Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Exporting UK food products to Nigeria: NAFDAC listing

Packaged UK food needs NAFDAC registration before it can enter Nigeria, and several food types are restricted outright. What to check first.

The short answer

Packaged food made in the UK cannot be imported into Nigeria unless it is registered with NAFDAC, which requires a CAC-registered Nigerian applicant, a notarised power of attorney from the manufacturer, a Certificate of Manufacture and Free Sale authenticated by the Nigerian High Commission, lab analysis and a factory inspection. Before starting, check Nigeria's import restrictions: the ITA's Nigeria guide lists frozen poultry, pork, beef, retail-pack fruit juice, bottled water, soft drinks, beer, spaghetti, noodles and refined vegetable oil among restricted food imports.

Biscuits, sauces, baby food, cereals and drinks made in Britain have a ready market in Nigerian supermarkets. Getting them onto a shelf legally takes a NAFDAC number, and some categories cannot be imported at all. The first piece of work is to check which side of that line your product sits on.

Step one: is the product allowed in?

The ITA's Nigeria guide (published June 2023, changed April 2025) summarises Nigeria's import prohibition list. Food items it lists as restricted include:

  • live or dead birds, including frozen poultry; pork; beef
  • birds' eggs, other than hatching eggs
  • most refined vegetable oils and fats (crude vegetable oil is not banned)
  • retail-pack sugar with added flavouring or colouring; cocoa butter
  • spaghetti and noodles; retail-pack fruit juice; retail-pack tomato paste
  • bottled or canned water, soft drinks, beer and stout (energy and health drinks excepted)

NAFDAC says it will not accept new registration applications for imported products on the Federal Government Import Prohibition List. Lists change, so ask a Nigerian clearing agent to confirm against the current Nigeria Customs list before you invest. See also the frozen poultry ban.

Step two: the NAFDAC dossier

NAFDAC's Guidelines for Registration of Imported Food Products (FR&R-GDL-001-00, effective 1 March 2021) set out what is needed. The importing company must be incorporated with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

ItemWho provides itKey condition
Application letter and online formNigerian applicantOne form per product
Power of attorneyUK manufacturerSigned by a senior officer, notarised in the UK, valid at least five years
Certificate of Manufacture and Free SaleUK regulator or health bodyAuthenticated by the Nigerian High Commission
Trademark registrationBrand ownerRegistered in Nigeria in the owner's name
Certificate of analysisTesting labLetterhead, batch, dates, analyst's signature
GMP inspection invitationUK manufacturerFactory address, overseas contact, Nigerian local agent

Where the Nigerian applicant owns the brand and you only make the product, a notarised contract manufacturing agreement replaces the power of attorney.

Step three: vetting, samples and approval

  1. Documents are submitted and screened.
  2. NAFDAC issues an import permit for samples and vets the labels.
  3. Samples go in after label vetting, with proof of payment and the certificate of analysis.
  4. The approval meeting considers documents, GMP and lab results.
  5. NAFDAC notifies registration or issues a compliance directive.

The guideline aims for 120 working days from acceptance, with the clock stopping while queries are outstanding; an unanswered query closes the file after 90 working days. Registration lasts five years. Labels must meet NAFDAC's food labelling regulations, which are a separate document; a UK label designed for Tesco is a starting point, not a finished Nigerian label.

Costs to plan for

NAFDAC publishes its fees on its tariff page; we could not confirm a current figure, so ask your agent for the demand notice. Plan also for notarising the power of attorney, authenticating the free sale certificate at the High Commission, the factory inspection, lab analysis and agent fees. Food sits outside SONCAP certification, so the SON route applies only to non-food items in the same shipment. Duty under the ECOWAS tariff applies at clearance (how the ECOWAS tariff works).

Choosing the Nigerian applicant

The registration is filed by a Nigerian company, and that company's name sits on the certificate. For a UK food producer this is the most important commercial decision in the process, because the registration is what lets the product into the country for five years. There are three common routes:

  • Your distributor files. Fastest to start, but the distributor holds the registration. If you part ways, you may need its cooperation to move the product to a new partner.
  • A regulatory agent files on your behalf. The agent holds the file under your power of attorney and you appoint distributors separately. You pay agent fees, but you keep more control.
  • Your own Nigerian company files. Most control, but you carry the cost of running a Nigerian company, including CAC registration and tax filings.

Whichever route you pick, the power of attorney names the products and the authority to register them, so draft it with care. NAFDAC requires it to be valid for at least five years, which matches the life of the registration. Write into your distribution agreement what happens to the registration if the agreement ends (appointing a Nigerian distributor).

What to check first

  • Is the food category restricted?
  • Who will hold the registration in Nigeria?
  • Can your factory host a NAFDAC inspection?
  • Will your shelf life survive sea freight and clearance?

The Nigeria library's imported product documents checklist covers the applicant's side in more detail.

Where Pryme fits

Distributors in Nigeria often pay from a domiciliary account. A UK producer with a Pryme Business Account can receive USD or GBP on local details, keep it in that currency, and issue matching invoices.

Questions people ask

Do I need NAFDAC registration to sell UK food in Nigeria?

Yes. NAFDAC's guideline says unregistered food may not be imported, and a Nigerian company files the application.

Which UK foods are banned from Nigeria?

The ITA summary of Nigeria's list includes frozen poultry, pork, beef, retail-pack fruit juice, bottled water, soft drinks, beer, spaghetti, noodles and most refined vegetable oils. Confirm the current list before shipping.

How long is NAFDAC food registration valid?

Five years, according to the 2021 guideline.

Does food need SONCAP?

No. SON lists food products among goods exempt from SONCAP certification.
