Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

e-Transfer income from side gigs: what the CRA expects

Cooking, braiding, tutoring or driving on the side and paid by e-Transfer? When it becomes business income, the records to keep and what an audit asks for.

The short answer

Side income paid by Interac e-Transfer is taxed the same as any other income: if you do the work to make a profit, it is business income to report on Form T2125, whatever the payment method. The CRA defines a business as an activity carried on for profit with evidence of that intention, and it says you must report all your income. Keep the date, amount and source of every payment, and receipts for costs, for six years; once revenue passes $30,000 in a quarter or over four consecutive quarters you must register for GST/HST.

When a side gig becomes business income

Many Nigerians in Canada earn on the side: jollof and small chops for parties, braiding at home, weekend tutoring, catering trays, photo shoots, phone repairs. The CRA's test is short: a business is "an activity that you intend to carry on for profit and there is evidence to support that intention" (T4002, modified 16 Apr 2026). Taking orders, setting prices, buying supplies and advertising in WhatsApp groups is evidence. Helping a friend for free is not.

The method of payment changes nothing. An e-Transfer for a tray of puff-puff is income in the same way a cheque would be. Money that is not income, such as a gift from a sibling or repayment of a loan you made, is a different matter; see is money received from Nigeria taxable?

Why e-Transfers make records easy and risky

Every e-Transfer leaves a line on your bank statement with a name and an amount. That helps you, because it is a ready-made income record. It also means that if the CRA reviews or audits you, deposits that do not match your return are easy to see. Mixing gig money, family transfers, rent splits and refunds in one personal account makes it hard to show which deposits were income and which were not.

Simple habits that protect you

  • Use one account, or one sub-account, for the side business only.
  • Ask customers to put the order or booking in the e-Transfer message.
  • Keep a running sheet: date, customer, what was sold, amount, how paid.
  • Note family transfers and gifts on the same day you receive them, with who sent them and why.
  • Keep receipts for ingredients, hair, packaging, fuel and equipment. The CRA wants receipts to show the date, seller's name and address and a description.

What the CRA expects on your return

RequirementRule (CRA T4002 and records page)
Report all income"You must report all your income in your income tax return"
FormForm T2125, Statement of Business or Professional Activities
Year-endSelf-employed people generally use 31 December
RecordsDate, amount and source of income, with original documents; at least six years; kept in Canada
GST/HSTRegister once worldwide taxable revenue passes $30,000 in a quarter or over four consecutive quarters
DeadlinesReturn by 15 June; balance owing by 30 April (2026 tax year: 2027 dates)

You also pay both halves of CPP on self-employment profit; the CRA lists a maximum self-employed contribution of $8,460.90 for 2026. See paying both halves of CPP.

Employee, gig worker or business?

Not every side job is self-employment. If a restaurant pays you by e-Transfer to work set shifts under its supervision, using its kitchen, you may be its employee, and it should be deducting tax, CPP and EI. The CRA's guide RC4110 looks first at what the parties intended and then at control, tools and equipment, whether you can hire helpers, financial risk, investment and the chance of profit. If you think you have been treated as self-employed when you are an employee, you can ask the CRA for a ruling.

The answer matters for more than tax. An employee builds insurable hours for EI regular benefits; a self-employed person does not, though self-employed people can opt in to EI special benefits; see opting in to EI special benefits.

Worked example of the penalty (example figures)

Ngozi left out $4,000 of catering income in 2024 and again in 2026. Because she failed to report $500 or more twice within the period, the repeated-failure penalty applies: the lesser of 10% of the unreported amount ($400) or 50% of the understated tax. If her understated tax on the $4,000 is $1,000, 50% is $500, so the penalty is $400, on top of the tax and interest. Reporting the income would have cost only the tax.

If you have not been reporting

The CRA runs a Voluntary Disclosures Program for people who want to correct past returns. Its T4002 guide points to the CRA's programme overview for the conditions; read that page, or speak to an accountant, before you file anything.

Where Pryme fits

Separating side income from family money is the single most useful habit. A Personal Assistant can tag incoming payments and remind you of dates, with nothing moving unless you approve it. If you also send money to family in Nigeria, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve, which leaves a clear record of what went out and why.

Questions people ask

Does the CRA see my e-Transfers?

The CRA can ask for bank records in a review or audit, and e-Transfers show names and amounts. Report side income and keep records that explain each deposit.

Is e-Transfer income from a side hustle taxable in Canada?

Yes, if it is income from an activity carried on for profit. The payment method does not change the tax treatment.

Do I need to register for GST/HST for a side business?

Once worldwide taxable revenue passes $30,000 in a calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters. You may register voluntarily earlier.

How long must I keep records of side income?

At least six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, kept in Canada unless the CRA agrees otherwise.
