm ET on 24 December and resumes on 27 December. Card-funded transfers may move sooner; check your provider.

Why does Christmas money run out in January?

School fees and rent renewals land just after the holidays. Keep a January line in the budget.

Is it better to send one lump sum or many small transfers?

One transfer to a trusted person costs fewer fees and stamp duties; separate transfers give you more control over who gets what.
