Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Exporting UK whisky or wine to Nigeria

NAFDAC product registration, the import prohibition list, duty and excise, and the Form M your Nigerian importer needs before UK drinks can ship.

The short answer

UK whisky, gin or wine sold into Nigeria normally needs NAFDAC registration of each product before import, usually through a Nigerian importer or distributor, and the importer needs a Form M for every shipment. Beer and stout appear on Nigeria's import prohibition list, so check the current list for your exact product, and budget for import duty, excise and VAT, which Nigeria sets in its tariff and fiscal policy measures.

Scotch whisky, English gin and wine have a real market among Nigeria's hospitality trade and consumers. The route in is regulated at every step: product registration, import documents, duty and, at the point of sale, state liquor licensing. This guide sets out each step for a UK producer or exporter, with the sources behind it and the points you must confirm with a Nigerian importer.

Step one: is your product allowed in?

Nigeria keeps an import prohibition list (goods that may not be imported) and an absolute prohibition list. The Nigeria Customs Service list page could not be opened when we checked in October 2026; the US International Trade Administration's summary (published June 2023, changed April 2025) lists beer and stout among prohibited imports, and lists spirits above a stated alcohol strength, with exceptions, on the absolute prohibition list. Wine and standard-strength whisky are not named on that summary. Ask your importer to confirm the current list for your product's exact description and strength before you quote.

Step two: NAFDAC registration

NAFDAC regulates food and drink, including alcoholic beverages. In practice:

  • Each product (brand, size and variant) is registered before import. A Nigerian company, often your importer or distributor, normally acts as applicant, so agree in writing who holds the registration and what happens to it if you change partner. See appointing an agent or distributor.
  • Registrations are renewed. Prime Business Africa reported in January 2024 that NAFDAC cut renewal fees, with the foreign product renewal fee reduced to $450; check the current NAFDAC tariff before budgeting.

For the Nigeria-side document list, see registering an imported product with NAFDAC.

Step three: Form M and the import paperwork

Sterling Bank's guidance says a Form M is mandatory for importing physical goods into Nigeria irrespective of value, processed on the Single Window for Trade portal, and that other permits depend on the goods, NAFDAC among them. Your importer should open the Form M before you ship; without it, goods can sit at the port.

On SONCAP, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria's fee schedule (August 2022) lists food among the items exempt from SONCAP. Drinks regulated by NAFDAC are usually handled under NAFDAC rather than SONCAP, but confirm with your importer for your product.

Step four: duty, excise and VAT

The US ITA's Nigeria trade barriers page (September 2025) describes the ECOWAS Common External Tariff's five bands, from 0% to 35% for sensitive goods, with levies, excise and VAT that may be added, and says the total effective rate per tariff line is not meant to exceed 70%. Excise rates on alcoholic drinks are set in Nigeria's fiscal policy measures and have been revised over time, so treat any figure you see in older articles as historical and ask your Nigerian clearing agent for a current landed-cost calculation.

Step five: selling in Nigeria

Retail and hospitality sales of alcohol in Nigeria need local licences, which your distributor and its customers handle. Ask your distributor which outlets it can lawfully supply and what licences they hold, because that decides who can actually sell your product.

A landed-cost example

Example only. A distiller sells a pallet of whisky to a Lagos importer for £20,000, with freight and insurance to Lagos of £2,000, so £22,000 at the port. If the product sat in the 20% tariff band (the US ITA describes 20% as the CET band for finished consumer goods), import duty alone would be £4,400 (20% of £22,000), before excise, levies, VAT, clearing charges and the importer's margin. The shelf price in Lagos will therefore be far above your ex-works price, which is why importers negotiate hard on your price. Ask the clearing agent for the real band and rates for your HS code.

Questions to ask a Nigerian importer

  1. Does your company already hold NAFDAC registrations for imported drinks, and how long did they take?
  2. Who will be the applicant for our products, and will you transfer the registration if we part ways?
  3. Which HS code and duty band do you expect, and can your clearing agent give a landed-cost estimate in writing?
  4. How will you pay: from your own domiciliary account, or with foreign exchange bought through your bank under the Form M?
  5. Which outlets do you supply, and do they hold the licences needed to sell alcohol?

The UK side

  • A customs export declaration is needed to export goods from the UK, and you need an EORI number even if a forwarder makes the declaration (business.gov.uk).
  • If the goods are held under duty suspension in an excise warehouse, ask the warehouse and HMRC how to export them without UK duty being charged.
  • Keep the export declaration as proof of export for VAT zero-rating. See zero-rating VAT on exports.

Where Pryme fits

Nigerian importers may pay in dollars, sterling or naira. A Pryme Business Account receives each on its own account details and keeps it in that currency until you convert with Swap, which shows the rate and fee first. For how importers fund payments, see Form M and FX delays.

Questions people ask

Can I export Scotch whisky to Nigeria?

Yes, standard-strength whisky is not named on the import prohibition list in the US ITA summary, but each product normally needs NAFDAC registration and the importer needs a Form M. Confirm the current list with your importer.

Is beer banned from import into Nigeria?

Beer and stout are listed among prohibited imports in the US International Trade Administration's summary of Nigeria's import prohibition list (changed April 2025).

Who registers my wine with NAFDAC?

Usually a Nigerian company, such as your importer or distributor, acts as applicant. Agree in writing who holds the registration and how it transfers if you change partner.

How much duty does Nigeria charge on imported wine?

Duty, excise and VAT are set in Nigeria's tariff and fiscal policy measures and are revised from time to time. Ask a Nigerian clearing agent for a current landed-cost calculation for your product.
