Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Does FINTRAC see transfers of $10,000 or more to Nigeria?

Banks and money transfer firms must report big international transfers. What the C$10,000 rule covers, and why a report is not a penalty.

The short answer

Yes. Under FINTRAC's guidance (modified June 2024), banks, other financial entities and money services businesses must report an international electronic funds transfer of C$10,000 or more, or two or more transfers totalling that within a 24-hour window for the same person, within five business days. It is a routine report filed by the institution, not a fine, a tax or an accusation; sending that much to Nigeria is legal.

Many Nigerians in Canada split a large payment into smaller pieces because someone told them "anything over ten thousand gets flagged". The real rule is narrower and less alarming than the rumour, and splitting to avoid it can create the very problem people fear.

What the rule says

FINTRAC is Canada's financial intelligence unit. Its guidance page "Reporting electronic funds transfers to FINTRAC" (issued February 2024, modified 24 June 2024) sets out the following.

Who reports
Financial entities (such as banks and credit unions), money services businesses (MSBs), foreign MSBs and casinos.
What is reported
An international electronic funds transfer of C$10,000 or more in a single transaction, initiated or finally received at a client's request. Amounts in foreign currency are converted at the Bank of Canada rate.
The 24-hour rule
Two or more international transfers that together reach C$10,000 within a static 24-hour window, where the institution knows they share the same requester, third party or beneficiary.
Deadline
Within five business days after the day the transfer is initiated or received.
What goes in
Details of the transfer and the parties, including the requester and beneficiary, and a source-of-funds field.

The person sending the money does not file anything. The institution does. FINTRAC's page does not say that the client is told a report was made, so you will normally not hear about it at all.

A report is not a penalty

An electronic funds transfer report is a threshold report: it is filed because of the amount, not because of anything wrong. FINTRAC lists it alongside large cash transaction reports, which work the same way for cash of C$10,000 or more. Sending C$15,000 to a builder in Abuja or to your parents for a medical bill is lawful. The report records it.

FINTRAC separately describes suspicious transaction reports, and says an institution may have to file both an EFT report and a suspicious transaction report for the same transaction. That second kind depends on the institution's judgment about the circumstances, not on a figure.

Why splitting a payment is a bad idea

Because of the 24-hour rule, sending C$6,000 in the morning and C$6,000 in the afternoon to the same person is still reportable once the institution links them. Spreading payments across days to stay under C$10,000 can look like deliberate structuring, which is exactly the kind of pattern compliance teams are trained to notice. It is also slower and often costs more in fees.

Worked example

Scenario (example)Reportable?
One transfer of C$12,000 to a land agent in LagosYes, single transfer of C$10,000 or more
C$7,000 and C$4,000 to your brother within the same 24-hour window, same appYes, totals C$11,000 for the same beneficiary
C$7,000 on Monday and C$4,000 the following weekNot under the 24-hour rule, but the pattern is visible to the provider
C$3,000 monthly support to your motherNo threshold report; a provider may still ask routine questions

What you may be asked instead

The report itself is invisible to you. What you may notice is the provider's own checks before it sends a large amount: a request for the purpose of the payment, proof of where the money came from, or ID. Those requests come from the provider's compliance programme, which FINTRAC requires every registered MSB to run. Our guide to source-of-funds requests lists the documents that usually work.

On the Nigerian side, separate rules apply to large transfers and cash. For the big picture on moving a lump sum, read how to send a large amount to Nigeria, and for travelling with cash, carrying C$10,000 or more cash.

Incoming money is covered too

The rule works in both directions. If family in Nigeria send you C$10,000 or more, for example after selling a property, the Canadian bank or MSB that finally receives the transfer reports it. Expect your bank to ask what the money is, and keep the sale documents handy.

Tax is a separate question

An EFT report is not a tax event. Whether money you send or receive has tax consequences in Canada depends on what it is (a gift, a loan, a property purchase, business income). This page is information, not tax advice; if you are unsure, check with the CRA or an accountant.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company, not a bank. Outside Nigeria, its activities are carried out through regulated partners, and Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. Large transfers through Pryme Send go through the same kind of checks as at any regulated provider, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. A verifiable statement or receipt from Pryme receipts, made with VerifyDoc.ai, can help when someone asks you to prove a payment.

Questions people ask

Is it illegal to send more than $10,000 from Canada to Nigeria?

No. There is no legal limit in that sense. Transfers of C$10,000 or more are reported to FINTRAC by the institution, which is routine.

Will FINTRAC contact me if I send $10,000 to Nigeria?

FINTRAC's guidance describes reports filed by institutions; it does not say clients are contacted or told. The provider may ask you questions before sending.

Does splitting a transfer avoid FINTRAC reporting?

Not within 24 hours: two or more transfers totalling C$10,000 for the same requester or beneficiary in a 24-hour window are reportable. Splitting to avoid reporting can look like structuring.

Does FINTRAC reporting mean I owe tax?

No. A report is not a tax assessment. Tax depends on what the money is, and is a separate matter with the CRA.
