Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Opting in to EI special benefits as a self-employed person

Self-employed in Canada? How to opt in to EI maternity, sickness and caregiver benefits, the 2026 premium rate and the rules on leaving the scheme.

The short answer

Self-employed people in Canada can opt in to EI special benefits (maternity, parental, sickness, caregiver and compassionate care) by signing an agreement with the Canada Employment Insurance Commission through My Service Canada Account. You must wait 12 months before claiming and pay premiums on your net self-employment earnings through your tax return: $1.63 per $100 in 2026, up to $1,123.07 ($1.30 and $895.70 in Quebec). Benefits are up to 55% of earnings, to a maximum of $729 a week in 2026.

Why self-employed people are outside EI by default

Employees in Canada pay EI premiums through payroll. If you freelance, run your own business or control more than 40% of a corporation's voting shares, Service Canada treats you as self-employed and you have no EI cover unless you opt in. The opt-in covers special benefits only: it does not give you regular benefits if your Nigerian client ends the contract or work dries up.

The six special benefits open to self-employed people are maternity, parental, sickness (up to 26 weeks if you cannot work for medical reasons), family caregiver for children, family caregiver for adults and compassionate care. Quebec residents get maternity, paternity, parental and adoption benefits through the Québec Parental Insurance Plan instead (Canada.ca, modified 7 Aug 2026).

How to opt in and when you can claim

  1. Sign in to My Service Canada Account and complete the agreement with the Canada Employment Insurance Commission. You receive a confirmation letter.
  2. Wait: the agreement must be active for at least 12 months before you can receive special benefits.
  3. Earn enough: to claim in 2026 you needed net self-employed earnings of at least $9,254 for 1 January to 31 December 2025 (Canada.ca eligibility page, modified 31 Dec 2025).
  4. When you claim, your time on the business must drop by more than 40% for at least one week.
  5. Pay premiums each year with your return on Schedule 13 for as long as the agreement runs.

The 12-month wait is the point people miss. If you are planning a baby or expect surgery, you need to have joined at least a year before the claim.

What it costs in 2026

Where you livePremium per $100 of earningsMaximum premium
Outside Quebec$1.63$1,123.07
Quebec$1.30$895.70

Worked example (example figures)

Adaeze lives in Ontario and earns $40,000 net in 2026 from design work for clients in Lagos and Toronto. Her EI premium for 2026 is $40,000 ÷ 100 × $1.63 = $652, paid with her return. If she later claims sickness benefits, she could receive up to 55% of her earnings, capped at $729 a week in 2026. Income from Nigerian clients counts towards her self-employment earnings in the same way as Canadian clients, because it is all part of the business income on her Canadian return.

Leaving the programme

  • Within 60 days of joining: you can cancel and owe no premiums. If you rejoin later, the 12-month wait restarts from the new agreement date.
  • After 60 days, if you have never claimed: you can withdraw through My Service Canada Account, and you owe premiums until 31 December of the year you withdraw.
  • After you have received benefits: you cannot withdraw. You keep paying premiums for as long as you are self-employed (Canada.ca withdrawal page, modified 20 Dec 2024).

That last rule is the real cost to weigh. One maternity claim commits you to premiums for every year you stay self-employed, which can be decades.

Is opting in worth it for you?

There is no single answer, because the trade is a known yearly premium against a benefit you may or may not use. Questions that help you decide:

  • Timing. Are you likely to need maternity, parental or sickness benefits more than 12 months from now? If the need is sooner, joining today will not help with it.
  • Earnings. Will your net self-employment earnings stay above the minimum for the year before a claim? A slow year with few Nigerian contracts could leave you short.
  • Other cover. Does a partner's employer plan, private disability insurance or savings already cover the gap?
  • Length of self-employment. If you expect to stay self-employed for many years, remember that a single claim locks in premiums for all of them.
  • Quebec. If you live in Quebec, parental cover comes through QPIP, so the federal opt-in matters mainly for sickness and caregiving.

Family in Nigeria and caregiver benefits

Service Canada's caregiving pages say that if the person you care for is outside Canada you may be eligible, with a medical certificate from a doctor or nurse practitioner in the country where they are receiving care. Compassionate care is available for up to 26 weeks where a family member has a serious condition with a significant risk of death within 26 weeks; the family caregiver benefit is up to 15 weeks for adults and 35 weeks for children. For many in the diaspora, a parent falling ill in Lagos or Enugu is the likeliest reason to claim.

Where Pryme fits

If you send money home while on reduced income, a Pryme account lets you keep naira, US dollars, pounds and euros in separate balances and send to family in Nigeria with the rate and fee shown before you approve. A Personal Assistant can set reminders for your premium and tax dates. See paying both halves of CPP when self-employed for the other contribution you owe.

Questions people ask

Can self-employed people get EI maternity benefits in Canada?

Yes, if you opt in through My Service Canada Account, wait 12 months and meet the minimum earnings. Quebec residents use QPIP for maternity and parental benefits.

How much is the EI premium for self-employed people in 2026?

$1.63 per $100 of earnings, to a maximum of $1,123.07, or $1.30 per $100 to a maximum of $895.70 in Quebec.

Can I stop paying EI premiums after a claim?

No. Once you have received benefits you cannot withdraw and must keep paying premiums for as long as you are self-employed.

Can I claim EI to care for a parent in Nigeria?

Service Canada says you may be eligible when the person is outside Canada, with a medical certificate from a doctor or nurse practitioner where they receive care.
